MESSAGE FROM THE BRANCH COMMITTEE:

Greetings to all the Free State branch members, and hope 2011 is treating you well.

As we all know , a newsletter flourishes or wilts based on the contributions made by its members. The Free State Committee would like you to keep on sending to us all the exciting things you are doing in your areas of work that may benefit fellow members.

The deadline for the next newsletter is 31 May 2011 and the second one will be released in June 2011. Together we stand, divided we fall.

THE SIGHTS AND SOUNDS OF THE SCANDANAVIA

To celebrate the end of 2010, the LIASA Free State Branch, on the 3rd of November, invited the former chairperson and 2008 national librarian of the year winner, Ms Dora Ackerman to retake the journey she undertook to the Scandinavian countries which formed part of her prize.

Members listened with envy as she took them down memory lane reliving all the steps she took as she travelled from one country to the next. Amongst the countries she visited were Sweden, Norway and Belgium.

Notable in her presentation was the value these countries place on their heritage like libraries. LIASA Free State members further got a chance to hear more about the cultures of these countries and her general experience. The main aim for inviting her was to inspire the branch members to work hard so as to one day be able to “show and tell”

What was unfortunately missing in her presentation was the Madagascar soundtrack “I like to move it”, that reverberated throughout the gala dinner hall at the 2009 LIASA conference at CUT.

A CONFERENCE TO REMEMBER: MR Arko-Cobbah

In line with the theme of the day: “ SHOW AND TELL”, Mr.Arko-cobbah shared with Free State branch members his experiences at the the 76th IFLA conference held at Gothenburg, Sweden.

He presented a paper titled “ Promoting sustainable development in Africa: civil society and free access to information” under the banner of the Access to Information Network. He thanked his institution and IFLA for making it possible for him to attend the memorable conference.

FREE STATE LIASA’S 2010 LIBRARIAN OF THE YEAR STRIKE SILVER!

Ms Elmari Kruger, Assistant Director: Motheo District Library in the Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation was announced as the Library and Information Association’s (LIASA) Librarian of the Year: Free State Branch. Whilst still basking in her success in the provincial competition, she further went on to grab first runner-up in the 2010 National Librarian of the year competition held at St Georges Hotel, Gauteng.

Elmari further contributed a lot in the planning of several new library buildings by working closely with architects to ensure they complywith today’s requirements and trends. Through her contribution in 2008, Selosesha Public Library in Thaba Nchu received an architectural reward for functionality and effectiveness. She further received an award for assistance in library servicedelivery from Mangaung Correctional Centre in 2009.

LISLIG FREE STATE VISITED THEINFORMATION SERVICE ON HIGHER EDUCATION (ISHE) AT THE UFS: by Erna MostertOn 23 February 2011 LiSLIG Free State visited the Information Service on Higher Education (ISHE) as part of its branch activities for the first term. ISHE is a resource centre specialising in the collection of information on higher education. The two Information Officers, Elrita Grimsley and Limpho Seoka gave the members a hearty welcome with tea/coffee and apple tart and then told them more about their work: The information overload and constant need for new information in higher education places an enormous burden on the shoulders of academics and students in higher education who are trying to keep abreast of new developments, trends and innovations. The aim of the ISHE is to facilitate research and development in higher education and renders a non-profit service to the higher education community. The service recognizes the individual user as someone special and strives to provide an efficient service.

World Theatre Day – 2011 Compiled by the National Drama Library: Bloemfontein

Each year on March 27, the international theatre community celebrates World Theatre Day. Founded in 1961 by the International theatre Institute (ITI),

World Theatre Day was created to celebrate theatre around the world, with various national and international theatre events organized to mark the occasion.

Each year, a theatre figure of world stature is invited to share his or her reflections on theatre and international harmony.

What is known as the International Message is translated into more than 20 languages, read for spectators before performances in theatres throughout the world, printed in hundreds of newspapers and magazines and broadcast by radio and television.

This year, accomplished playwright, actress, director, academic and humanitarian Jessica A. Kaahwa (see photo)from Uganda gave the 2011 International Message.

SONGSTRESS SINGS FOR EDUCATIONIt was no April fools when the multi talented singer Simphiwe Dana performed here in Bloemfontein in a Black Culture Education Tour.

Despite the pouring rain the faithful supporters braved the elements to enjoy the night with Dana. As part of her social responsibility she decided to take a national tour to highlight the lack of reading culture in the black communities through her music.The audience had earlier been asked to each bring a book as a form of donation to the cause. As the saying goes: time flies when you having a good time, many could not believe the show was over when the MC of the day Lupi Ngcayisa, a well known philanthropist ,thanked everyone for the support.

2011 SA LIBRARY WEEK CELEBRATIONS AT MANGAUNG CORRECTIONAL CENTRE

Every year the correctional centers all over the country celebrate their existence by marketing the services they offer to the public.

At this year’s celebrations invited guests witnessed activities like “reading out loud”, a flute tune by an inmate, a display of 19 pieces of art, movies and poetry session. Inmates also got a chance to listen to a speech by the librarian on the importance of SA Library Week especially this year’s theme: “Read in your Language @ your library.

120th ANNIVESARY OF THE BIRTH OF THE QUEEN OF CRIME

Agatha Mary Clarissa Miller was born 15 September 1890 in Torquay, England. The youngest in a family of three, Agatha was like her mother , Clara, very shy whilst her father, Frederick was an outgoing personality. Though she did not attend formal education, Agatha by the age of five had already taught herself to read.

Although Agatha had amused herself as a child, acting out stories and make believe, her writing career really began after her sister Madge challenged her to write a novel. It took her several years to get her first book The Mysterious Affair at Styles published- with the publisher suggesting an alternative final chapter- but the reviews were kind and the murder by poison so well described that Agatha received the unprecedented honour of a review in the Pharmaceutical Journal!

The Queen of Crime, wrote 80 detective novels, short story collections and 19 plays. She also wrote romances under the name Mary Westmacott, but she is best remembered for her crime novels and her successful West End theatre plays.

On 15 September 2010, Agatha Christie would have been 120 years old. This was celebrated at Torquay, her birthplace, with Agatha Christie Festival from 12-19 of the same month.

Indigenous Knowledge Symposium The 3rd Indigenous Knowledge Symposium was held at the UFS QwaQwa Campus in October 2011.

The event was organized by the library management of the Qwaqwa Campus, Mr Stoffel Kok and Ms Zuki Ketiwe. It was a great success and we look forward to this year’s event.
