MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR As we head back for the new school year, MDC is continuously working to strengthen and advance dance in the state. In April, MDC voted in a new Executive Committee (EC): Greg Patterson, Chair; Glenn Del Vecchio, Vice-Chair; Denise Allen, Treasurer (Denise’s term ends in October, at which time Missy Lilje will take on this role); and Elizabeth Kattner- Ulrich, Secretary. As MDC’s new Chair, I hope to continue along the path of my predecessors and continue to establish MDC as a leading advocate for dance in the state. With that in mind, the EC is developing new ideas and initiatives to implement over the next year. These initiatives were further developed in MDC’s August retreat, so keep an eye out for new and exciting things! Many thanks go out to Robin Wilson (former Chair), for her dedication and hard work. Although Robin has stepped down, she still chairs the MDC Festival committee. The 2016 MDC Dance Fest will again take place in Grand Rapids at the Grand Rapids Ballet studios. Finally, I’d like to welcome our newest board members and remind everyone that you are always invited to join our cause by joining the board or volunteering to serve on one of our subcommittees. Association? Consider becoming the Student Liaison between your school and the MDC!

Looking for experience working in a nonprofit? Consider becoming

a volunteer intern in the summer or school year. Many high schools and colleges give credit for field study and community outreach.

MDC PROUDLY ANNOUNCES 2016 MDC SUMMER STUDY SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

$200 Ann Zirulnik Summer Study Recipient: Taylor Nichols Taylor Nichols will be a junior at Clio High School and studies at the Flint School of Performing Arts as a member of the Flint Youth Ballet. She attended

American Ballet Theatre’s summer intensive in New York and is very appreciative of the assistance her award provided. Taylor looks forward to seeking out college programs and deciding which university she’ll attend to further her dance career. Taylor says, “This experience opened up the world of dance for me. Through new teachers, new styles of dance, and even through new friends. With vigorous and

spirited training, I have become a more, versatile, knowledgeable, and overall stronger dancer.”

$500 Gay Delanghe Summer Study Recipient: Shaela Owens Shaela Owens returns to Oakland University as a BFA major in the fall and a new member of the OU Repertory Dance Company. She attended the Great Lakes Dance

The GLDF faculty, which included Natasha Overturff-Denny from Giordano Dance Chicago and Ruben Graciani, (Chair of Dance at Point Park University), have helped me to improve tremendously. “I will definitely use the knowledge that I’ve gained from this intensive to better myself both in dance, and in life.”

UM FLINT DANCERS RESPOND TO WATER CRISIS

FLINT: Thousands of empty water bottles poured onto the stage as University of Michigan-Flint undergraduate students performed Precipitate, a community-centered response to the Flint water crisis, choreographed by faculty member Emma Davis for the Department of Theatre and Dance’s annual Spring Dance Concert held in April 2016. The dance was devised from personal experiences, with many of those involved in the piece living in the city or spending time on the downtown campus. The dance embodied stories of those directly affected by the Flint water crisis, giving insight to audiences from outside the city, while the creation process shared by UM-Flint dance students and community members at Vista Center provided community catharsis and created stronger relationships both on and off stage.

FLINT-AREA DANCE ORGANIZATIONS COLLABORATE ON MASTER CLASSES

FLINT: Four Flint-area MDC member organizations have come together to collaborate on projects to support the development of community among area dance organizations. The participating members are Creative Expression Dance Studio, Flint School of Performing Arts, El Ballet Folklórico Estudiantil, and Young People’s Ballet Theatre. The group offered students an opportunity to visit other Flint area dance organizations, meet one another, and explore new and different dance styles, and build a more cohesive dance community in Flint.

DANCE LANSING HOSTS DR. JUANITA SUAREZ RESIDENCY

LANSING: In summer 2016, Dr. Juanita Suarez completed a three week residency as part of the DANCE Lansing Community Dance Project and presented a Lecture Demonstration of her work in Latina Dance at Michigan State University's Wharton Center Pasant Theatre. Says Dr. Suarez, "What is happening in dance in Lansing, Michigan has delighted and inspired me. The model that Happendance, with its partners and associates, has created in DANCE Lansing Community Dance Project encourages creative collaboration and brings dance into the community in a way that is reflective and relevant. It is cutting edge and a model for the future."

CHILDREN’S BALLET THEATRE BECOMES CAPITAL BALLET THEATRE

LANSING: Children’s Ballet Theatre of Michigan’s board of directors has announced the company has changed its name to Capital Ballet Theatre (CBT). This nonprofit ballet company and academy is an audition based, pre-professional company comprised of male and female dancers aged 8-18, with training opportunities and ballet instruction offered through their academy, master classes, intensives, and rehearsals. CBT has been in operation for over 35 years. It is an all-volunteer organization with the exception of the artistic staff. CBT has a longstanding relationship with Children’s Miracle Network, providing performance opportunities for its dancers.

NEW DANCE COMPANY FOUNDED IN MID-MICHIGAN

ALMA: Third Coast Dance Company (TCDC) is a mid-Michigan-based dance company that is committed to creating local, quality, accessible modern dance. The goal of TCDC is to make dances about the people, place, and community that they inhabit. Third Coast Dance Company began in 2016 as a conversation between two dance artists, Kristen Bennett and Lynn Bowman, who were both on faculty at Alma College in Michigan. Both artists have traveled far and wide teaching and choreographing and both agreed that mid-Michigan was an ideal place to live and work. Hence, they wanted a platform for making dance, teaching, and sharing in the middle of the mitten. The name "Third Coast” is a colloquial reference to the fact that Michigan has the greatest length of coast outside the east and west coasts of the US. Lynn and Kristen envisioned a company with a collaborative and democratic approach to dance making. Refusing to embrace a single idea of what a dance company should be, Lynn and Kristen are constantly evolving and sharing in their teaching, choreographing, problem solving, and leadership. The TCDC aims to connect artists and art consumers in the mid-Michigan region so as to develop a more self-reliant and resilient dance community. They look forward to growing roots in Michigan and hope to collaborate with other dance artists in the mitten.

TAKE ROOT: GROWING ROOTS IN THE COMMUNITY

ROCHESTER: Take Root, a nonprofit professional contemporary dance company, was founded in 2013. Its directors and founders, Ali Woerner and Thayer Jonutz, have taken the seven-member company nationally and internationally, including South Korea and Berlin. Take Root is a company-in-residence at Oakland University. Its multidisciplinary approach to concepts and movement allows for accessibility to all ages and backgrounds. This year, Take Root gained momentum through several outreach programs. Over the past year and a half, they have held a Dance for Parkinson’s Disease class once a month for those living with Parkinson’s Disease and their caregivers/spouses. Ali was awarded the Oakland County Executive’s 2016 Elite 40 Under 40 title for this work. Take Root was also recognized by the Governor’s Fitness Awards through a nomination for An Extraordinary Event. Thayer Jonutz leads Take Root in its Arts Education outreach program and has been awarded several mini grants to support it. Take Root will visit selected Pontiac schools this fall to work with the children and bring collaborative dance and music to their schools.

WAYNE STATE ADDS DANCE FACULTY MEMBER

DETROIT: The Maggie Allesee Department of Theatre and Dance at Wayne State University announced the new appointment of Dr. Biba Bell. Bell joins the faculty in the Dance Area as assistant professor. Bell’s work is heavily invested in relationships between dance and architecture and dance in the museum, and research projects investigate contemporary choreography through the lenses of site-specificity, affect, gender, and modernism. Her critical writing is published in Performance Research Journal and numerous performance/art based publications including Sound American, Movement Research Performance Journal, The Front, and Pastelgram. Bell is co-editor of Movement Research’s online journal Critical Correspondence and is guest editor of Detroit Research’s second issue, “On Dance.”

CARR CENTER PRESENTS DETROIT DANCE INTENSIVE

DETROIT: On July 18-25, the Carr Center presented its annual summer dance intensive for dancers ages 7-15. The dancers took three classes each day in ballet, Dunham/Horton, and jazz/modern technique. In addition, the dancers had dance composition lessons, choreography lessons, vocabulary building, and a daily nature dance walk. The intensive ended with a performance showcase in Harmonie Park, with the dancers performing three dances they had learned during the intensive. The Carr Center is located in downtown Detroit in the beautiful Harmonie Park district. Denise M. Allen, Michael Alexander, and Lisa McCall were the dance instructors and choreographers for the dance intensive.

OAKLAND DANCE PROGRAM WELCOMES GUEST ARTISTS

ROCHESTER: Every semester, the dance program at Oakland University invites guest artists to work with its students. Three guests are expected this fall. Catherine Coury and Mario Bermudez Gil are from one of Israel’s foremost cultural institutions, the critically acclaimed Batsheva Dance Company, which was founded by Baroness Batsheva de Rothschild who enlisted Martha Graham as its first artistic adviser. Ohad Naharin, one of the world’s preeminent contemporary choreographers, is the current artistic director. Catherine, a graduate of the University of Michigan, is a former member of BDC, and Mario, originally from Spain, is a current member. Both previously danced with companies in New York. Rebecca McLindon Blanchard will also be a visiting guest artist. She is a former member of Eisenhower Dance and a current member of Chicago Repertory Ballet. The guest artists’ choreography will be performed during the students’ four end-of-semester concerts on December 1-3, 2016. Detailed information about the concerts is available on the OU calendar at oakland.edu/mtd.
