Coming Events
How quickly things can change with just a little rain. Peter Stone has been battling to keep things alive over past weeks, and now with summer storms and rain the gardens have jumped to life. Parents would have no doubt noticed the dramatic change to the Primary Campus, following the tree culling. Mr Stone has been working on the old entrance to Primary, and re-establishing some gardens. In addition the long awaited pavers from the P and C are in the process of being laid near the sundial.
YEAR 6 GRADUATION DINNER
Year 6 students will enjoy their graduation dinner tonight, followed by the end of year disco. Parents are reminded that the disco starts at 7.00pm and finishes at the earlier time of 9.30pm. Students need to arrive at the disco by 7.30pm.
HEAD LICE
Head lice infestations are a common yet frustrating occurrence, particularly with Primary students.
Did you know?
• 23% of primary students have head lice at any one time
• Anyone can catch head lice no matter how clean their hair is
• Head lice have built up some resistance to head lice treatments
• Daily combing of white hair conditioner using a fine tooth comb is effective in getting rid of head lice and eggs (nits)
If staff notice your child scratching their heads, we will call home to let you know. Most parents will come and collect their child and investigate whether head lice are present. Naturally not all parents are available on short notice. Last week at the P and C meeting we discussed the Nitbuster program which some schools have implemented.
NSW Health and Education guidelines indicate students should not be excluded from school because of head lice. I realise Pre-Schools, and private schools have different guidelines to those that operate in public schools.
PRESENTATION ASSEMBLIES
Each year we celebrate the success of our students at our presentation assembly. For our younger students the Infants Assembly is held in the morning at 9.30am. It will take place in the Great Hall on the Secondary Campus. The evening presentation for students Year 3-12 will take place at the School of Arts commencing at 7.00pm. A reminder that students are to be in full school uniform for our special events.
OUT OF UNIFORM DAY
Next Wednesday is the last day of school, and is an out of uniform fundraiser for the Student Representative Council. Students in primary and secondary will participate in rewards activities for part of the day. End of year reports will be issued to students on the last day of term.

PARENTS AND CARERS THESE HOLIDAYS
As the school holidays approach, it is important to remember when walking near roads,on footpaths, near driveways and in car parks always:
• hold your child’s hand. Until they are at least 8 years old children need to hold an adult's hand. Until they at least 10, children should be closely supervised by an adult and hold hands when crossing the road.
• talk to your child about road safety. Talk about how to be safe when near roads. Be a good role model.
• point out road safety dangers and differences in new environments. This is especially important when on holidays in different surroundings. Roads, footpaths and pedestrian may look different in holiday areas.
The best way to keep your child safe on or near the roadis to hold their hand.
Talk with your child daily about road safety.
Remind other adults and carers about this too.
You can find out more at Transport for NSW.

VET NEWS
As Term 4 draws to a close, students have been busy finishing off projects in Mandatory Technology. Mrs Harrison’s class are currently completing their Information and Communication Technology component of their agriculture project in the computer room. Mr Duncan’s Mandatory Technology Wood group are trying to finish off their first aid boxes before the end of term. It was very entertaining to see how enthusiastic they were at sanding their boxes as they were getting them ready for painting.
Year 12 Metal and Engineering were busy building Marking Gauge with Clara pointing out the design that she was having to follow while she was drilling a hole in her piece of metal. Travis was busy sharpening the slasher blades in the metal work room for his Primary Industry class where he is busy learning about machinery maintenance.
Mr Creamer’s Hospitality class have commenced their Café Skills competency assessment task which involves students learning to prepare a variety of non-alcoholic beverages to industry standard. Mr Creamer also took our girls cricket team away last week to the State Central Schools Finals. The girls performed well with two wins and two losses (report will be in next weeks Ringer).
Miss King has returned from her long service leave and is busy getting the 2015 swimming carnival organised. The swimming carnival will be held on Wednesday February 4 at the Merriwa Pool. All parents are welcome to attend to support their children on the day. If you are able to volunteer some time to help out with time keeping then please contact the school as any help would be greatly appreciated.
Year 10 have returned from their week of work experience with a greater insight into the world of work. Some students enjoyed their week so much that they are now looking at those industries with fresh eyes and as potential career pathways.
The VET faculty would like to thank all parents and the community of Merriwa for their support during 2014 and wish you all a very happy Christmas and an enjoyable break over the holidays.

PEER SUPPORT – YEAR 10
Last Thursday and Friday, the Year 10 class participated in the Peer Support Leadership Program, in the Great Hall. They spent time sharing their knowledge and experiences of school as well as taking action for their self development. The course has initial sessions exploring the key idea of effective communication, including active listening and open and closed questions as well as understanding how others feel and value their differing opinions.
On Thursday afternoon, the students participated in an important and fun activity is about group agreements. In this activity, the group standing in a circle, use their throwing and catching skills. They form a pattern trying to keep numerous balls in the air. It develops team-work, communication and resiliency. Inevitably there is a bit of frustration however lots more laughs.
Another highlight was a problem solving activity, where the scenario is being invited to a fancy dress party and the only materials they have are newspapers and masking tape. The boys decided that Lachlan Walmsley would make a good “businessman” and the girls decided that Georgia Cameron would a great “party girl”.
On Friday, the Year 10 students learnt more about leadership qualities with a game of memory. There were other sessions on assertiveness, facilitation, instruction giving and group management.
In the afternoon, groups of students worked on planning and implementing a Peer Support session. Their learning from the previous sessions was put on display. A greater understanding of how to effectively communicate and deal with disruptions was explored further.
Mr Lomax was impressed by the Year 10’s mature and thoughtful approach in considering the main ideas of the course and their compassionate and kind behaviour when engaging with the activities being presented.
Mrs Harrison was pleased to see so many eager participants in her year group. In addition she is excited to see her year students take on leadership opportunities over the next couple of years.
As always, the Year 10 students have learnt a lot about themselves and others in their year as indicated by the following viewpoints.
Madison “It was very educational and I learnt more about my peers.”
Craig “It was fun because the activities made me think about future leadership choices in my life.”
Janaya “We learnt a lot about each other.”
Year 10 student now have the opportunity to apply as leaders for next year’s Peer Support camp. Their applications are due on Thursday.

St Joseph’s Primary School
SWIMMING CARNIVAL
The St Joseph’s swimming carnival held last Friday, epitomises what a great school is and what great education looks like. The ‘Learn to Swim’ lessons were planned with the end in mind. The carnival was the means to assess student learning. As a collaborative team, the staff assessed student water skills several weeks ago. They then targeted the learning to the various needs of the children. Children were grouped according to like needs. Resources were allocated according to need and expertise. These resources included community facilities, parents and teachers. The children set their learning goals in collaboration with the teachers. On the day of the carnival all children participated to the best of their ability. It was an absolute delight to see records smashed by our most competent swimmers. Even more inspiring was watching students who previously were terrified of the water take hold of their kickboards and glide across the pool. The entire school community cheered the efforts of even our slowest swimmers and appreciated the huge effort they were making. Everyone was engaged and everyone’s learning was enriched in many ways. There was not a student, parent or teacher present on the day that did not reap the benefits of such an inclusive learning experience. The St Joseph’s School community is a great team. Thank you Mrs Kerr for organising the carnival, Mrs Peebles for organising the learn to swim lessons, Jason Constable and the Upper Hunter Shire for assistance and for the wonderful facility that is the Merriwa Pool, thank you teachers and parents who have helped at swimming lessons and for those who helped on the day. A special thank you to
Principal’s Report
the parents and grandparents who took time out after the carnival to let us know how wonderful they thought the day was. We appreciate your kind words – it makes the extra effort worthwhile.
New Library/Learning Centre will be delivered this week. We are very keen to get things organised for 2015 so that our great learning can start from day 1.
New School App for mobile phones is now operational. We have had great feedback from parents who appreciate the increased access we have to communicate with each other. The first parent alert went out last Thursday to advise parents that the weather caused swimming lessons to be cancelled. What a great way to keep in touch! If you haven’t downloaded the app to your smartphone, simply search for ‘St Josephs Merriwa’ in Google Play (for Android) or the App Store (for iPhones/iPads).
Community Day on the last student day of school will once again see our students gather at the hospital to sing Christmas carols and then walk to Gummun Place to entertain the residents there. This is St Joseph’s way to put back into our community and bring some of the joy of Christmas to those who can’t get out and about.
2014 STUDENT LEADERS’ REPORT
Throughout 2014 the Year 6 leaders have put a tremendous amount of effort into their role. They performed all the job roles as one Year 6 body. These different roles included responsibility for Sport and Recreation; Health and Safety; Religion; Public Relations and Communication; Student Welfare and the Environment. Most weeks we attended a leadership meeting with our school principal and class teacher. In these meetings we discussed issues in the school and discussed solutions for the problems as a team to try to make these problems better to make our school a better place.
We helped the teachers, Principal and students throughout the year. As leaders, we put 110 percent effort into everything we did, whether it was school work, homework or leadership roles.
2014 was a great year for Year 6 to shine. Some of these highlights were Mother’s Day Breakfast, Mission Day fundraising activities, Grandparents Day, Heathy Harold Day, Asthma PJ Day, Shrove Tuesday pancake stall, St Joseph’s Fete and Camp draft and our excursion to Coonabarabran.
The fundraising events raised large profits for charities and helped us understand how to organise fundraisers and work together as a team. The major fundraising event which is big
The St Joseph’s Mascot led the yellow team to a narrow victory!

on the school calendar is Mission Day. This day is provided by the leaders to raise money for the Catholic Mission. We organised events such as Jaffa Basher, Talent Quest, Lolly Guess, Obstacle Course and many more activities which gave the students lots of opportunities to donate money to the missions.
Organising the buddies for Kindergarten students and any new students throughout the year is one of our favourite roles. We also have the responsibility of giving out weekly “Playground Champion” awards to the deserving students.
Our biggest role, which encompasses all the others, is making sure that our school community is cared for and are safe. We pass this important role on now to the 2015 school leaders.
Goodbye and good luck!

I am pleased to report that the Pre-School’s fresh water tank is full and the children are now able to fill up their own drink bottles from the little tap. We have had several discussions about how the water gets into the tank and have even stretched our learning to the water cycle. The guttering on the cubby house is a cute addition. It has been wonderful to have some rain and our playground has been transformed by the much needed down pours. We have some wonderful new resources from the Kids Alive Team and we have enjoyed learning a lot about water safety at the beach, at the pool and particularly at the farm. The accompanying cd has taught the children the ‘Do the 5’ song which reinforces the themes they have been learning about. We are hoping that this is timely as many children are heading to the water for holidays.
Group games have been of interest and have included tee ball, cricket and soccer have been played in the playground and there has been great demonstrations of team work, problem solving and turn taking. It reflects the maturity and development of the children that they can manage these complex rule based activities.
Today was the first of our Pre-School Christmas celebrations and the next will be Tuesday at 10.00am. The party for the older children who attend on Monday, Wednesday and Friday will be held on Wednesday December 17 at 6.00pm. Please families bring along a little plate to share as we enjoy a BBQ together and enjoy the children as they participate in this wonderful occasion. We are running a major raffle from Calabash Mill in Dungog which will be drawn on the night of December 17 the prize is the materials for a wooden gazebo/carport. Tickets are $1.00 and available from the Pre-School.
This brings me to the start dates for 2015:

Thursday January 29
Friday January 30
Monday February 2
Tuesday February 3
My thanks to the wonderful educators of the Pre-School who have completed another year of professional and personal development. The skills and training that you bring to our setting is a benefit
to all service users and a credit to the community. I look forward to another year celebrating children and their many achievements.
The committee of the Merriwa Pre-School have had a great year marked with fundraising efforts. We have had some productive meetings and some laughs along the way. We hope you consider joining the committee for 2015. Many of our parents will move along with their children to Primary committees and we need you.

CALENDAR OF EVENTSDecember 14: Carols in the Park - 7.00pmWe give thanks for the safe ending of the school year and we pray for a Christ – focused community carols night and for many opportunities to graciously share the glorious gospel message at this Christmas time. We give thanks for the wonderful rain that has fallen on our parched earth and may it continue to fall on all the places that are in such need of God’s mercy in good gentle and plentiful rain.
Leading up to Christmas day we ask ourselves “What really Matters”?We can hear the familiar story of angels, shepherds, and the manger scene, St. Paul’s words to the church in Corinth “Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!”(2 cor:9-15). Clearly, God’s willingness to send His son to be our rescue is the gift that words cannot fully comprehend. This is the gift that we celebrate at Christmas..”Twas a humble birthplace, but O how much God gave to us that day: from the manger bed what a path has led. What a perfect, Holy way!”
And so three of the candles on our Advent wreath are lit, Hope, Peace and Joy. We pray Lord may all of these blessings radiate in our lives this Christmas that those around us may find warmth in your joy, now and forever.

Operation Christmas ChildCongratulations Merriwa we made our target of 150 boxes this year. Well done to all you special people who contributed in any way.
The target for NSW for this year is 110,000 and the warehouse in Sydney had reached 98,980 with only one week of processing to go.
This week four containers have gone to Vietnam, two to Fiji, one to Samoa, one to Cambodia, and one to Vanuatu.
The containers have to be cleared through customs and the receiving countries take delivery and distribute them to the different provinces and villages.
These boxes may arrive by boat, donkey or maybe horse and cart. It all depends on how remote the villages are.
Just Remember on Christmas morning as you and your family open your presents that you have helped to put a smile on the face of a child that would not have received a gift without your generosity.
Thank you again for your contribution.
Wishing you a safe, happy and blessed Christmas as you celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ.
May we each look forward in anticipation to 2015 and to what God has in store for us.
Blessings.

varying widely in recordings. It would appear that around 80 to 100 millimetres seems to be the average in the Shire. The rain has brought a welcome relief to farmers who now have the prospects of generating income. Having to sell one’s livestock in times of drought with the resultant loss of income is similar to someone losing their employment but the bills still keep coming. This can often result in anxiety and depression and people should seek help where needed. There is help for financial assistance and it is advisable to see a Rural Financial Counsellor who can advise on any assistance that may be available.
ROAD GRAVEL RE-SHEETING PROGRAMME
With the substantial rain received the roads that were in the gravel re sheeting programme this year have certainly benefited, thus allowing a much safer travel on the gravel roads. We acknowledge that there are many roads that have little or no gravel on the surface of the roadway but Council is addressing this in a continuing programme of gravel re-sheeting. It was pleasing to note the old Doolans Gully Bridge has been removed in readiness for construction to commence on its replacement.
CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS
At the last Council meeting it was decided that the four main towns would receive $600.00 for each town to go towards each town’s Christmas festivities. Each town will decide how this money will be spent to obtain to its best advantage.
Christmas Carols have been arranged in each town to suit their local needs. The annual Carols in the Park have been arranged in Merriwa for Sunday, 14 December at 6.30pm in Apex Park with local musicians and the Central School Choir participating, a BBQ will operate with the proceeds going to the Merriwa Preschool.
The Welcoming Centre in Merriwa has provided the venue for this year’s street festivities. The business houses of Merriwa will remain open for some late night shopping to add support to the festive atmosphere. Santa and Mrs Claus will be in attendance from 6.15pm onwards.
With the increase volume of traffic on the roads during the festive season, please drive carefully and safely and enjoy your Christmas Holiday
What’s Happening in Council?
After a long dry spell the welcome rain came. Rainfall varied from place to place with some falls

Merriwa PharmacyTHE PAIN OF SHINGLES
Shingles is a viral infection caused by the chickenpox virus (herpes zoster), and can only develop in a person who has already had chickenpox. After an episode of chicken pox, the virus lies dormant in nerve cells near the spinal cord, causing no harm or symptoms, but can reactivate later to cause shingles.
The majority of the Australian population is at risk of developing shingles, as over 95% of adults over 30 are exposed to the chicken pox virus. Approximately 150,000 Australians suffer an attack of shingles each year. It is estimated that by the age of 85 one in every two Australians will develop shingles.
Shingles may occur at any age, but is more common in people over the age of 50. Fortunately most people only have shingles once.
Shingles affects nerve fibres, causing a painful, blistering skin rash in the area of the affected nerves. Shingles often starts with a burning, tingling, itching or sensitive feeling on an area of skin. A painful red rash with fluid-filled blisters appears a few days later. The blisters slowly dry up, crust over, and heal.
The shingles rash can look like chickenpox, but is usually more painful and less itchy. It can feel so sensitive that even a light touch causes severe pain. Some people, especially children, have no pain, whereas other people have pain with no rash. Shingles generally affects only one side of the body.
No-one knows exactly why the chickenpox virus re-activates. Factors that may play a role include increasing age, conditions or medicines that weaken the immune system, and stress or illness.
Shingles can also cause a condition called post-herpetic neuralgia, in which the affected area stays painful or sensitive for weeks or months after the shingles rash has cleared. Post-herpetic neuralgia is caused by nerve damage. Shingles can also cause other problems, for example, shingles on the face or in an eye has the potential to damage eyesight.
Treatments for shingles include anti-viral medicines, pain-relieving medicines and soothing
creams, gels and dressings. Antiviral medicines (e.g. famciclovir, valaciclovir, aciclovir) stop the virus from replicating. Early treatment with antiviral medicines can speed healing, as well as reduce pain and other complications. Antiviral medicines must be prescribed by a doctor.
Pain-relieving medicines such as non-prescription pain relievers (e.g. paracetamol, ibuprofen) may help to relieve the pain, and you can buy them from a pharmacy. Stronger pain relievers (e.g. opioids and medicines for nerve pain) must be prescribed by a doctor, and these prescription only medicines may be required to relieve shingles pain and post-herpetic neuralgia.
Creams, lotions, gels and wound dressings can help to relieve the pain and protect the affected area. Once the rash has healed, capsaicin cream or lignocaine gel may also help to relieve post-herpetic neuralgia.
Vaccine protection is also available:
• Chickenpox vaccine – this vaccine can prevent both chickenpox and shingles (as shingles only occurs in people who have had chickenpox). In Australia, the chickenpox (varicella) vaccine is offered to all children at 18 months of age, through the National Immunisation Program (NIP). Ask your doctor or pharmacist about the NIP Schedule and vaccination for older children and adults
• Zoster vaccine – people over the age of 50 can have the zoster vaccine to prevent shingles. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice.
Your local pharmacy is your health destination and your pharmacist is there to provide advice, counselling and professional services along with dispensing prescription medicines and supplying non-prescription medicines. Treatments for shingles are all available from pharmacies. If you develop a case of shingles, visit your doctor or pharmacist to discuss treatment options.
You can get more detailed information about shingles from Merriwa Pharmacy. Read the Shingles Fact Card available from these pharmacies.

THE PERFECT TREE CHANGE WITH NBN CONNECTION
This 129 acre property has been lovingly established and looked after by the current owners for seven years. There is a gorgeous one room timber cottage with enclosed front verandah with a combustion fire inside and another fire to keep the porch warm and also to cook on.
Added bonus is NBN internet is connected to the property and also can be used as a phone. Directly out the front of the cabin is a fire pit, perfect for sitting around and singing a few camp songs.
A massive 22m x 11m shed has been built to house the two buildings. One is a container with full bathroom and storage the other is an insulated work hut which is currently used as the main bedroom, it has running water, A/C and TV Reception.
There are two x 5000gal tanks for water storage and a household tank, the current owners have not ever run out of water. On the property you will also find two dams, fencing in excellent condition and tracks in and around the property have been established for easy access.
The country is mostly Basalt Soil with some Red and Black soils at the top of the property. It currently holds 28 head of cattle. The land is mostly cleared with a small portion timbered. This property is a perfect tree change and is sold on a Walk In Walk Out basis!

Campbell who came along to training for the first time showing some great speed already in the sprints. Great to have the help of junior coaches Elizabeth Hagley and John Cronin and mum Olivia Gear with the tiny tots and Rob Patterson on the BBQ.
A big thanks to Roger and Megan Moore for giving the club the opportunity to raise much needed funds this weekend by running the BBQ at the RM Property and Livestock general horse and equipment sale at Merriwa showgrounds. Believe it or not, it costs $1000.00 a year to run Merriwa Little A’s and with all registration money going to insurance, we need to find other ways to raise money to keep our club afloat.
If you can help serve drinks, bake or bring something to sell, butter bread or flip some sausages for an hour or two on Saturday 13 December from 9.00am-3.00pm let Tash know at training or text her on 0458 574 015. Thank you!
Don’t forget Merriwa Little A’s has a team competing at the State Multi Event championships in Sydney on March 7 and 8 for athletes aged U/7 to U/17. Join William Luke, Grace Booth, Cody Bates, Jorji and Darcy Taaffe for some athletics fun in the big smoke next year. Let Tash know if you are keen to participate at training or send an email. Cost is just $20.00 per athlete for the weekend.
Next week is our LAST night of training for the term. Come along for some water inspired fun on the track and a family BBQ. This time of year is hectic with school wind ups so our Christmas Party/Last Night of Training is on THURSDAY December 18 from 5.30pm. Bring your own drinks and a plate to share – fruit, dip, chips, salad, sweets – and we will provide the BBQ. See you then!
