Strength Through Growth Greetings to all Lions, Lionesses and Leos in our great 201 V6 “Pride” from wherever Lions Lady Mary and I are at the time you are reading this. Six months of the year already gone and we have had the uplifting experience of visiting 52 clubs (at the time of writing) and meeting many dedicated Lions and partners doing marvelous, and widely various, work in our communities. We have been humbled by the generous reception we have received at each visit and thank those clubs for their hospitality and friendship. We are looking forward with anticipation to visiting and meeting even more Lions in the coming months as we continue our tour of the District. During my address to clubs, I have mentioned International President Joe Preston’s theme, “Strengthen the Pride” and the song that he wrote inspiring members to join with him in growing Lions membership and growing our pride in our organization. I encourage you all to visit the LCI website, www. lionsclubs.org and search for “President’s theme”, watch the video, then download and listen to the song. I’m sure you will find it interesting and fun. Zone Chairman, Des Jones, did and he thought the Chinese version was the best!! While on the website, I further encourage you to look around, particularly in the Membership area, and see the wonderful projects and training that are available to members and clubs which will enhance your Lions experience and further equip you to better serve your communities. On the membership front, 201 V6 is currently showing a net loss of two members, 49 new members and 51 dropped members. Please keep up the commitment to introducing new members to our organization and, at the same time, helping and encouraging those members who are having trouble participating in club activities and our service work. We now have a very good and well trained group of Guiding Lions who are only too willing to attend clubs to help you rejuvenate member’s enthusiasm and get your club moving forward. All that is needed is for clubs to ask for assistance. As I say in my address to clubs, District Cabinet Officers are there to serve you, the clubs and members of 201 V6, and to assist you to be the very best you can be. Merry Christmas to All

District Governor’s message cont.On the matter of recording new members, you will see from the list of new members printed in this edition, the names of some sponsors are missing. It is most important that member’s efforts in introducing new members be recognized and I ask Club Secretaries to ensure that sponsor’s names are recorded when advising of new member inductions. These sponsors will be eligible for Key Member Awards sent out my LCI when the new member remains a Lion for twelve months and it would be a shame if eligible Lions missed out. Grocery VoucherBenalla resident Helena Szabo won the raffle for Benalla Lions Club grocery voucher. This was kindly sponsored by Woolworths Benalla. This event raises money for the Cord Blood Foundation, which supplies the Bone Marrow Donor Institute in Melbourne with funding for the storage of cord blood units collected from the umbilical cords of newborns. Back in June this year, Benalla Lions Club was offered tables and chairs from a Primary School, whichlonger required due to combining schools in our town. After communicating with PDG Bill and PDG Bea Ahearn it was established that there was a need in PNG where they would be put to good use. PDG Bill is the current Membership Development Committee Chairman for PNG.After “some months” of negotiations with Linfox in West Melbourne they accepted to ship our tables (64) and chairs (147) toof charge. After further negotiations with a Lions Club Members former employer – Stolz Homemakers, the owner loaned us his furniture truck (no charge) to take the tables and chairs together with four cartons of clothing to the Linfox Depot at 672 Footscray road West Melbourne. All this was made possible by Lou Tardio from Linfox, who requested a letter from PDG Bill to confirm where these items were being sent to and that they would be used at schools and orphanages around, where a lot of these places do not have desks and chairs for students to sit at.Our Club is extremely grateful to Lou Tardio, Account Manager and Jan Clark, National Administration Manager both from Linfox Australia Pty. Ltd, and Lawrence Stolz, owner of Stolz Homemakers in Benallatheir generosity in providing to do this transportation free of charge to our Club.No doubt these items will put smiles on the faces of children in PNG and it will certainly make their time in school more comfortable.the gracious help of others we were able to uphold our Motto in.

Lennie, the Friendly Lion from the Friendly Lions Club of Friendly, West Virginia, USA is excited about our Club being involved with an LCI Club Twinning project with your Beechworth Lions Club. We are a small Club of 18 members located along the Ohio River between Wheeling and Parkersburg, WV in north western West Virginia. Our service area includes the Friendly community (pop 150) and the majority of Tyler County (pop 9,000).Our main fundraising project is Bingo every summer during County Fair week. Just this summer alone, Bingo has provided our Club with nearly $5,000 (US) towards providing needed service to not only our local area, but to Lions Charities internationally and within the State of West Virginia. We want to thank President Josie and our Club secretary Dan Heintzman in their efforts to establish this relationship between our two Clubs. Thanks to the magic of Facebook and the internet, our distance does not seem like halfway around the world, but more like halfway down the street. Thank you for allowing us to be a small part of your Club and help both Clubs live up to our motto "We Serve."

Lion John Loader highlighting the wonderful Hearing Dogs project and after screening a short video that explained the benefits for Hearing Dogs to people in our communities he had a good number of questions from Corowa Lions. John and Sue travelled from Melbourne to be present at our last Dinner meeting.

Lion Sue Loader explaining to Corowa Lions the history of the Lions Christmas Cakes project and the great benefits that supporting this wonderful project has bought about. Since the Lions Cakes project was introduced it has raised over $52,000.000.000 most of this money goes to sight projects.

Corowa Lions Club replaces Tourist information signsAfter a comment made by Motelier, Kelly Ralph from the Wingrove Motel some four years ago regarding the dilapidated state of the Service Club signs on the approaches to Corowa. Lion Lynn Fredericks asked the Lions Club of Corowa if they would consider replacing these signs as a Lions community project which bought about what we have today. Now after much work by dedicated Lions and other community organisations the signs have now become a reality. The Lions Club of Corowa is very proud of what has been achieved. Thanks go to Sheldon Ralph for his sign work, much of which he donated. Thank also go to Lions Andrew Johns and Barry Barker for their efforts and BPR Engineering for allowing Lions to use their workshop for the construction process and to Corowa Rotary, Apex, Leos and other community groups for their cooperation.Corowa Lions PresidentLynn Fredericks

Members boarded a bus bound for Boort, there were several stops organised for the day which was to be the club “Christmas Adventure”. Our first stop was at “SIMPLY TOMATOES & AUSSIE WOOL QUILTS” we were warmly welcomed and taken on a tour of the farm manufacturing operations, followed by a unique picnic box of tasty treats for morning tea. Throughout the morning, information was shared about the farm, the district and the progressive story and the journey of their national award winning products, recognized by the Premier of Victoria for Innovation. Our next stop was at SALUTE OLIVA, is run by Swiss couple, Peter & Marlies Eicher, which translates to “Cheers to good health with Olives”. Salute Oliva is situated on the eastern edge of Boort. This family owned grove produces first class extra virgin olive oil and a range of table olives. Grown organically, the olives are processed using only natural ingredients with traditional pickling methods. The oil and the olives are available for sale in various package sizes. Also sold on site are jams, preserves, olive oil soaps and gift packs. Lunch was our next stop and that was at the Railway Hotel, where our hosts had opened just for us, a beautiful two course meal was presented and enjoyed by all.Our next stop was the reason for the trip, “The Spanner Man”, John Piccoli. As soon as you turn into the driveway of the Piccoli property, just outside of Boort in northwest Victoria, you get a feeling that there is something a little bit different about this farm.Dotted along the gravel driveway are dozens of early farm machinery, standing proudly on display next to

signs that outline the machine’s function and the year it would have been used.Eventually this charming little drive leads you to two pillars that stand guard against a luscious green lawn and vibrant flower beds. It’s certainly a welcome sight to the surrounding crops that dominate the Mallee district – a kind of private oasis. These gardens form the perfect backdrop to the heroes of the farm: a collection of towering metal sculptures. To the left, a draft horse pulls an old wagon and a buckjumper grips the reins next to two fighting stallions. To the right, a shearer bends over a silver fleece, while behind him a giant marlin heaves against a fishing line. Further along, a mermaid gracefully guards the entrance to the century-old farmhouse.John makes the sculptures by welding together antique through to modern day spanners. The tallest sculpture, “ The Marlin”, is over seven metres tall, weighs 1200 kgs and is made from 3500 spanners. What is perhaps the most amazing thing about John is that he does all of this from a rugged motorised wheelchair. It has been his mode of transportation since contracting polio at the age of eight, (John is now 72), which left him without the use of his legs. This was an amazing day, wandering around the extensive gardens, which are also home to a menagerie of cattle, deer, goats, ostriches, camels, pheasants, peacocks, Guinea fowl, finches, various breeds of ducks and two pairs of Macaws.A truly inspirational man.

Each year, to honour one of our Charter members, Dr Peter Graham, two scholarships are presented in his name,at Cohuna Consolidated School and St Mary’s Primary School. The award is presented to a member of the school who has demonstrated Leadership, encouraged others to do their best and to support the school community. This year at St Mary’s two proud Lions, Peter & PDG Christine Coleston watched as their granddaughter, Tilly, was presented with the award.Congratulations Tilly.

Corryong Lions Club had the pleasure of meeting up with Merv and Margaret Kroll of Morayfield Lions Club.Merv and Margaret travelling in a T model Ford rolled into Corryong after a long and challenging slog across Australia. They are traversing the country for a good cause and will have travelled about 15,000 kilometres by the end of the trip.

They are raising money for Angel Flight, which gives free non-emergency flights to country people who have bad health. The Corryong community and surrounding areas rely on Angel Flight in an emergency, therefore the Corryong Lions Club fully support this volunteer service thru donations.

Corryong Lions President Lorraine Griffiths, presents the Club banner to a representative of the Sri Chinmoy Oneness-Home Peace Run.In 2014 the Peace Run has travelled from Uluru, the heart of Australia to the Capital City Canberra in a symbolic journey through October to November.Lighting the torch at the very heart of the continent, the flame then traveled south through the Flinders Ranges to Adelaide then followed the length of the mighty Murray River from its mouth to its source and ascend Mt Kosciuszko before concluding in Canberra. Each step the Torch is carried and powered by the goodwill and support of everyone along the way, the Corryong Lions Club added its hopes and dreams for a better and brighter world.

Whilst visiting, DG Peter installed our newest member - Maree.

For a small club, working hard to keep on providing for their community, inducting three new members on November 24 was a great effort.Zone Chairman Graeme Falconer, was very pleased to have the duty as the Inducting Officer, with Club President Paul Ryan as their sponsor. The new member are Allen Peirce, Ray Bright and Marcus Miller. Apart from the usual roster of duties we carry out for our major fundraiser , our contract with the Shire. Things have been a little quiet, probably a “breather” before the very busy holiday season. Our recent donations have included an amount of $1,895 to the Lake Charm Primary School for the purchase of a defibrillator, along with a Lion’s cake to include in their annual raffle of a Christmas hamper. We are currently calling for nominations for our Australia Day award which is presented at our annual Australia Day breakfast on the western shores of Kangaroo Lake at Gorton Point.President Brian made a small presentation to Gary & Barb Skinner of the Mystic Park Hotel at ourNovember dinner meeting, which was to be their last as our hosts, we have appreciated their hospitality and wished them both well in their future ventures. On behalf of all our club members and partners I would like to wish everyone a happy and safe Christmas and a healthy, peaceful New Year.Ruth Stirling

Moama Anglican Grammar School’s Daniel Van Tubbergh is Moama Lions Club’s Youth of the Year. The Year 11 student took out the title from two fellow students and three from St Joseph’s College at Moama RSL Club on Tuesday.‘‘It was a shock. All of the other contestants were really deserving of the win,’’ a modest Daniel said. ‘‘It’s definitely something good to put on the resume. ‘‘It’s (Lions Club Youth of the Year Quest) recognised across Australia and I think getting involved in a community club is a good thing.’’Students were interviewed by a panel before the public speaking stage, which involved two impromptu questions: ‘Is the community doing enough to stop illicit drug use?’ and ‘Following the death of a local water ski racer, is it too dangerous to participate in high-risk sports?’.‘‘I thought we were doing enough (to help stop drug use) . . . but it’s hard to gauge without statistics on hand,’’ Daniel said. ‘‘However, it’s up to the individual to take a stand and say drugs should not be accepted in our community. ‘‘Death (of a local) brings about huge sadness because we are such a small, close-knit community. ‘‘All sports are dangerous. The day of the competition was when (Test cricketer) Phil Hughes was (fatally) injured. ‘‘Cricket is a seemingly safe sport, but you can still lose your life playing it.’’Daniel, who moved to Australia from South Africa six years ago, also impressed judges with his prepared speech on refugees. ‘‘We need to have a more broad view on refugees. If all displaced people went through the UN Refugee Program, they would have a one-in 333 chance of being resettled,’’ he said.‘‘If the whole community of Echuca-Moama were to be refugees, only 60 a year would be accepted to any country.’’ St Joseph’s College student Kyle Hunter won the public speaking award, while the other contestants were Olivia Boylan, Aiden Pangrazio and Chelsea Sutton. The judges said standards were high, while organiser Betty Muus said all contestants could sign on again next November and would have the benefit from the experience gained from this year.Daniel will now compete in the regional final to be held in Nathalia early next year. Our thanks go to Betty Muus for again organising this event, you did a great job!

Bubble Ball in Shepparton.A group of Members from Nathalia Lions Club travelled by mini bus to Shepparton where they took part in a fun social night (playing soccer whilst enclosed in a big bubble ball).Whilst it was an activity that not every one could participate in for various reasons, we made it a family night by including our families in the activity.

Some members had several turns playing the Bubble Ball soccer, others decided after one or two goes that it was a bit too much for them, so decided to watch and laugh at the fun from the sidelines

Afterwards we had supper at a local pizza restaurant before stopping off McDonalds for an ice cream cone on the way home. One member described the night "was the best social night we have had for years".

The Spelling Bee was once again very successful, and a special thank you to Lion Elena for organising the event, along with the many Lions members who assisted with the evening, and the lead up to it. A new format was trailed, with a terrific result. Many thanks to Lion Keith, and his good wife, Mary, for the new format.Once again members will be working at Carols by Candlelight on Tuesday 16 December, providing a BBQ, and assisting with distributing Santa’s lollies. The Club is looking forward to the 2014-15 District Governor Peter Niall and his wife, Mary, visiting us at the December Dinner Meeting, along with Zone Chairman Darren Murphy.

The main highlights for the Club this year have been the 50th Anniversary Celebration in March, and the Club being awarded the prestigious award for The Best Lions Club in the Zone. A special mention for Lion Bill Griffith on his collection of badges for his Charter Membership, achievement of his 50th anniversary in Lions, along with his life member badge.A Happy and healthy Christmas and New Year to all, looking forward to 2015.

On Saturday November 22nd, Benalla Leos conducted a ‘Trivia Night’ to raise funds to assist the Lions Club purchase a ‘Heart Defibrillator’. Approximately 40 people attended and enjoyed a fun night as the Leos enthusiastically went about extracting every dollar possible. They also conducted a silent auction

of items donated by twenty Benalla businesses. The end result was a profit of $860 towards their goal.

Everyone who attended, were impressed by their organisation, enthusiasm and energy.Benalla Leos have been very busy, also taking part in the Car Boot Sale with plants and lots of goodies for sale. The Benalla Leos are yet to Charter, if the enthusiasm they have shown over the past few months, in promoting their club and raising funds for their community is any indication of the way they go about a project, they are going to be a fantastic asset to the Benalla Lions Club and to their community.

The ongoing maintenance and the redevelopment of the Cohuna Retirement Village - Youth Garden continues. A working bee was held with members of the public keen to come along and help the Leos remove the old shade are. This was great, with the extra help we jot so much more done. Two residents from the Village, Mrs Searl and Tony were on hand to make sure we did it right. Leo Cub mascot, Mikayla, also came along to help.Fundraising for the Garden has been through monthly car washes and the raffle of our “Caravan Cubby”. With the funds raised, the new raised, wheelchair friendly garden beds will be made. This will be a joint project with the Cohuna Men’s Shed and the Leos. The fernery will be replaced with new powder coated lattice and shade cloth. Still lots to do but looking good.

We are very lucky to have the support of the Cohuna CFA with the use of their track and equipment to carry out our Car wash days. This makes the work so much easier, and there is a bit of fun too. The local Police vehicle gets the once over by the Leos. Lots of local support.Gunbower Races gave the Leos an opportunity to promote their raffle, “Caravan Cubby House” to a new audience, and talk to people there about Leos. Great day.

Leo President Tony & State Youth of the Year winner Ashleigh Rogers travelled to Cambodia with the Rotary “Alternate Schoolies” week. The house in the background is one of several build by the group, while in Cambodia, they also visited schools and orphanages and distributed toys and sporting equipment.Truly making a difference in the lives of others less fortunate.

Carols in the Park were almost washed out this year, but the rain held off long enough for all the little ones to have some fun blowing bubbles, playing games and singing with the Leo Elves.Even Santa got a bit of a hand from Leo Elves “Jingles” & ‘Jangles”, but they were just after his ride.

Bound for Gallipoli. It’s not every day a 13 year old student takes the day off school to visit Parliament House and make a speech in front of the Victorian Premier, network TV, and more than 300 people But that is exactly how Rochester Secondary College student, and member of the Rochester Leo Club, Annette Waters spent Wednesday 10th September. Annette spoke on behalf of the 80 students selected to represent Victoria in Turkey next year to commemorate 100 years since the ANZAC’s landed at Gallipoli.Annette entered a competition on ANZAC Day, through the Herald Sun newspaper. It was some time before Annette herd that she had been selected. Annette says that this is going to be a trip of a lifetime as this will be her first plain trip and first time over seas. Annette was very proud to be presented with the "Spirit of Anzac" award by the Rochester RSL this year. The award was in recognition of "community work, selflessness and achievements which reflect the Anzac spirit”. Annette feels that her involvement with the Leo Club at Rochester contributed to her being presented with this award.

A No Smoking, No Drugs & No Alcohol EventPut these dates in your iPhone, diary or whatever it takes to remind you, 27th to 29th March 2015 is the 1st V6 Leo Convention, to be held at the Corowa Rugby League Club rooms (near the airport). The idea of the Convention is to get as many Leos from around the V6 District together to meet each other and have some fun! Early Bird registration of $50 if booked by the 1st March 2015. Remember, a separate registration form will be needed for each person attending, even if only for one or two social functions or meals. This helps with catering. All meals are included with the full weekend booking, if your family want to attend for only a few activities or sessions, they can book just for that. The registration form will be finalised soon and out to all clubs. Limited numbers, so book early.Accommodation is “Camp” style. Bring along your tent, swag or sleeping bag and grab a spot on the oval, a few changes of clothes might be handy. There are heaps of motels, cabins etc. in town if your family is coming along or if anyone would rather have comfort. The program for the weekend includes some formal stuff, like the opening ceremony but it also includes lots of fun stuff. Starting with a ‘Campfire’ tea on Friday night, Leo Clubs are asked to provide some entertainment. Do you have anyone in your club who can sing, dance, put on a funny skit? Saturday will include the opening including the flag raising ceremony. Leo clubs are asked to bring along a banner, flag or sign that describes your club. One Leo from each club will bring this in following the flag raising ceremony. This might include photos of your activities, members or anything you like. There will be some great speakers who are there to motivate and encourage you, not bore you to tears. On Saturday night, following a Spit Roast Tea, there will be a live band with great music and dancing till midnight. Dress to impress in the theme - 1920’s. Lots of scope for costumes there from Bonny & Clyde to Al Capone...Sunday there will be the awarding of some prizes, the nomination of the club to host the V6 2016 Leo Convention. Leo Clubs are asked to nominate if they would like to host the next convention, tell everyone what ideas your club has to entertain everyone. During Sunday the “Hunger Games” Race will be held. This will be an opportunity to get rid of some built up energy, throwing flower bombs, paint bombs, using water cannons all while racing a bottomless Car/Boat. But you have to build your own. All Leos are asked to bring along items to help make a

car/boat; string, paper, cardboard, cardboard tube, fabric, sticky tape, zippy ties, face paint and paint for the boat.“Hunger Games” style, all items will be put into a pile in the middle; members from each team will have to race to grab items to make their car/boat. Bring along a white T-shirt to decorate in your team colours.Come along, meet other Leos, make new friends and learn about what other Leo Clubs are doing,

Most of all, come along to have fun!

November 2014 UpdateChairman’s CommentsOn behalf of the Board of Directors, I’d like to extend a very special thank you to each and every one of you who contributed to making Houses 15 and 16 - our Special Needs accommodation units –a reality. The project proved to be a marathon time wise, but the results are something we all should be very proud of, and it will be a wonderful resource for many years to come. An especial thank you is due to CEO Adam, who managed the project on the ground, requiring many hours of his time, researching and following through the special requirements so that the needs of our Special Needs clients will be met. Camp 276: Mon 19th – Friday 23rd January 2015 It’s not long now until schools finish for the year so if you have not already done so please get your applications processed, checked and despatched. All information and the Club Application Form can be found on our website www.licola.org.au – Lions drop down menu – Lions Sponsored Camps. Please ensure that the forms are completed correctly, and all sections are completed, before they are returned to Noelene Birnie P.O.Box 560 Drouin Vic 3818. Any errors could delay processing your applications. Lions Sponsored Camps for 2015 Please note that the new Club application forms for the 2015 camps are on the website. It was four years in the making, and involved lots of volunteers. Those who have already seen the completed

project agree that this is a really special addition to our camp.Licola Open Day- 1 November 2015 What a contrast to the opening

day for houses 15 and 16, it was cold and wet early on but by late morning the sun was out and the weather was really good. There was a lot of activity around the Giant Swings, the Flying Fox, the archery targets and even on the water with canoeing. Unfortunately visitor numbers were down because of the weather but the houses were booked out and these visitors had a great time. One of the highlights on the day was the CFA presence and their interaction with the younger children, letting them put out the “Burning House”. Once again the planning for the Open Day was fantastic. Convention Guest Speaker for 201V5

201V5 DG Alan Fluck with Adam Wake and PDG Noreen Carr after Adam’s Licola presentation. C.E.O. Adam made his convention guest speaker debut at the V5 convention this year and gave an informative and exciting presentation

about Licola - Past, Present & Future. Of special interest was the information relating to Licola’s new project Youth@Risk. He gave an overview of the aims of the project, an outline of how the project will be run and the ages of the Youths that will be involved. Adam will also be a guest speaker at the V2 convention. All donations to Youth@Risk over $2.00 are tax deductable and cheques should be made payable to Lions Village Licola Inc. with an instruction that the money is designated for Youth@Risk. Lions Sponsored Camp Leaders – we need your help Once again with the Summer LSC’s upon us there is always a need for camps leaders, both old and new. Often we rely on our older leaders to fill these positions but the fact is they are also getting older and are not able to do what they “used to do”. We need all Lions to seek out potential leaders and for those Clubs that are able to sponsor multiple children to also provide a leader for their camp. When a camp is at risk of cancellation it is most often due to a lack of leaders rather than a lack of children. Please contact the Licola office if you can help AND NOTE THAT VOLUNTEER FORMS ARE ON THE WEBSITE UNDER “Volunteers”. Youth at Risk Camps – Progress report. Last month we advised that we would provide an updated total of how our donations are progressing. As at 25/10/14 the total is $13,000.00 with future promises of more Our most sincere thanks to all the Lions who have supported Youth@Risk to date, but please don’t stop now.

Licola December 2014 Update

Chairman’s Report

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to our team at Licola, and to all Lions, Lionesses and volunteers who have contributed to our Camp this year. It’s a great project, one we should all be proud of!

“The race was tough... in fact I found it very tough, but that's not to say I didn't enjoy it. The volunteers were absolutely awesome. At times I did think about the Youth @ Risk program in an effort to find inspiration to push through some of the darker moments of the event. These were mostly confined to the 42km marathon stage which, I guess, is not surprising after 3.8km in the water and 180km on the bike. Strangely, I found that running with my eyes closed actually helped me drift away and not think about the discomfort or the distance still ahead. Again seeing all shapes, sizes, and ages in this, what I once thought, an impossible event proves that people are capable of much, much more than they ever realise. I've often said that we should all do things that are scary as often as we can and even sign up for things that we may think at the time are beyond our reach - I think it is nice when you find that they are not.”

We are happy to tell you that Adam is back at Licola, a bit stiff and sore but excited. If you would like to make a donation to support his efforts please send your cheque Lions Village Licola Jamieson Road Licola 3858 and indicate that it is for Youth @Risk. More photo’s next month. As at 26/11/14the total was $15000.00. FantasticOur most sincere thanks to all the Lions who have supported Youth@Risk to date, but please don’t stop now.
