As the Chair of the PEO Mississauga Chapter for the year 2008-2009, I would like to welcome all the pro- fessional engineers residing in Mississauga. After the AGM in February 2008, I had the first meeting of the chapter with the newly elected board. The board and volunteers have been very busy over the last few months organizing various seminars and programs. All the events below would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of the board members and volunteers. Since February 2008, we have had various types of programs. Our programs catering to school kids were bridge building, the Mathletics competition and sponsoring First Robotics Competition. The bridge building competition was conducted as a joint effort with Brampton chapter (150 students competed) and Mathletics with Scarborough chapter (60 stu- dents participated). We had several seminars with Etobicoke Chapter. The following lectures and semi- nars were a great success: selection of nuclear reactors, a half-day seminar on environmental “global warm- ing”, a Web seminar, a mentees and mentors get together, Licence Certificate presentation ceremony, Wills and Estates, etc. As you see, our team is extremely busy and many volunteers participated, which made the events great successes. I would like to thank our sponsors for this year, who encouraged us whole heartedly: Bantrel, John Crane of Canada, Atomic Energy of Canada, and Meridian Credit Union. Without their assistance, it’s difficult to run seminars. I encourage all the members to talk to their company’s president about assisting our chapter in bringing quality programs to their engineers. My goals for this year are: 1. To continue to work with other chapters in con- ducting tours and seminars; 2. To include more technical-related seminars; 3. To put on a project management seminar for engi- neers and EITs (planned for this fall, members of the organizing team are from major industries and the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers); 4. To work with political parties to ensure they are aware of our association; 5. To encourage school kids to keep up math and science so engineering is an option for them; 6. To encourage women in engineering; 7. To recognize engineers in Mississauga for their ser- vice to the engineering profession; 8. To double our attendees from 1200 to 2400 and to continue to encourage the mentoring program; 9. To have an EIT night; and 10 To include topics on infrastructure, energy supply, manufacturing and innovation. I encourage all of you to attend our seminars and make them a success. Thermal Nuclear TechnologiesThis presentation was delivered by Ralph Hart on February 20, 2008 at Mississauga Central Library. It was well attended and a joint effort between the Mississauga and Etobicoke chapters. Mr. Hart is a consultant and has over 35 years of experience with nuclear facilities.

It was a good presentation on the basics of nuclear power technology and an overview of the currently available nuclear technologies. The audience enjoyed the physics involved in each of the 14 reactors.

The presentation covered the basics of Thermal Reactor Technologies and looked at the basics of such current NPP reac-tor technologies as the Pressurized Water Reactor(PWR),theCANDUReactorandthe Boiling Water Reactor (BWR). Mr. Hart also looked at such reactor technologies as Helium HTGR, Organic WR1 and Molten Salt MSRE.

The topic was very interesting as Ontario is planning to build a new plant in the com-ing years.

Bridge Building ChallengeNational Engineering Week-2008The Mississauga and Brampton chapters of PEO, in collaboration with the PeelDistrictSchoolBoard, organizedPeel’sfirstBridgeBuildingChallenge. The event was held on March 1, 2008. The purpose of this event was to intro-duce the engineering profession to elementary school students and to help the students develop hands-on skills through bridge design and construction. Students in grades 7 and 8 participated in teams, with a maximum of three students each, to design and build a bridge consisting of 100 Popsicle sticks, glue and construction papers. The Bridge Kits, including all required materi-als, design specification, and judging criteria, were provided to students free of charge. Teams of students built their bridges at home.

TheChallengeDaytookplaceatTomkenRoadMiddleSchoolinMississauga.AttheChallengeDay,allbridgeswereinspectedbytwopanelsofjudges (eight in total), and displayed for a photo-op. Then, the bridges were tested to destruction by a testing machine named “Buster”. The top three bridges with the highest score were awarded with gifts and presented with cer-tificates. All other teams were presented with a “Participation Certificate”.

It was a very successful event, attended by about 150 students, their par-ents/guardians, friends, teachers and dignitaries. Free pizza and drinks were provided for lunch. This event required numerous hours of planning, organiz-ing and execution, which would not have been possible without the superb effort and dedication of the Bridge Building Committee from both chapters and the 28 volunteers (engineers, EITs, and teachers). We thank our sponsors: National Engineering Week Ontario Steering Committee, Bantrel Canada, andPeelDistrictSchoolBoard.WearealsogratefultoMPPAmritMangat,John McVey (VP, Bantrel Canada), Rogers TV, Mississauga News and other dignitaries for attending this event. Special thanks to John Ireland, P.Eng., (Thousand Islands Chapter), his wife and “Buster” for their attendance.

The Mathletics ContestThe Mathletics Contest took place on Saturday, March 29, 2008 at Tomken School in Mississauga. Kannada Sangha, of Toronto, organized this event with the help of the Mississauga and Scarborough chapters of PEO. The event involved students from grade 5 to grade 8, who learned that mathematics can be used everywhere from architecture to hydraulics.

Mathletics 2008 was a competition designed to create a passion for applying mathematics in solving day-to-day scientific and engi-neering problems. It challenged students to be active and creative in the use of mathematics.

A total of 60 students participated in an auditorium with guests and parents watching the students. Questions were projected on a screen and the students responded using the remote clickers. Results and answers were displayed on a large screen. Competition was fast paced and students were rewarded for answering faster than their colleagues. Although the questions were hard, this competition gave exposure to the students and removed the fear barrier.

In conclusion, I want to thank the volunteers, Tomken school for providing space and necessary audio and video, and the others who made this competition possible. My special thanks go to Eric Ma of Tomken School, Raju Chander, P.Eng., of Scarborough Chapter and Ramesh Rao and Neil Shankar of Kananda Sangha for making this function successful.

The Tour of the Lakeview Water Treatment PlantThe tour took place on Tuesday, June 10, 2008 at the Lakeview Water Treatment Plant. There were 33 members and guests, plus two board members who participated in this tour.

All the members participating in this tour gathered outside the control building for the water treatment plant. Our tour guides were Jeff Hennings and Erwin Sarmiento, who are the operators for the Lakeview Water Treatment Plant. The tour broke into two groups that toured the new sec-tion of the Lakeview Water Treatment Plant. This section uses current technology for treating the Region of Peel’s water. The current technology includes the use of ozone to kill living organisms and ultra filtration to remove particulate matter from the water.

For our group, the tour began at the reservoir that stores the clean water before it is pumped to the Region of Peel at the high lift pump station. The group made its way to the low lift pump sta-tion that draws water from Lake Ontario. Then, the tour group visited the ozone station, the bio-logical activated carbon station and the filter station, which together clean and purify the lake water before it is pumped to the Region of Peel. The people on the tour had a lot of questions on the water treatment process. Our tour guides answered all the questions.

Developing Your Will and Managing Your EstateOn June 17, 2008, the Mississauga Chapter, along with Toronto-Humber, Etobicoke and North Toronto chapters, co-hosted an information session on wills and estate planning for members at the Noel Ryan Auditorium. The session was well attended with well over 200 people present.

Richard Barrett, Barrister and Solicitor, was the speaker at this event. His presentation explained the purpose of wills and estate planning. According to the Law Society of Upper Canada, 50 per cent of Canadians do not have a will and this is staggering. The majority of Canadians have spouses, chil-dren, pets, assets and liabilities that need care, but even more so if they die.

Mr. Barrett pointed out reasons that people don’t have wills, such as the thought of death itself, which is a grim topic most people want to avoid, and ignorance–people are just not aware of wills, their benefits, and the disadvantages if you don’t have one.

A will is a legal document that you develop with your lawyer. It provides clear instructions on the management of your estate should you die. The will also provides instructions on the care for your children should something happen to you and your spouse. Some other benefits of a will include: it avoids uncertainty while helping to protect your survivors, it provides for the care of your surviving children and the man-agement of your assets until your children reach the age of majority and it provides tax planning opportunities.

If you do not have a will, the disadvantages are: the Succession Law Reform Act spells out a series of “if then” state-ments, the results of which may not be what you want, your family faces costly legal proceedings and delayed settlements, and in common-law relationships, your common-law spouse may not inherit your estate like a married spouse.

There were other points that Mr. Barrett touched on. For instance, the starting cost for a lawyer to develop a will is $300.Youneedanexecutortoadministeryourestate.Thecourts allow 5 per cent of your remaining assets as payment to the executor. Also, a will is a living document, and it should capture life changes (marriage, divorce, children, etc). Self kits are better than nothing, but if you are not a lawyer, getting the legalese wrong could be detrimental to your fam-ily by leaving things open to interpretation in a way that may not favour your family in the courts—when you won’t be available to clarify the ambiguity.

To summarize, a lawyer-prepared will is a small price to pay for its many benefits and security to your family and estate. Keep in mind that where there is a will, there is a clear way!

Solar Power is an alternative energy source to fossil fuels. The solar cell or the photovoltaic cell is one means of converting sunlight into electric-ity. The work done by scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs has over the years brought the price of solar cells down and improved the cell conver-sion efficiency. Still, electricity generated by solar cells is expensive. The conversion efficiency of sunlight to electricity for silicon photovoltaic cells is in the range of 14 to 19 per cent and the cost of electricity is $0.60/kilowatt-hour.

Come and hear Dr. Josef Czaban’s talk about the research work going on at McMaster University to improve the efficiency of solar cells and reduce their cost. Dr.Czaban’s presentation will cover the following:

• conventionalsolarcellsandtheirlimitations;

Class Room #3, The Mississauga Central Library 301 Burnhamthorpe Road West, Mississauga

Speaker: Dr. Bryan Karney, P.Eng., Chair of the Division of Environmental Engineering and Energy Systems at the University of Toronto

When we talk about energy for generating electricity, the focus is on energy sources, such as fossil fuels, nuclear or solar. Yet we forget about energy storage technology, such as pump storage and chemical batteries. The commercial success of non-fossil fuel energy sources, such as wind and solar, will require this technology.

Dr. Bryan Karney will give an overview of the present state of energy storage technology. The pre-sentation will cover the range of energy storage technologies, including pump storage, the use of compressed air, chemical batteries and super flywheels. It will also look at the present state of the technologies, the strengths and weakness of each type of technology, and the future of energy stor-age technology.

Refreshments will be provided.

Wind power is an important renewable energy source that will provide many new benefits for the people of our province and reduce impact on Ontario’s natural environment. Recently, Ontario opened a window for applications for wind power development on crown land. Wind power devel-opment on crown land will play a key role in helping the Ontario government meet its goal of dou-bling Ontario’s renewable energy supply to 15,700 MW by 2025.

Building strong relationships between professional experts has been an important practice for the Ministry of Natural Resources for many years. As the ministry strives to meet new sustainability goals in view of retaining important infrastructure (dams, flooding, watershed and timber management), consultation with experts such as professional engineers will help develop policy and initiatives that will benefit all Ontarians and our natural environment.

All members can bring a guest.
