Hello Dubbers

Another year over, Christmas time again, by the time you read this the club Christmas party will be over and our one off ‘Day of the Volkswagen’ banner will have been auctioned off (with the proceeds going to charity). For all those that couldn’t make the Christmas party, on behalf of all the committee, I wish you and your families a merry Christmas and a safe and happy new year. I hope to catch up with many of you at our first meeting of the year in January (our annual Pizza night at the Pirates Tavern in Williamstown - date to be confirmed, stay tuned on Facebook and email for full details). The committee and I look forward to organising not only our regular events for the upcoming year but also some one off events and hopefully a few joint events with the other Victorian VW clubs.

As l hit the keyboard again and watch the sun go down on another Day of the Volkswagen, there is a certain feeling of mission complete as one of the many volunteers to deliver the members and visitors to Yarra Glen Racecourse another great VWCV event. The Bay Window Kombi (1968-1979) was a great Volkswagen tribute to an very easily recognised icon of our motoring club.

DAY OF THE VOLKSWAGEN 2019 Chris Scane with Lyn and Lloyd Davies.

Lloyd would like to deeply thank all the volunteers that assisted in any capacity and acknowledge their contribution to the success of the day. We were trying to embrace air-cooled and water-cooled Volkswagens into the show and this year triumphs that success! This year’s event was incredibly successful on many different levels and even no major complaints! Special thanks also goes to Emma from Yarra Glen Racecourse who worked hard to accommodate our special needs and the Penrose gang from the Shoalhaven VW Club who brought down eight vehicles to compliment the local cars. Lyn would like to thank the members of both judging teams, those who assisted in recording the results and marshalling vehicles, and other volunteers who assisted on the day and made the completion of the results (tabled here) possible. This vital task was executed with professionalism and good spirit that hopefully made the experience an enjoyable one for all. We are glad to get some good feedback on a very enjoyable show and look forward to 2020!

As one of the many VWCV warhorses that come back every year and together with the new volunteers, we put together a might good car show because we have had almost 40 years’ experience and that counts for a lot! On a personal note, it was a huge surprise to be told my 1956 Beetle had been given the Ratters award while lining up the other DOTVW winners. This one is a first for me ever and this caps off a great year, after 37 years activity with the Volkswagen Club of Victoria.

This premium Volkswagen event deserves many accolades. We are sure that in Volkswagen terms this event represents great value for money where you could never get a better show in Australia. Until next year, keep enjoying your Volkswagens and hope to see at the 2020 DOTVW!

VWCV CHRISTMAS PARTY 2019Chris Scane and Matty Collis.

Well that was another great year in the history of the Volkswagen Club of Victoria and rounds out a fairly busy decade of local VW activities. This was the second time we have held the club Christmas party at Lloyd’s Man Cave 2 in Mirra Court and it is proving to be an excellent venue for this event.

The day turned out to be rather warm and this certainly contributed to a great day for the club members and their families. More than 70 members and 15 children attended and enjoyed the wonderful Christmas spread and plentiful liquid refreshments supplied by your generous club. Also suppling liquid ales was the Kombi Keg and this was also another Bay Window feature that was well received by the members present. On the entertainment side, we had some great music from the ‘Idle Men’ with Rod Davies belting out some memorable tunes.

There was also a Christmas auction which provided some excellent opportunities for members to get a last minute item for the Christmas tree. A special auction of the DOTVW Kombi Banner went to a very keen Andrea Green from Ballarat.

Also a special Encouragement Award was given to Daniel Scicluna to reward him for his enthusiasm and hard work at as many VWCV events he could get to. The award was a stylish trophy with a complimentary membership for Daniel and al this family. Congratulations Daniel, we appreciate your significant contribution this year and know you will keep the VWCV ball rolling in 2020!

After a good session of catching up with friends and reflecting on the year’s events, Santa made an appearance and the little ones went into a frenzy with lots of presents supplied by the club! Brian Palmer and David Hennessey with support from Maurice Ryan kept up a good supply of BBQ goodies – empty gas bottles are no barrier to these guys! Finally we would like to thank Lyn and Lloyd for providing a wonderful venue and many thanks for all the effort to have it ready for us together with thanks to the other volunteers.

Until next year, Happy Volkswagening!

July 1969On July 16, 1969, the huge, 363-feet tall Saturn V rocket launches on the Apollo 11 mission from Pad A, Launch Complex 39, Kennedy Space Centre, at 9:32 a.m. EDT. On board the Apollo 11 spacecraft are astronauts Neil A. Armstrong, commander; Michael Collins, command module pilot; and Edwin E. Aldrin Jr., lunar module pilot. Apollo 11 was the United States’ first lunar landing mission. While astronauts Armstrong and Aldrin descended in the Lunar Module “Eagle” to explore the Sea of Tranquillity region of the moon, astronaut Collins remained with the Command and Service Modules “Columbia” in lunar orbit.

There were issues surrounding the possible explosive nature of moon dust. Armstrong and Aldrin did their own test. Just a moment after he became the first human being to step onto the Moon, Armstrong had scooped a bit of lunar dirt into a sample bag and put it in a pocket of his spacesuit—a contingency sample, in the event the astronauts had to leave suddenly without collecting rocks. Back inside the lunar module the duo opened the bag and spread the lunar soil on top of the ascent engine. As they re-pressurized the cabin, they watched to see if the dirt started to smoulder. “If it did, we’d stop pressurization, open the hatch and toss it out,” Aldrin explained. “But nothing happened.”The Moon dust turned out to be so clingy and so irritating that on the one night that Armstrong and Aldrin spent in the lunar module on the surface of the Moon, they slept in their helmets and gloves, in part to avoid breathing the dust floating around inside the cabin.

VWCV HISTORIAN’S CORNERChris Scane WVCW Historian.

One of the joys of doing this job is seeing an idea come to completion. This was certainly the case when I came across this picture of these Bay Window Kombis at Cape Canaveral in July 1969 a few years ago. Although the quality was poor it is interesting that there are some very similar Westfalia Campers! Maybe this was a publicity picture from Volkswagen America as the Bay Window Kombi had only been released a short time. It is always a lot of fun to bring you the ‘Corner’ and we hope we have enjoyed this year’s editions.

December 1969R. Jacobsen was the President of our club in its 15th year. The club champion and winner of the ‘Laurie Whitehead’ Perpetual Trophy was Pat Whitaker. Pat was also the Motorkhana Champion and winner of the ’Roy Jarvis’ Perpetual Trophy. Pat Whitaker is the longest serving Life member of the club and was integral in the production of the written history of our club. Australia in ’69 many say was a simpler place had a population

of 12,008,635 which is less than half the current population. In December, the Australian Prime Minister John Gorton announced that a withdrawal of Australian Army troops from the Vietnam War would begin in 1970. Sir Henry Bolte was the 38th and longest-serving Premier of Victoria and one the other side of state politics was the Opposition Leader, Clyde Holding. Of the notable Australian performers born in 1969 there is Ben Mendelsohn, Simon Baker and with two Academy awards, Cate Blanchett. Of the sports personalities born in 1969 there is the 3 times Olympian and Silver and Bronze medallist basketballer - Shelley Sandie, Luc Longley, Tony Modra, Andrew Vlahov, Kostya Tszyu and Shane Warne, cricket legend with 708 Test wickets was the record for the most wickets taken by any bowler in Test cricket.

Finally, a big thankyou to everyone who has given so much support this year and it has been a great honour and privilege to be nominated and voted a Life member of this great club. I hope to bring you more interesting Volkswagen stories next year and with a bit of luck we hope to add to that with some more new member stories too!

COLLECTORS CORNER - BAY WINDOW KOMBI SCALE MODELSChris Scane VWCV Historian.

What a good time to bring back a previous Wagensville News feature in year we celebrate the Bay Window Kombi. Looking through the collection, a bay window model was not to be found. So trip to the local hobby model shop revealed no choices! But a few steps next door to the toy store revealed an interesting friction control Kombi – Rallye Red and White Surfer Van, which made its way back to my place! A bit more research revealed another large model Kombi in the very patriotic colours of gold and green.

Again you do not have to look far on Amazon and E Bay to find what you are looking for. If it is small models there is an interesting UK company called Oxford who do a number of 1:76 low light Kombis even with UK number plates.

They have three examples of the Bay Window version making up a nostalgic set, 76VW026 Bay Window VW Van – Light Grey. Comprising a plain grey solid bodied van registered ZXE 358G from 1968/69; this variation could be used for whatever you choose. The second VW in their set is a VW Minibus presented in a delicate shade of pale green and white with black chassis and cream interior. A special addition on this version is a planked roof rack and two surfboards. Registered TPD 735F from 1967/68, the model comes with white bumpers and wheel rims. 76VW004 VW Camper – Senegal Red/White. The last VW in the set comes as a

camper van decorated in bright red and white and registered RSX 144J from 1970/71. A special feature sees it with a raised roof section with clear ‘glass’ panel and canvas effect to the sides of the elevated section. The white roof also features a brown slatted area for luggage purposes. The interior of the camper van is cream and further detail worthy of note is the louvered effect to the side windows and the Westfalia name across the top of the rear window.

When you go to 1:18 models there is a bigger choice and sometimes a TV series is thrown in to add a little more notoriety. This Blue & White 1:18 Kombi from the LOST TV series and is a Greenlight Collectables brand -CODE NUMBER: 19011. Diecast Model - 1971 Volkswagen Type 2. 1978 Volkswagen Type 2 (T2) Bus Yellow with White Top “Little Miss Sunshine” (2006) Movie 1/18 Diecast Model is also by Greenlight as is the 1973 Volkswagen Type 2 Bus (T2B) “Field of Dreams” Movie (1989) 1/18 Diecast Model.

There are also lots of Model Bay Window Kombis in the 1:24 series so there are really no shortage of models to choose from. The wonderful aspect of having a model collection rather than the real thing is you can afford to have a good variety of cars, with plenty of space to keep them and very importantly cost nothing to run them!
