Keeping Hawk Families Engaged
Message from the Principal Open for Business!
This edition of Hawk Chat is published on the eve of our 2019 Open Afternoon.
I look forward to seeing many new faces during the afternoon, and also many ‘familiar’ faces, those of parents/carers who already have stu-dents attending our fabulous school.
The afternoon is primarily for current Year 6 students and their families, but there may also be additional ‘potential Hawks’ seeking enrolment for 2020 in year levels other than Year 7. All are welcome.
Our Year 7 enrolments have continued to increase every year, from 273 in 2015 to 369 for this year. It is thrilling to see this increasing interest in students attending our school.
I look forward to seeing you this week, or on other occasions very soon and, dare I say it, “Go Queensland!”

Harristown High is proud to announce on behalf of Retaj, in the history of the Queensland Training Awards, she is the first student to ever be nominated for all three categories and more importantly, she is the first student to take out “Top 5 Semi Finalist” for each Category. A remarkable achievement, well done Retaj.
Queensland Training Awards Finalists will be announced on June 3rd , therefore we take this opportunity to again congratulate Retaj on her advancement so far and wish her all the very best for progressing into the finalist stages.

12 years Cross Country
On Friday 3rd May Angus Canning, Brayden McKee & Aliviah Gill represented HSHS at the 12 years cross country trials held at Kearneys Spring. All three students ran strongly, with Angus Canning coming in 3rd to be selected to attend the 12 years Darling Downs trials.
SPL
Harristown SHS travelled to play
Aspley in a trial and versed
Chancellor at home.
Aspley teams proved to be too
strong and HSHS didn’t get the
results they had worked so hard
for. After a long bus trip Junior
Girls recorded a 5-1 loss against
the home team who managed some incredible goals through a sin-
gle scorer. Senior Girls went down 2-0 after a couple of early goals
but fought hard to challenge Aspley in the second half. Junior and
Senior Boys were up against a sharp side but showed great deter-
mination.
Chancellor is a top side in the SPL and Harristown teams were able
to record some very close scores. The Senior Boys went down 2-1
after a late goal from the travelling team. The Junior Girls also con-
ceded late goals to finish with a 2-0 loss. Senior Girls and Junior
Boys fought hard until the final whistle.
Football Academy Update Bill Turner
The Boys and Girls Football Academies recently participated in the Bill Turner Cup. Harristown teams were undefeated on the
cluster day with the boys moving through to the semi-finals where they faced St Josephs and were knocked out of the competition.

THE ARTS TALENTED HARRISTOWN ARTISTS
SHINE AT JUNIOR ART EXPO
The Toowoomba Art Society/ The Chronicle Junior Art Expo is a popular visual art competition open to primary and secondary students from public and private schools in the region. The selectors of the competition had the daunting task of choosing less than 100 artworks from over 680 entries. The Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery provided the prestigious venue for the opening and the announcement of awards. An impressive eight Harristown Visual Art students were selected, receiving a certificate of commendation for their work that is now exhibited in the gallery.
We congratulate: Mai Lan Ruhle ( Yr 7),

It’s that time of year when assignments and exams loom.
The following may help?
Effective Research and Assignment Writing.
1. Plan ; Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance.
Map a time line for information gathering,
organization of information and writing.
2. The library has an extensive range of authoritative
texts.
3. Check the marking criteria. Does what you have
written meet the criteria. Unsure check with your
teacher.
4. Write in a simple, frank manner, avoiding clichés.
Avoid jargon. Write so that your younger sibling and
your parents can read it and make sense of your work.
5. Traditionally one idea per paragraph. State the main
idea in the first sentence and expand on it in the rest
of the paragraph.
6. If dealing with figures; graphs and tables display
information in a way that makes it easy for the reader
to digest and understand.
7. Always proofread a printed copy of your writing. Ask a
classmate to read it, get mum or dad to look it over.
Check spelling and grammar.

Indigenous Education News The past couple of weeks have seen our Indigenous students engaged in a number of exciting activities. Ten students from
Years 10 to 12 are currently participating in the Harness Energy Training Course held over five weeks each Wednesday. The
course is very much hands on and gives students the opportunity to complete a number of industry relevant competencies, as
well as gain insight into the many and varied apprenticeships available to them after finishing Year 12. There are three days
left of the course and students are reminded to be at school by 7.45am sharp each Wednesday to catch the bus. Alternatively,
parents can drop their students at the training venue by 8am—(the address is on the Training Program previously sent home).
Our Indigenous Student Leadership team has been very busy throughout
Reconciliation Week. Jakiah Boyle and Shanice Duncan, represented
HSHS with PRIDE as they participated in the USQ Deadly Ways Camp
which saw them involved in creating and performing a musical piece that
stirred the hearts of those present in the audience on Friday morning.
Thank you to Dre Robinson and Mackenzie Docherty who presented the
school’s Reconciliation Week address on assembly, outlining a brief
history of this event and why the issue of reconciliation is significant in all
of our lives.
Congratulations also goes to those students who have displayed significant improvement/achievement at school and so are
the lucky recipients of tickets to Djuki Mala, performing at the Empire Theatre on Sunday – it should be a great show!
QATSIF News: Round 11 QATSIF applications will be sent out early next term. In order to qualify for this fantastic oppor-
tunity, parents/carers of Yr 10 and 11 students are urged to encourage their child to work hard. An invitation to apply will be
sent to those students who achieve a C standard or better in all their subjects, along with good results for effort and behav-
iour on their Semester One report. If you would like more information about QATSIF, come along to the open afternoon on
Tuesday, 4th June from 3.45pm or contact Bonny Jones at the school.
Tutorial sessions for Year 11 General maths will be conducted in K003 each Thursday from 3.15pm-4.30pm. Students from any Year 11 General Mathematics class are welcome to attend. There will be a sign-in book to register attendance.
