December is here! November was a short month with many activities and it is followed by another short month with many activities. Our American Education Week was a weeklong celebration and we were so proud to display student learning and teacher dedication. We had 576 visitors! We started each day with a scheduled grade level breakfast. We ended the week with a musical performance by our third grade students in “Bebop with Aesop, Fables Told through Music”. One of our staff, Marcy Hemminger has returned from Nigeria. Mrs. Hemminger was on the African continent for a few days. Mrs. Hemminger worked closely with Nigerian schools and provided training to its educators. We can honestly say that she is known worldwide for her educational skills. We are very proud of her accomplishments and to have her as part of our fourth grade instructional team! This is a great time to make sure that you have provided the emergency dismissal form to us. Winter often surprises us with unpredictable weather events. It is important for us to know what arrangements we have for students to travel home safely when the regular school routine changes. Please look for the emergency form attached to this newsletter. Excitement is in the air with the opening of our playground. The playground was installed over the Thanksgiving break. We want to thank the Playground Committee for all of the continued efforts to select the playground, fundraising, working with the vendor, and then putting the installation together. We are so proud of the timeline of completion. It has been a record time! One year and now there is a playground! Southland Industries’ employees volunteered their time to be the installation crew. One of Southland Industries employees is one of our own parents, Dan Navarrete. Dan was instrumental in coordinating the Southland employees, supervising the installation and using a lot of his muscle power to complete the enormous project. KWC Crocs are overwhelmed with the generosity from so many individuals and families! During the winter break, enjoy the family and friends, rejuvenate, reflect and welcome the 2012 New Year! Money for Lunch? Check your child’s lunch

account balance from the convenience of your own com-puter on Café Prepay www.pay4lunch.com.

**You’ll need your child’s 6-digit ID number to register. The students use this number to buy lunch.

Parents will be notified of negative lunch bal-ances every Sunday night through the Connect– Ed system. An alternative lunch will be served if the ac-count is not paid when the balance is over $5.00. If the balance is not paid, the child will be given the opportunity to call home or will be given milk and a cheese sandwich for lunch if payment cannot be ar-ranged.

Please check your child’s balance online. We really don’t want to give out cheese sandwiches.

Counselor’s Corner During November, 1st grade students learned

about the importance of listening in the context of safety and friendship. I hope they have read the book they made during this lesson to you! In 2nd grade we discussed Bullying including the three types (physical, social/emotional and cyber) and discussed the rele-vance of Stop Walk and especially TALK (perhaps they were singing a catchy tune about this?). In grades 3-5 we discussed the concept of self-control. Please ask your child about the 4 steps of self control (identify your triggers, name your feelings, keep cool, and communicate with respect)

During December 1st grade will learn more about Bullying. In 2nd grade we will explore kindness and friendship. 3-5th grades will explore friendship in the context of the importance of communication and feel-ings. We will also learn about short term goal setting. Students will be encouraged to use the information from their 1st Q report card to assist us with writing a meaningful goal.

I am continuing to meet with groups of students during lunches. These will continue to run throughout the year in sessions of between four and ten weeks. No student may participate in a lunch group without parent/guardian permission. I am working hard to en-sure that every child that could benefit from a group is able to participate in one. If you did not receive my counseling program overview/group needs inventory during the first week of school there is a link to it on my webpage (I’m under “teachers”– then “Bresnan”).

Way to go Crocs!

Curious Corner @ the Library The grizzly bear is differ-

ent from the more common black bear due to the lump on its shoulders. The scien-tific name for the brown bear is Urus Arctos. The grizzly is often called Ursus Arctos horribilis. Ursus means bear in Latin. Arctos means bear in Greek. Do you need more facts? Well, this is the information that can be found at the media center desk. Our librarian, Karen Smith, and Library Assistant, Laura Berish have a display that changes monthly. There are pictures, written mate-rial, and sometimes even real objects that students can handle based on the topic that is selected. Our students gain new information as they stand in line waiting to get their books checked out. What a novel way to introduce new material! Stop by and take a look and you too may gain new knowledge!

Parents may also purchase gift books for your child’s classroom collections from the teacher wish lists in the Library.

Congratulations KWC is the recipient of a grant from

the Loudoun Education Foundation. Cynthia Cornwell, KWC’s Technology Resource Teacher, submitted a project, “Smooth Operator: Students as Lan-guage Practitioners.” The goal is to im-prove writing skills.

Initially, students in grades 4 and 5 will partici-pate in a learning lab in which they will wear lab coats as part of a collaborative team. Teachers will first model editing a writing sample as a whole class on the interactive whiteboard (IWB). Students will use our new ActiVotes to select the parts of the writ-ing sample that needs correction for grammar, punc-tuation, capitalization and usage errors and will make corrections by marking up the text on the IWB.

An investigation follows and student teams will edit a piece of writing wearing their lab coats and

“operating” on a writing sample for independent practice. It is a fun way to strengthen editing skills while working in collabora-tive groups. After the grant pe-riod, the lab coats will be avail-able for other classes to use in learning labs of all types.

Lost & Found The weather has been unsea-

sonably warm for this time of year. We have many numerous hats, gloves, jackets, sweaters, and sweatshirts, etc. that have remained unclaimed.

Each day our AM show high-lights the latest lost items. We hope that the school-wide broad-cast unites the owner with the item, but the Found area is growing larger each day and has overflowed to a second collection in the gym.

All unclaimed items will be donated to charity during winter break. Stop by and see if your child has lost an item and help find the item for your child!

PTA Sponsors Assembly PTA has arranged for Theater IV from Richmond,

VA to perform at a school-wide assembly on Friday, December 9 at 9:30 a.m. in the gym. They will be performing Little Red Hen, a twist on the classic tale.

Here’s a synopsis of the play from Theater IV’s web site:

“In Theatre IV’s musical version of The Little Red Hen, our speckled heroine is not very happy. The Little Red Hen is new to the farm and having trouble making friends with the other animals, Cow, Lamb, and Pig. Mean-while, Guss the Horse, who is carrying the grain that he will plant for the animals’ bread, meets Fox on his way back to the farm. Fox tricks Guss and steals the grain. Fox knows the farm animals will be forced to enter the woods to look for food and Fox will catch them for his dinner” (source: http://www.theatreiv.org/guide/littleredhen.pdf). Parents with afternoon kindergarten students are

invited to attend.

Green Kids Project Kenneth W. Culbert Elementary School is thrilled

to be participating in the Green Kids Project, affiliated with the Audubon Naturalist's Society. With grant money, we will be developing an outdoor classroom, training staff and using Nature as a way to reach all types of student learning styles.

At this point, we are going to begin Phase I of our project this spring in the east court yard to include some type of garden and an outdoor classroom. The students will be involved in the planning of what type of garden we plant as well as the name of the project. Check out http://www.audubonnaturalist.org/default.asp?page=551 for more information on the Green Kids Project.

Outreach News The holidays are fast approaching. The Parent

Liaison provides assistance to some KWC families. If your family wishes to help, KWC will be accepting donations to support our families in need.

Donations should be in the form of gift cards. If you choose to do this, please send the gift card to school with a notation “For the Parent Liaison-Holiday.” Helping others is a great life lesson for children. Thanks for your support.
