Using drama games, students will work on and try out new strategies for building resilience.

Music The song ‘I’ll make a man out of you’ from the movie Mulan shows Mulan

History When we talk about strong people, we normally think of them being able to lift heavy objects. People can also be strong by overcoming challenges and showing

Example game - Students take turns riding in an imaginary car. Anyone already in the car instantly takes on the mood and emotions of the new person joining the car. Each new person adds a totally different mood to the car - laughter, excitement, confusion, etc. Students will work in groups to create a short drama performance showing how students can overcome challenges and problems that they face in school. Students will write and perform their performances as well as self-evaluate their work with their group.

overcoming challenges put to her by Captain Shang. Watch the video and answer the following questions www.viewpure.com/mepsmulan

1. What challenges must Mulan overcome?

2. Captain Shang changes what he sings from: “Mister, I'll make a man out of you" to "Somehow, I'll make a man out of you" and then "How could I make a man out of you”.

3. Does he think that his soldiers are getting stronger or weaker? What lyrics tell you this?

4. Why does the crowd start to sing towards the end of the song?

resilience in tough situations. Research one of the following people

● Helen Keller (author) ● Lionel Messi (football player) ● Albert Einstein (physicist) ● Bethany Hamilton (surfer) ● Richard Branson (business owner) ● Vincent Van Gough (painter)

Answer the following questions 1. What challenges have they had to face in their life? 2. What did they do to overcome these challenges? You have two days to do this. You can split it up by doing your research and taking notes on Thursday, and on Friday answering the questions.

Financial Literacy Project Week 4 MEPS Weather Reporters!

You have been allocated the task of being the MEPS Weather Reporter. This job is very important indeed, as you need to report on the weather for the week, for those who are not able to go outside. We will also rely on you to make some predictions on the probability of the weather (rain, sun, wind, snow etc) for the week, so our teachers and students will know what to wear to school on their learning day. To complete the mission, you will need to complete the following tasks:

❏ Task 1 (At school) Class discussion on what is probability? Create a probability line with words you can use to describe the likelihood of an event occuring. Create a wall chart to display. ❏ Task 2 (At school)

In pairs, use the wall chart as a guide to create a list of events that are certain, likely, even chance, unlikely and impossible to occur. Discuss the weather conditions of the past week.

❏ Use: Bureau of Meteorology: http://www.bom.gov.au/ to examine the weather for last week in Merrylands. Use probability language to create sentences about the weather of each day. For example: On Friday the 8th of May, it was unlikely to rain. We had clear skies with no clouds, which meant it was likely to remain sunny. There was an even chance of afternoon rain.

❏ Task 3 Look at the ‘Likelihood of Events’ template attached. Think about the different events and order them from impossible to certain, then answer the questions. Once you have done this, look at the ‘Weather Report’ template and have a go at creating some probability sentences to match each picture. Use the probability line from Task 1 to help you with probability language. ❏ Task 4

Conduct a die toss experiment to tally the chance and probability of each number of the die being rolled. Use the template attached ‘Die Toss Experiment’ to record your results. When you have finished, write 5 facts about what you have learnt about the probability of rolling a die.

❏ Use this link to roll the interactive die: https://www.online-stopwatch.com/chance-games/roll-a-dice/full-screen/ ❏ Task 5

Using the knowledge you have gained from tasks 1-4 about probability and chance, create a weather report based on today’s weather. You will need to create a script that you will read off that is 1-2 minutes long. Make sure to include the likelihood of the weather forecast, e.g. today will most likely be raining or there is an even chance of it being sunny. Create a nice weather background or supporting pictures (sun, wind, rain) and send your weather forecast recording to your teacher on SeeSaw.

Likelihood of Events Order the following events according to the probability of them occurring.

Event (Not in correct order)

Event (Rewrite the events in the correct order from impossible/least likely → most likely/certain)

Likelihood of occurrence (What are the chances of these events

happening?)

I will go to the shops today.

I will eat lunch today.

It will rain tonight.

I will be on SeeSaw today.

The sky is going to turn green.

I will go to the zoo tomorrow.

The sun will be purple.

My dinner will include some type of vegetable.

I will have a piece of fruit today.

Create an event of your own that will match the following probabilities:

Impossible Unlikely Even Chance Likely Certain

Weather Report Using your notes and knowledge from Task 2 where we looked at the Bureau of Meteorology website. Look at the below images and come up with a short weather report you could use if you were going to present the weather on television. An example is provided below.

Wind

Today, we will most likely experience thunderstorms in Merrylands. There is an even chance of rain, so don’t forget your umbrellas and raincoats. By looking at the cloudy overcast, it is unlikely to be sunny.

Die Toss Experiment Roll the die 20 times using the link in Task 4. Each time you roll the die, put a tally mark next the number it landed on.

Write a few facts about what conclusions you made from this die toss experiment.

(Which number did you land on the most? Which number did you land on the least? Will this remain the same each time you do the experiment? If you have time, repeat the experiment again and see if you get different results.)
