2017 Trinity Term No. 02 Newsletter 28.04.17

Key Values:

Innovation, Confidence, Aspiration, Respect, Enthusiasm Dear Parents and Children

Welcome to this week’s newsletter. This week the Headteacher’s report includes information on Class Photos, Mrs Dartnall, Staff, Anti-distraction/fidget toys, choosing grids, Youth Trust Awards, Reading Books, Nursery Resourcing, Stay and Play sessions and Fashion Show.

Class Photos

In readiness for class photos on Tuesday May 2nd please ensure your child is in full Summer uniform as detailed on last week ’s newsletter. In particular, the correct short sleeve length and sock colour.

Mrs Dartnall

First I would like to say a huge thankyou to all staff, children and parents for making me feel so welcome at Hull Collegiate School.

Wow! I must say from the 6 February which was my first day of teaching in school, what a fantastic experience I have had. We had a wonderful World Book Day, a marvellous Mother’s day celebration and a super spring activity afternoon with parents. It was lovely to meet so many parents and visitors attending the Open Day and this was on top of our full enriched curriculum delivered in school.

I have worked in education for the last 8 years. I have experience covering PPA teaching classes of 30 children, covering FS1 through to Year 2 following teachers planning and delivering interventions to individuals or groups of mixed ability children for phonics, literacy and numeracy. I supported a pupil with SEND through FS1 and FS2 maintaining her IEP and individual needs. I have supported guided reading groups and individual readers. I was responsible for teaching a class of pupil premium children in a specialist classroom responsible for reading target grades for mixed ability children. I organised sports days for the whole school and sports relief community events. Previous to working in education, I worked in Leisure Management and taught sports to children and adults. During a career break to raise a family I ran a parent and toddler trampoline club called Little Jumpers.

I’m so proud to be part of the Hull Collegiate School. The school is second to none and it is a real pleasure to work here with dedicated staff and children, all of whom work to high standards and have a passion for education and learning.

One inspiring moment came from a pupil whilst walking back to the classroom when a pupil said to me “Mrs Dartnall you’re too old to run aren’t you?” Mmmm! (chuckling inside) I replied “Do you know, Mrs Dartnall has run the Great North Run half marathon”. The pupil put her hands on her hips and said “Why didn’t you do the whole run?”...

Staff This week we are saying a warm goodbye to Mrs Charlton, who leaves us today in order to spend more time at home and on her hobbies of health and fitness activities and baking. We wish her all the very best.

Anti-distraction/fidget toys A very small number of our pupils, with a recognised difficulty maintaining focus, have these toys to help them remain focused in lessons; this is acceptable. However, the toy must not make a noise and it must not be used in a way that causes a distraction to other pupils or themselves. A member of staff will remove the toy if this is happening. A suitable alternative may be suggest-ed by Mrs Manton. If a pupil has no recognised difficulty maintaining focus, they should not bring them into school.

Choosing Grids

We will be adding half termly choosing grids to our homework across Prep from this half term. Above is an example from Reception. These will include an element of social action. Each child is encouraged to complete all 9 actions over the half term and return their grid once completed.

Youth Trust Award

As part of our commitment to social action, from September, Year 4 will be taking part in The Archbishop of York’s Youth Trust Programme, a social action project which we feel is an important part of our holistic education. We will look to do a social action this programme annually to build character and resilience.

Fashion Show

The Friends Committee are working extremely hard to put together a range of events for our school community. They are raising

funds to support whole school treehouse, a Senior school gym and a number of other smaller bid requests across the whole

school. We welcome any feedback on past or future events and appreciate your continued support. If you are interested in

joining our committed group please email Jo Dunn on [email protected] or alternatively the Friends on

[email protected]. I would also ask that, if you would not wish to join the committee itself but would be able to

give a couple of hours of time adhoc to set up for our events, this would also be appreciated and is where the committee

requires your support the most. I hope to see you at the fashion show on May 12th.

Have a lovely bank holiday weekend.

Headteacher’s Commendations

Charley Jennings, Jasper Dixon, Soley Fridriksdottir & Zoe Silk

Megan Wright

The pupils were given a research task to find out about a conventional power station and one built to use renewable energy. They were required to find out how it worked and suggest the advantages and disad-vantages. The pupils pro-duced a poster or booklet about what they found.

Megan, for her ever increasing enthusiasm and positive attitude and mindset to developing a deeper under-standing of Maths. She is con-tinually pushing herself to complete the challenges set, both in and out the classroom. Well done Megan!

Foundation Stage News

On Monday, our Reception classes spent a wonderful day at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park. As well as being able to experience the sight of a wide range of wild animals at relatively close quarters, we enjoyed a wild life classroom activity finding out about os-triches and their eggs, about why and how camels moult, and studying a model of a polar bear skull with its extremely large sharp teeth. We were also delighted to witness the antics of the lemurs, in particular the parents of two three-week-old baby striped lemurs, as they raced up and down the trees with the tiny babies clinging tightly to their mother’s fur!

On Thursday, Mr Dyson’s class enjoyed a fun-filled day at the Forest School site at Wawne, near Beverley, where Mr Dyson and Mrs Dartnall were delighted to observe the children working so effectively and supportively together on a wide variety of wood-land activities, demonstrating a deep level of emotional and social learning.

Our Adventurers have now added some new visitors in the form of some ladybird larvae, several caterpillars and a moth cocoon to their investigation area, and are looking forward to watching how they all develop. They have also been working hard at de-veloping their recognition of the initial letter sounds in words, as well as thinking hard about what further sounds they can hear within different words.

Our Explorers have been focussing on a range of spider-themed stories and rhymes, as well as exploring our grounds on spider hunts and finding out facts about spiders from books and via the computer. They have also been developing their understanding of the number eight, enjoying creating images of spiders on paper and using the interactive whiteboard, and working on their fine motor skills by adding peg legs to spider bodies and making woven webs.

Last Week’s Dyslexia Support Event

On 20 April, Ben Weeks, a former pupil at Hull Collegiate School, came to speak to a group of dyslexic pupils and their parents. Ben talked eloquently about his frustrations when learning to read and write, knowing that other pupils could read faster and write better than he could. He received specialist dyslexia tuition during his time at Hull Collegiate School and he honoured his former teacher, Mrs Carlisle, for her support and advice. He encouraged the pupils to never give up and to stick with the ‘packs’ (revision homework), because it will pay off. He said that having an SpLD (specific learning difficulty) doesn’t mean that you are thick and listed some inspiring people with dyslexia or dyspraxia, such as Tom Cruise, Daniel Radcliffe, Cara Delevingne, Steven Spielberg and Richard Branson. Ben didn’t realise until he was older that his tiredness was related to his SpLD. He asked parents and teachers to be aware that pupils with an SpLD were having to work much harder than most and needed to find ways to manage their tiredness, such as doing homework at weekends or having rest breaks. He told pupils to take every bit of help and support that they were entitled to and not to let embarrassment get in the way. Ben also reassured pupils that there would be help beyond school as they were entitled to support in the workplace and university. Ben now studies Law at the University of Hull and was full of praise for the care that the university had given him. Ben’s good humour and perseverance were a wonderful example to the younger pupils and we wish him all the best for the future. Ben is happy to pop in again and speak to anyone who missed it or happy to speak to any one on a one to one basis if this would help. Mrs Manton

Head lice

A parent has recently informed us that, after routinely inspecting their child’s hair, they found some evidence of head lice.

Firstly, we would ask parents to check their child’s hair thoroughly every day – combing wet hair with a very fine-toothed comb and conditioner is recommended weekly. Head lice can be found in very clean hair as well as in less clean and no one can afford to be complacent about this. Secondly, we would ask that the School be notified so that we can monitor the situation. If your child complains of an itchy scalp this maybe an indication of head lice and vigilance is recommended.

The problem is very easily dealt with and should not be regarded as any cause for alarm.
