In the recently concluded Yi National Summit the theme was “ The Change we want to be “. The summit emphasised on how youth can bring in the change they always wanted to see.

Yi Kochi is one of the 26 chapters of Yi. We have a unique role as compared to the other chapters – mainly because we are in Gods own country. Why???

The problems kerala faces vis – a vis the rest of the country is vastly different. Kerala is a bizarre anomaly among the so called emerging nations ( including India) – it’s a place that offers real hope for the future of developing nations – Why?

In size its way too small just over a percentage of India but has close to 3.4% of the population . Kerala has a population as big as California’s and a per capita annual income of less than $300. But its infant mortality rate is very low, its literacy rate among the highest on Earth, and its birthrate below America’s and falling faster. Kerala’s residents live nearly as long as Americans or Europeans. Though mostly a land of paddy-covered plains, statistically Kerala stands out as the beacon of social development; there’s truly no place like it.

So when we take the above factors into consideration Yi s role in nation building takes a different path here. The sad part of kerala model of development is – it has left huge gaps – industry doesn’t exist here, hence the exposure to youth is limited. We are a small state but the highest road density in India – its FOUR times the national average thus leading to the highest number of accidents. We have an ageing population – so what should Yi concentrate on in the coming years is a challenge.

In the past years we have concentrated on giving exposure to the youth and instilling in them an entrepreneurial culture. And last year was no different. A series of events were done to ensure that the students get a wider exposure.

This has been possible because of the excellent team work – Biju – the Co chair has been instrumental in the Yi net activities ably supported by a team .The Executive Committee as always there to throw up new ideas and streamline the existing.

The support from National , the secretariat mainly Jayesh and Anuradha has been fantastic. CII as a parent was always there – a special thanks to ganesh , CII Chair.

I wish Biju and his team all the best for the coming year and take YI kochi to greater heights.

We Can We Will. Naveen Philip

Dear Young Indians,

Any organization that fails to include the society as one of its stakeholders is failing in its responsibility to the nation. Merely adding on to the GDP, without parallel contribution to the society will result in a lopsided and unbalanced economy. And as the chairman of CII Kerala, I can without doubt say that CII has not ignored its responsibilities to the society. And one of the major steps we took to ensure that we give back to the country and society is the conceptualization and formation of Young Indians (Yi) eight years ago and running it successfully all these years.

Demographically India stands at an advantage in comparison to most other countries like the US, Japan or China. We have a population in which the great majority is in their productive years. There are very few who don’t understand the potentials we have as a nation, but they are very few who actually work towards realizing this potential.

At this juncture, I call forth all Young Indians, who by definition and action are a group of progressive youth, to explore the various opportunities and options in front of them. And the primary step, I feel, is the development of an understanding of our current status beyond just demographics. I would suggest, we actually go out into the society and involve them in our work, as we can’t afford to ignore them in our task of nation building. We also need to focus more on developing Entrepreneurship in the state as a tool to kindle young minds.

I wholeheartedly congratulate the Yi Kochi chapter under the leadership of Mr Naveen Philip for the wonderful work they have done last year. Their remarkable initiatives under the students’ net platform and Operation Blackboard do deserver special mention and these are clear testimonials to the fact that Yi Kochi is moving the right direction of inclusive development.

I wish the incoming team under Mr Biju Philipose, all the very best and request them to explore newer and innovative agendas, keeping in mind the unique advantages and shortcomings we have as a state and as a nation

Best regards

Wealth Out of Waste (WOW)

Yi Environment Day Celebrations

On 5th June, 2010, Yi Kochi chapter started off its activities for the year, with the screening the documentary movie “Only an Axe Away” as a part of its World Environment Day celebrations. The film, directed by P Baburaj and C Saratchandran, was about the history of the unique campaign to save the Silent Valley from destructive development. The film shared the anxieties of the people of Kerala about the future of the Silent Valley.

Wealth Out of Waste (WOW)

Global warming, draught and environmental pollution are some of the serious threat affecting the society today. In the times of recession, GDP & foreign exchange deficit pays a vital role in the economic existence of the country. In the arena of energy, people are looking for alternate cheap resources for low cost energy.

To address these key issues, Yi along with its nets took up the WOW- Wealth out of Waste project in tie up with Sree Giri Packaging, a sister concern of Sree Sakthi Paper Mills. The project focuses on recycling waste materials like waste paper and plastics. SGP Company collects papers & plastic from schools and the school is also paid for it (premium price to normal scrap collector payment rates). SGP then recycles them at their factory, thus generating savings on Environment. At present, the project has been taken up by Yi TocH School net. Yi Kochi hopes to take up thisproject in all its nets in the coming year.
