ASK THE UMP! Michael E. Kelley

USTA Certified Official

National Hard Courts Tournament Referee

Taking one for the team

In our doubles match I was standing close to the cen-

ter line just behind the service line, our opponent’s

first serve to my partner landed out then bounced and

hit me. Our opponents thought it was their point be-

cause the ball struck me. I stated the serve was a

fault so the point was “dead” before the ball hit me.

Was this correct?

Dear Taking One,

Sometimes we can get confused when the answer seems obvious. Yes Rule 24i states

the point is lost if the ball in play touches the player or anything the player is wearing

or carrying, except the racquet. However in your case the ball was not” in play” as it

was a fault before it hit you. Rule11 states that: “Unless a fault or a let is called, the

ball is in play from the moment the server hits the ball and remains in play until the

point is decided.

Second Serve.

REMINDERS FROM OUR

MONITORS:

RPTC is a great place to work and a fun place

to play tennis, when it’s actually possible to

find parking! And it’s important to remember

that when you come to RPTC, you agree to fol-

low the club’s rules. We bring these items up

because of recent events.

1: When an RPTC member brings a guest to the club, that member assumes re-

sponsibility for the guest. This is true whether it’s for a casual match, part of a flex

league match like Agape or San Diego Tennis League, or if the guest is a spectator.

This responsibility includes both your guest’s behavior and paying any required

fees for the guest. If they can’t pay the guest fee, you must pay for them or they

won’t be able to play.

2: Parents, please remember that you are responsible for your children when they

are at the club. RPTC’s monitors are not trained in child care. It’s not possible for

them to carry out their duties and also watch unattended children. If your child

has a lesson with one of our coaches, please make sure the coach is there before

you leave. It’s especially important to watch your children as the warm weather

makes Canyonside Park’s rattlesnakes more active.

3: Please remember that Men’s Open Play is intended for players age 16 and up.

There are no exceptions to this rule and no special treatment will be given, regard-

less of your child’s level of skill or other extenuating circumstances.

JUNIOR MEMBERS PRACTICING:

Reminder to Junior players practicing for their upcoming leagues and tour-

naments this summer: You will need to pay a guest fee when a non-

member parent feeds balls with a racquet. The club has determined this is

a tennis act worthy of collecting a guest fee. Tossing balls by hand is not.

ing play time:

First three weeks of June: 72 LAST MINUTE cancellations.

the reservation. The office is now tracking repeat offenders.
