It gives me immense pleasure to pen a few words for our e-bulletin. At the onset I would like to thank the

last year’s editors and congratulate the newly selected editors for the current year.

Our first consideration is always in the best interest of the students. Our goal is to promote academic

excellence and continuous improvement.

I believe that excellence in education is aided by creating a learning environment in which all learners are

supported in maximizing their potential and talents. Education needs to focus on personalized learning

and instruction, while promoting an education system that is impartial, universally accessible, and meeting

the needs of all students.

It is of paramount importance that our learners have sufficient motivation and encouragement in order to

achieve their aims. We are all very proud of you, our students, and your accomplishments and look

forward to watching as you put your mark on the profession in the years ahead.

The call of the time is to progress, not merely to move ahead. Our progressive Management is looking

forward and wants our Institute to flourish as a Post Graduate Institute of Excellence. Steps are taken in

this direction and fruits of these efforts will be received by our students in the near future. Our Teachers

are committed and dedicated for the development of the institution by imparting their knowledge and play

the role of facilitator as well as role model to our students.

The Pharmacy profession is thriving with a multitude of possibilities, opportunities and positive

challenges. At Guru Nanak Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, our focus is on holistic

needs of our students.

HISTORICAL ARTICLE

Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519)

More commonly known as the greatest artist in the history of mankind,

Leonardo da Vinci was also a magnificent philosopher and scientist. The most

influential figure in the Italian Renaissance, Leonardo is widely considered to

be an inventive multi-genius. Countless sketches describe that Leonardo had

found out the basis for many inventions that were understood hundreds of

years after his death.

Early Life and Education:

Born on 15 April in 1452 in Vinci, Italy, Leonardo was the illegitimate child of

Ser Piero da Vinci, a notary, and Caterina, a country girl. He stayed with his

father’s family and they moved to Florence when he was just 12. At the

tender age of 14, Leonardo started out his artist’s apprenticeship at the

studio of Andrea del Verrocchio (1435-1488), an Italian sculptor, goldsmith

and painter. The young Leonardo earned a place into the painter’s guild in

1472 when he was just 20 years old. At 26, he became an expert painter and

owned a separate studio.

Contributions and Achievements:

The art of painting made Leonardo knowledgeable about anatomy and

perspective. In addition to painting, Verrocchio’s studio also offered

technical and mechanical arts and sculpture. Leonardo developed an interest

in architecture so he went on to study engineering. His versatile and

originative nature was born of a desire to promote creativity.

After a decade of highly original work as an artist, Leonardo wrote to

several wealthy men in 1482 to help finance his projects. The Duke of Milan,

Lodovico Sforza (1452-1508), accepted his offer as Leonardo told him that

he could design useful war weapons like guns and mines, and also structures

like collapsible bridges. He lived in Milan with the Duke from 1482 to 1409,

reportedly creating very innovational war machines. He also did painting and

sculpture, as well as urban planning for large-scale water projects. His advice

was sought for various projects related to architecture, military affairs and

fortifications. There, he also wrote about making a telescope to view the

moon.

Most of Leonardo’s sketches and paintings depict a scientific phenomenon

with an artistic and creative approach. On the other hand, his anatomical

findings, including information about the structure of muscles and blood

vessels, were surprisingly precise. His legendary masterpiece, Mona Lisa

(1503-1506), is said to have an unusual smile which depicts how the muscles

of the face function to make a smile. Leonardo also planned to create a

mechanical flying machine. Leonardo discovered that flying, contrary to the

popular notion, by attaching a pair of wings to a person’s arms and then

flapping them like a bird, is simply not possible. He concluded that by using

levers, the wings of a flying structure could be controlled.

Leonardo also created a sketch of an early helicopter that even featured a

preventive parachute. He, however, believed that his flying machines were

not executable, partly because of his lack of knowledge about bird flight. As

a result, he started studying animal anatomy, particularly of birds and bats.

When France attacked Italy in 1944, Leonardo came back to Florence after

the subsequent downfall of the Duke of Milan. After his return, he became

fully engaged in mathematical studies. Leonardo also accepted an invitation

by the Duke of Valencia, Cesare Borgia (1475-1507), to work as a senior

military architect and general engineer. During his tenure, he analyzed

geology and proposed to divert the Arno River and develop a canal that would

allow Florence access to the sea.

Later Life and Death:

Leonardo was approached by King Francis I of France (1494-1547) who

gifted him a beautiful and peaceful castle near Amboise in the Loire Valley.

This is the place where he completed some of his unfinished paintings. Some

of his undeveloped ideas also include designs for a canal to link up two rivers

that would have made a water route from the Atlantic Ocean to the

Mediterranean Sea. Leonardo foresaw that the world could be swallowed up

by massive floods in the years to come. His brilliant series of drawings

display water in violent motion.

Leonardo da Vinci died at Amboise, Central France, on May 2, 1519. He was

67 years old.

encodes resistance to a drug that is used as a last resort, has been found for the

first time in Shigella flexneri. Shigella are one of the leading causes of diarrhea

worldwide.

A new study shows improved personalized inpatient assessments can enhance the

accuracy of the prescribed asthma therapy a child receives. A physician's asking

of the six key asthma control questions can help.

Backyard chickens need more regulation:(2nd March , 2018)

Historically, keeping backyard chickens was a response to economic hardship --

whether it was in the Depression or during wartime food rationing. But a growing

number of chickens today are roaming or are caged on small family farms and in

backyards, as suburban and urban poultry gains more popularity among

consumers.

Early psychosis programs significantly reduce patient mortality,

Researchers have found that specialized programs for early psychosis can

substantially reduce patient mortality.

Children with marginally low birth weight needs treatment:(2nd

Children with a birth weight under 2.5 kilos stand at risk of becoming

underweight and can experience cognitive difficulties as well as diabetes and

cardiovascular disease later in life. However, early iron supplementation seems to

provide some protection.

Sedative may prevent delirium in the ICU:(2nd March , 2018) A low dose of the sedative dexmedetomidine given at night may prevent delirium

in critically ill patients, according to new research.

Nervous system puts the brakes on inflammation:(2nd March ,

2018)

Cells in the nervous system can 'put the brakes' on the immune response to infections

in the gut and lungs to prevent excessive inflammation, according to new research.

This insight may one day lead to new ways to treat diseases caused by unchecked

inflammation, such as asthma and inflammatory bowel disease.

Rethinking childbirth education could save AU $97 million

Research shows antenatal education not only reduces the rates of medical

interventions during childbirth, but can save the healthcare system up to AU$97

million per year.

Here's how viruses inactivate the immune system, causing

cancer:(2nd March , 2018)

It's no new news that viruses cause cancer. For example, human papillomavirus (HPV)

causes almost all of the more than 500,000 annual worldwide cases of cervical cancer.

This makes sense: By driving the proliferation of infected cells, viruses speed

manufacture of more viruses, but excessive cellular proliferation is also a hallmark of

cancer. Now a new review explores another strategy that viruses use to ensure their own

survival, also with the unfortunate byproduct of promoting cancer, namely the viral

ability to manipulate the human immune system. This new understanding may help to

increase the effectiveness of immune-based therapies against cancer.

RECENT VIOLENTS PROBLEMS OF DEPRESSION AND

ANXIETY AMONG STUDENTS

Depression and anxiety are prevalent problems in colleges across the country. in the past

15 years, depression has doubled and suicide tripled. According to a survey from the

Anxiety Disorders Association of America (ADAA), universities and colleges also have

seen an increase in students seeking services for anxiety disorders. The average age of

onset for many mental health conditions is the typical college age range of 18 to 24 years

old, said Courtney Knowles, executive director of The JED Foundation, a charitable

organization that aims to reduce suicide and improve mental health for college students.

In fact, according to the National Institute of Mental Health, 75 percent of all individuals

with an anxiety disorder will experience symptoms before age 22, as cited in the ADAA

Report. Other students, who might not have clinical anxiety or depression, still suffer.

According to the 2006 American College Health Association Survey, 45 percent of

women and 36 percent of men felt so depressed that it was difficult to function.

Cause of depression:

During college students deal with a unique amount of stressors . Specifically, college calls

for a significant transition, where students experience many firsts, including new lifestyle,

friends, roommates, exposure to new cultures and alternate ways of thinking, a licensed

clinical social worker and mental health expert for Campus Calm. When students can’t

manage these firsts, they’re more likely to struggle. “If students do not feel adequate or

prepared to cope with the new environment of a college campus, they could easily

become susceptible to depression and anxiety,” Feelings of inadequacy can stem from

academic stressors. In college, competition is much more significant. So, there is the

palpable pressure to do well, whether the demands come from parents or the student

Adjusting to college also influences identity . When students head off to college, the

familiar people are no longer there to reinforce the identity these students have created for

themselves.” This can make students “disoriented and feel a loss of their sense of self,”

contributing to symptoms of depression and anxiety. A shaky identity and lack of

confidence can lead college students to make poor choices about drinking and drugs. In

fact, according to the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) report,

Wasting the Best and the Brightest: Substance Abuse at America’s Colleges and

Universities, 45 percent of college students binge drink and nearly 21 percent abuse

prescription or illegal drugs.

Possible treatment:

For students struggling with anxiety and depression, the best place to start is the on-

campus counseling center. Unfortunately, some centers do have waiting lists. While

waiting for services — or if your school doesn’t have a counseling center — get a referral

for a therapist in the community or speak with an approachable professor, career

counselor or resident assistant. Also, you can call the National Suicide Prevention Hotline

(800) 273-TALK, which isn’t just a crisis line; students can get advice and have someone

to talk to. To avoid Identity Disorientation, before leaving home, ask yourself “who you

are on the inside, not just the label you’ve taken back at home, such as captain of the

cheerleading squad or the straight A student.” Consider the following:

What makes me happy, sad, frustrated, etc.?

What are my values and beliefs?

What accomplishments and traits am I proud of?

Can I stick up for myself and ensure my emotional and physical safety in a way

that is socially acceptable and appropriate?

Identify connections

Being honest with yourself and observing changes in mood and feeling as they occur may

help you to identify some of the sources of the feelings of depression.

Talk about problems

Discussing problems and feelings with those involved, or an understanding friend or a

health professional (counsellor, psychologist, social worker, psychiatrist or doctor) can

sometimes bring about a resolution before a critical stage of depression is reached.

Exercise regularly

Exercising burns up tension, helps you relax, may improve sleep patterns and leads to the

release of endorphins that lift your mood.

Identify times when you feel less depressed

Working out what it is that you do when you feel less depressed, can help you identify

ways of lifting your depression.

Consider anti-depressant medication

Taking a prescribed anti-depressant medication is appropriate in some cases. It helps by

lessening feelings of depression and enables you to feel more able to tackle your

problems. There are different types of anti-depressants. They should be taken under

medical supervision. Consult the Health Service or your doctor.

Seek professional help when:

pain and problems outweigh pleasure;

when the severity and persistence of symptoms impair day to day functioning;

when the pain seems too much and you cannot see a way out.

DISEASE RELATED BREAKING NEWS

Lassa Fever – Nigeria:( 1st March , 2018)

From 1 January through 25 February 2018, 1081 suspected cases and 90 deaths have

been reported from 18 states (Anambra, Bauchi, Benue, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Ekite,

Federal Capital Territory, Gombe, Imo, Kogi, Lagos, Nasarawa, Ondo, Osun, Plateau,

Rivers, and Taraba). During this period, 317 cases have been classified as confirmed

and eight as probable, including 72 deaths (case fatality rate for confirmed and

probable cases = 22%). A total of 2845 contacts have been identified in 18 states.

Fourteen health care workers have been affected in six states (Benue, Ebonyi, Edo,

Kogi, Nasarawa, and Ondo), with four deaths (case fatality rate= 29%). As of 18

February, four out of the 14 health care workers were confirmed positive for Lassa

fever.

FDA Approves ZTlido:(28th February, 2018)

Sorrento Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ:SRNE) (“Sorrento”), and its majority-

owned subsidiary, Scilex Pharmaceuticals Inc. (“Scilex”), received approval from

the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for ZTlido (lidocaine topical

system) 1.8%. ZTlido is indicated for the relief of pain associated with post-

herpetic neuralgia (PHN), also referred to as post-shingles pain. ZTlido is a major

advancement in analgesics because of its proprietary adhesion technology

demonstrating 12-hour wear with efficient lidocaine delivery, even during

exercise.

CONDOLENCE MEETING FOR 'BABUJI' AT GNIPST The GNIPST family members today gathered at its auditorium to pay homage to our

beloved Chairman Sardar Jodh Singh, whose sudden demise has left all the members

of his family and each member of JIS Group grief-stricken.

Dr. Abhijit Sengupta, Director, GNIPST expressed his respectful tribute to Babuji

through few of his words at the onset of the condolence meeting.

Principal GNIHM, Prof. Xavier Gomes was present at the condolence meeting as

Chief Guest.

He shared his experiences with Sardar Jodh Singh and conveyed his deepest

condolence for the departed soul.

Few students of GNIPST also shared their feelings and experience about Babuji on

this sorrowful occasion.

Dr. Sengupta and Prof. Gomes paid tribute to Sardar Jodh Singh by lighting a lamp

and putting garland to his photograph.

The condolence meeting ended by observing a two minute silence to honor Sardar

Jodh Singh.

May the departed soul of Babuji rest in peace.

NATIONAL SEMINAR, 2017:

National Seminar was organised by Clinical Research Centre,

Jadavpur University, IPGA Bengal branch in collaboration

with Guru Nanak Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and

Technology at Triguna Sen Auditorium, Jadavpur University on

22nd November, 2017.

Dr. Abhijit Sengupta, Director cum Principal of GNIPST

presided over the National Seminar.

Ms.Priyanka Ray of GNIPST conducted the inaugural session.

Dr. Sumana Chatterjee, Dr. Lopamudra Datta, Dr. Prerona Saha

and Dr. Sriparna KunduSen of GNIPST acted as chairpersons of

the four scientific sessions.

Mr Debabrata GhoshDastidar of GNIPST evaluated the poster

session with other dignitaries.

Congratulation to Mr Nilayan Guha of M.Pharm who was

Volume of GNIPST BULLETIN. All the followers of GNIPST

OTHERS:

On 24th and 25th February, 2015 Swamiji of Gourio Math was delivered some motivational lectuers in GNIPST.

The students of GNIPST participated in the 4th Sardar Jodh SinghTrophy organised by NIT on 20th February, 2015.

The general body meeting of APTI, Bengal Branch has been

conducted at GNIPST on 15th June, 2012. The program started

with a nice presentation by Dr. Pulok Kr. Mukherjee, School of

Natural Products, JU on the skill to write a good manuscript for

publication in impact journals. It was followed by nearly two

hour long discussion among more than thirty participants on

different aspects of pharmacy education. Five nonmember

participants applied for membership on that very day.

AICTE has sanctioned a release of grant under Research

Promotion Scheme (RPS) during the financial year 2012-13to

GNIPST as per the details below:

a. Beneficiary Institution: Guru Nanak Institution of

Pharmaceutical Science & Technology.

b. Principal Investigator: Dr. LopamudraDutta.

c. Grant-in-aid sanctioned:Rs. 16,25000/- only

d. Approved duration: 3 years

e. Title of the project: Screening and identification of potential

medicinal plant of Purulia & Bankura districts of West Bengal

with respect to diseases such as diabetes, rheumatism, Jaundice,

hypertension and developing biotechnological tools for

enhancing bioactive molecules in these plants.
