Dighton Elementary Home & school connection December 2014 Merry Christmas! It’s hard to believe that the 1st semester is coming to a close and Christmas is only a few days away. The elves have returned to school to keep an eye on everyone and to report back to San- ta as to who has been naughty and who has been nice. Most everyone is on the nice list. Let’s hope it stays that way! This last week before vacation will be filled with final tests to be put in the grade book, Christmas parties and lots of other fun activities. Over the past several weeks, several MTSS groups have been working on plays and Readers Theatres that they are ready to perform. On Thursday, Decem- ber 18, two 3rd and 4th grade groups will perform as well as first and second grade beginning at 9:45 am. A group of 5th and 6th graders will perform “Christmas at the OK Corral” and a group of 3rd and 4th graders will perform at 10 am. All performances will be held in the DES gym. We invite you to come and see their many talents. Check with your child/children to see if they will be perform- ing as not all children will participate. As our students enjoy many activities this holiday season we also want them to remember those less fortunate than themselves. Our theme, “Light of the World” is reflected in our tree and the en- trance to the school. Students will participate in our annual door tour and puzzle activity on Friday, December 19th. We are asking for them to bring an item for the Lane County Food Bank or 25¢ as an entry ticket to the activities. If you are unable to provide an item or simply forget, teachers have items to provide for those students. Suggested items are as follows: Canned fruit Macaroni and cheese dinners Vienna sausages Boxed potatoes Pork & Beans Canned potatoes Spaghetti sauce Canned tuna, chicken, ham Cereals Rice, beans, pasta Canned meals: Spaghettios, Ravioli Canned vegetables Thank you once again for supporting our activities and we hope to see you on Thursday or Friday. 2015 Kansas history day

The Lane County Historical Society will host a Kansas History Day for all students on Thursday, January 8. This years’ famous Kansan will be Charles Jesse Jones, better known as Buffalo Jones. Johnetta Hebrlee, Education Coor-dinator/Store Manager at the Finney County Historical Society Museum, will present the program on Buffalo Jones’ life which will include original footage of him in action. Jones, along with John A. Stevens and the brothers William D. and James R. Fulton, founded Garden City in 1879. He was an American frontiers-man, farmer, rancher, hunter and conservationist who has been cited by the National Archives as one of the “preservers of the American bison”. Buffalo Jones died in 1917 and is buried at Valley View Cemetery next to his wife and sons in Garden City. In 1979, a permanent exhibit was dedicated to his memory in the Finney County Historical Museum. A statue of Jones can be found at the Finney County Courthouse and Buffalo Jones Elementary School in Garden City bears his name. The Historical Society is pleased to bring Ms. Hebrlee to our district and to share a bit of Kansas history with our students.

When to Call the Doctor

As a parent it is sometimes difficult to know when you need to call the doctor or get help right away.

Here are some of those times:

Your child has trouble breathing.

Bleeding that will not stop.

Any injury that you think can lead to your child’s death.

Blood in your child’s urine or bowel movements.

Coughing up or throwing up blood.

Diarrhea and no urine for 6 hours.

The soft spot on your baby’s head is bulging or sunken.

Pain in the ear or liquid, pus or blood coming out of your child’s ear.

Your child has a hard time swallowing or won’t eat.

Your child has both a fever and a stiff neck.

Fever of 102 degrees if your child is over 6 months of age.

This is a short list of when to call the doctor or get help. There are other reasons to call your doctor.

Stocking Stuffers

Thank you for filling our stockings! Each time you send

Box Tops and register tapes from K&J Foods to school

you are filling our stockings. We so appreciate every-

one that takes the time to clip those Box Tops and

those who shop at K&J Foods which helps our commu-

nity thrive. These are two of the easiest fund raisers out

there.

What seems like just pieces of

paper to many, is actually money

and supplies in our schools pocket.

Thank you for filling our stockings

year round.

The Books Are Here!

The SunnyD Book Spree ended Novem-ber 30th and books are starting to arrive. Thank you everyone who saved Sunny D labels and sent them to school. Classrooms that collected 20 labels and sent them in are now receiving 20 books for their classroom. These are current, popular Scholastic paper-back books that are age appropriate for each classroom. We are DELIGHTED!

Construction Zone

The school is under construction. Crews are on

site and making changes every day inside and

out. The rest of the year will be a time of flexibil-

ity and adaptations. Faculty, staff and students

are rolling with the flow and are excited about

the changes ahead. Please bear with us as we

work through this process.
