MARKET DAY
It was a beautiful day for the Gummun Place Hostel Market Day on Saturday March 11.
Sue Duggan, Hostel Supervisor thanked all that supported the Hostel at this event.
“We did have a very successful day and it would not have been possible without the help from the Merriwa community.
“All of the Hostel staff, residents and committee members helped on the day and were busy cooking in the lead up to the event. The Rotary went above and beyond to help, as they do every year, and we had a lot of the families and friends of the Hostel that donated goods for stalls and local businesses donated prizes for our choc wheel.
“A big thank you especially goes to Eva Towler for selling the raffle tickets and 100 clubs, Deidre Peebles for judging the colouring in competition and Margaret Witney and Beryl Llewelyn for cooking cakes and biscuits for our stall, which were a huge hit with the crowd,” Ms Duggan said.
There were four teams that took place in the first ever Gummun Place Challenge: the VRA Rescue Squad with James, Michael and Sally Hagley,
Stephanie Hook and Andrew Luke, the Old Girls with Jan, Shirley, Kay, Rose and Julia, the Gummun Place team with Courtney Martin, Tracey Swan, Tori McNaught, Brad Wilton, and Julie Wilton, and Rotary with Col, Barry, Mark, Frank and Ross.
Well done to the overall winners, the VRA Rescue Squad. The VRA took home a beautiful trophy and kindly donated the prize money back to the Hostel.
The winners of the colouring competition were: Pre School: First - Mia and Second - Matilda. Infants: First - Jeremiah and Second - Grace. Primary: First - Georgie and Second - Jye.
The winners of the white goods raffle were: First - Tammy Stapleton, Second - Wayne Foster, Third - Shean Morgan, Fourth - Ross Bishop and Fifth - Roy Morgan.
The winners of the 100 club were: First - Margaret Witney, Second - Harvey Duggan, Third - Denica Nutt.

Important Dates
Primary ReportLast Friday, Kindergarten shook off any nerves they had and performed their first assembly item. The students danced with confidence and many students wore their sunglasses to help take on a ‘cool’ persona as performed with flair in front of the audience.
STUDENTS OF THE WEEKCongratulations to the following students who were also awarded Student of the Week at our assembly for their outstanding class efforts and citizenship.
Kindergarten: Harrison Constable Year 1: Jai WrightYear 2/3: Georgia MabenYear 3/4: Zara SampsonYear 4/5: Kawit David (absent)Year 5/6: Jade Woodward
Our next Primary assembly will be held Friday March 31 at 2.00pm. This earlier start is due to our assembly being an Easter celebration where every class will present an item. We look forward to seeing parents and friends come along to watch our range of performances.
REWARDS DAY
Term 1 has been flying by and soon it will be Rewards Day time again. Rewards Day occurs each term and is a special day coordinated by teachers to celebrate and congratulate students who have consistently demonstrated appropriate behaviour in their classroom and the playground.
All students begin each term with five points. When a student receives an orange card (for a minor incident) they lose one point and if they receive a
red card (for a major incident or repeated minor behaviour) they lose three points. Students can earn points back by demonstrating exceptional behaviour in following weeks but they can only earn back one point per each week they behaviour appropriately. To complete Rewards Day activities students must have accumulated at least four points by the end of the term.
This term, the Primary teachers have coordinated a Rewards Day to include not only fun activities but to support a local mental health organisation ‘Where There’s A Will’. On Thursday April 6 students are welcome to come to school out of uniform. We ask that they wear such clothes inside out and make a gold coin donation for this privilege.
After recess, students who have at least four points will be able to go to the library to watch the movie ‘Inside Out’. This movie is about a young girl who moves to a new town and her five emotions try to guide her through the difficult transition to a new school and neighbourhood. This movie is PG rated and as such if there are any parents who do not wish for their child to watch the movie we ask that they contact the school to inform us and an alternate G rated movie will be organised for them to watch in a different classroom.
When the movie finishes, students will have the opportunity during lunch to purchase sweets from the SRC’s cake stall and play some games for a coin donation. If any parents are able to cook cakes, slices and/or biscuits for this stall it would be greatly appreciated by the SRC who are busy organising such a stall at the Primary and Secondary campuses.
At the end of lunch, the fun will continue as students return to the library to watch a visiting performance called ‘Too Cool for Bullies’. This performance has been arranged to not only entertain students but promote positive relationships and teach students strategies to cope with bullying incidences.
Merriwa RingerPage 4
All funds raised from the out of uniform opportunity, cake stall and games will go towards the ‘Where There’s A Will’ organisation who are trying to promote the importance of mental health awareness and education. Thank you in advance for supporting our school to raise money for such a valuable organisation.
CROSS COUNTRY
Our annual whole school Cross Country Carnival in conjunction with our fundraising Fun Run is coming up on Friday March 24. The carnival will be held at the Merriwa Showground and all primary students will need to arrive promptly at school so they can walk down to the carnival with their classroom teachers. Races will begin shortly after 9.30am and we hope to have all primary age groups complete the course by 12 noon. Parents are welcome to attend and cheer on our students but please remember students will be required to stay with their supervising teachers so all students can be accounted for and to foster sportsmanship as they sit with their friends to encourage other students.
All primary students have received applicable information and sponsorship forms. Please encourage your children to actively but safely seek sponsorship from known people such as family and friends. Not only do students receive great prizes for the money they raise but all funds are utilised to help our school to provide extra-curricular opportunities such as Zumba classes for sport and to pay for our students to watch acts from visiting performers. If students require additional sponsorship forms they can collect them from the front office and all forms are due back on March 24 so funds can be finalised.
PUBERTY TALK
Upper Hunter Community Health will be presenting a one hour workshop on Puberty for all student in Year 6. The workshop will take place on Tuesday March 14 at Merriwa Central School’s Primary Campus. The workshop has been developed by NSW Health Services and will be presented by Jodie Duffel, a Women’s Health Nurse from Upper Hunter Community Health, and is aimed at educating preteens on a range of body issues.
If there are any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Mrs Kate Jones at Merriwa Central School.
SPORTING OPPORTUNITIES

BLANDFORD SCHOOL HORSE SPORTS
On Friday March 3 Merriwa Central School attended as a team of riders to Murrurundi for the first school horse sports day of 2017. The six-member team consisted of three secondary students - April Lawler, Nicole Martin and Nicholas Morgan, and three primary students; Jack and Makayla Mobberley and Mia Morgan.
The children and their horses were all presented beautifully for the judging of the best presented school but we did not manage to catch the judges eyes on this occasion.
The morning flat work classes consisted of hack, rider and pleasure hack with all 6 children picking up ribbons. After lunch the pace changed up a gear when the sporting events were set up. The kids showed off their speed and agility while having a good time with their mates competing in the barrel race, flag race, snake race, bend-bar-aft and keyhole. Again, the Merriwa children placed well in all of these events.

St Joseph’s Primary School
PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Catholic Schools Week was one of excitement for St Joseph’s school and has left us all that little more passionate about our mission as a catholic faith community where the uniqueness of each child is nurtured and valued. Where students are empowered and challenged to become lifelong learners with optimism and hope for the future.
Our CSW display in town illustrated that “Every face has a place at St Joseph’s”. In other words we all belong in this school community. This was further reinforced at Andrew Chinn’s amazing concert on Wednesday where the children sang one of their all-time favourites which says that it doesn’t matter what our differences are because “side by side, together we grow, underneath God’s beautiful rainbow”.
Congratulations to: Patrick McLaren, William Henderson, Olivia Collins, Axul Hourn, Amy Redgate, Thomas Hunt and Madelaine Thrift, our Year 6 leaders who were commissioned last week. After 6 weeks of leadership training all students proved worthy of the role and have pledged their support of the school in leading the students throughout 2017.
A special visit from Mr John Tobin, Assistant Director of the Catholic Schools Office, left us all very proud as Mr Tobin visited all classrooms and congratulated them on their beautiful school and more importantly the wonderful manner in which the students present themselves and the spontaneous good manners they display towards each other and visitors to the school. Well done St Joseph’s!
“Enthusiasm” and “commitment” are two words to describe this year’s executive Parents and Friends team. Our meeting last week with President Andrew Luke, Vice President Will Mulligan, Secretary Fiona Wightman and Treasurer Megan Constable, left me confident that we are in good hands.
CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA DAY
On Friday, March 3, we cleaned up our school. In our collaboration groups we had to certain spots to look for rubbish and clean up. We wore our hats and we watered our trees. We were pleasantly surprised to discover there wasn’t much rubbish at all! Collaborative report written by the Infants class.
CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK MASS
Schools from all over the Diocese came together at the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Newcastle to celebrate Catholic Schools Week. Mrs Collins drove Olivia, Thomas, Axul and me. We were happily surprised to see our Father John there on the altar with the other priests.
The ASPIRE choir and Lochinvar students choir led the singing. It was very, very good.
The Bishop was very well suited to our school aged kids. His homily was interesting. Many people received Bishop’s awards which were really inspiring and interesting. Awards were given for taking time off their weekend to run charities, altar serving, participating in community events and school events and much more. These people were nominated by others. I would love to be good enough to be nominated for an award.
The CSO supplied our lunch – sandwiches, sausage rolls and pies. This was very nice of them.
On the way home it rained and in fact poured. There was none here in Merriwa!
I recommend teachers and students participate

LEADERSHIP TRAINING
We thought that the bus trip would never end but finally we arrived at St Mary’s Scone, to take part in the Young Leaders’ Training Day. Mrs Tait and Mrs Collins accompanied Stage 3 for the day.
There were leaders from across the region.
Through viewing video clips of great leaders and participating in activities, we learned how to be good leaders. Some of the qualities necessary are to be kind, be outgoing, be a good problem solver, to have a good sense of right and wrong and be a good role model.
We had the opportunity to go to the canteen at lunch!
I recommend the Leaders Day to all Stage 3 students in the future.

ANDREW CHINN CONCERT
“Red and orange, yellow and green” – I can’t get those words of Andrew Chinn’s song out of my head! Andrew Chinn sings a lot of great songs. He comes to our school every couple of years.
I really enjoyed his concert last week. He involved all of us in everything he did. His concert reminded me that you can be anything you want to be.
He really inspired me that you can go from a love of singing to a whole career. Every single person enjoyed it. It was the most fun I have had in ages.
I highly recommend all parents to go to the concert when he comes again.

REFLECTION: LENT 3 John 4:5-42
In the next three Sundays the Gospels come from John and focus on three major symbols of Easter – water, light and life. These readings are chosen to accompany the journey towards Baptism of those in the catechumenate program. In today’s reading Jesus meets a woman of Samaria who represents the whole Samaritan race. There was conflict between Samaritans and Jews so it is surprising that Jesus speaks to this woman. But Jesus has come to bring all people to life in God, which is the point of this episode. Jesus invites even the Samaritans to share the gift he brings, expressed in the symbol of living water that will last forever.
This living water symbolizes the life of God. We are to be like the well with God’s own life flowing within us. This is a completely new revelation to the Samaritans and to the Jews. This is why Jesus speaks of a new way of worshipping that will go beyond Israel’s worship in Jerusalem and the Samaritans worship on Mount Gerazim. No one place or people has a monopoly on God. The life of God within us will enable Christians to worship in Spirit, and enter into a true relationship with God. The woman’s former husbands symbolize the way people in the past tried to be in a relationship with God, but now Jesus comes to offer a new and fuller way of relating to God. From now on all people are invited to come to God in Jesus.
Are we ever aware of God’s life within us? Do we ever catch a glimpse of the wonder or beauty of God? This week spend some time beside the well of your own life and acknowledge the God who dwells within. (From “Sundays under the Southern Cross” by Mary Coloe PBVM.)

Congratulations to the Committee at Gummun Place for a great Market Day. There were lots of lovely things on offer, and the challenge was well worth the effort.
EASTER IS ON THE WAY
It is time to get organised for Easter. Easter is a time to celebrate, and is great as it is like Christmass without the pressure of impressing the rellies and buying copious amounts of presents. Enjoy a scrumptious seafood BBQ or a fabulous Roast Lunch, decadent chocolate desserts and relax.
Easter cards are now available.
BETTER HOMES AND GARDENS
The latest issue is on the shelves and is so colourful and bright you won’t miss it! It is filled with fantastic ways to brighten up your home and yard, including different knitted and crocheted versions of some great throw rugs, colourful feature walls, bright accessories, fabulous plants to plant now and so much more. It is filled with great kitchen renovation ideas for every style preference - industrial, scandi, cottage, country, retro, minimalist, modern and more.
GRAZIHER
This great magazine features inspiring rural women in our country. It looks at people who we may have never heard of without this magazine - those who work quietly in the background, getting things done, those who don’t hog the limelight but want to get their message across. As we celebrated International Women’s Day last week (Wednesday March 8) why not get into the spirit and give this magazine your time and attention. You will be amazed and inspired.
NEW RANGE
We have a new range of jewellery in store - a great range of semi-precious stone bracelets. These bracelets are made of red jade, clear quartz, onyx, amethyst and more. They are a great gift idea and they are designed to give protection, strength, and all other aspects imbued by these stones.
ALL WRAPPED UP
Do not forget that we have an extensive range of gift wrap and gift bags. We have all sized gift bags for boys, girls, men and women. We carry a great range of rolled wrap in cello - both clear and coloured - reversible, block colours and patterns. We have a great range of gift wrap as well, including several different reversible designs.
MERRIWA SIGN
The design for the new town sign is currently on display. Make sure you let the Council know what you think.
PHONECARDS; all cards are now available including Telstra, Optus and Vodaphone. Cash or Eftpos only.

Councillors taking part. Thanks go to the many school children and local people who volunteered their time last Friday to clean up their towns.
Mayor Bedggood and wife Michelle joined myself along with local people, resulting in bags of rubbish being collected. Overall the level of rubbish was less than in previous years. It is obvious by the reduced amounts of litter that with education and advertising what started out as a small idea has been embraced by most Australians and made us more aware and proud of our country.
Murrurundi locals were very active in their efforts around the road to the tip area and Visitor Information Center.
SIR IVAN FIRE APPEAL
Since the bush fire that burnt over 55.000 hectares of land with high livestock numbers, the generosity of the Australian people has once more been demonstrated by the gifts of money and materials, sheds, generators, fencing materials and moral support for those affected.
There have been truck loads of hay, grain from across the shire and further afield plus the generous donation of over 250 cattle. These cattle will be fattened for market at the Alexander Downs feedlot with the feed ration supplied by Alexander Downs free of charge .
The proceeds from the sale will go to the recovery agency and be distributed to the fire victims. Staff from the UHSC have been very active in the assistance and recovery process during and after the fire. Many thanks to those involved.
The Upper Hunter Shire along with the Warrumbungle Shire have set up Mayors relief funds to assist victims.
People from out of the area have joined forces under the banner of Blaze Aid to assist and rebuild the hundreds of kilometres of fences. These volunteers have been assisted with meals from local organisations all banding together to assist. What a wonderful community spirit exists.
To assist with rebuilding fencing contact Blaze Aid who are camped at Cassilis Bowling Club.

the club – go online ‘play nrl’ and register as a volunteer – there is no cost.
Our training days – Tuesday and Thursday – have been progressing along nicely with lots of boys and girls turning up for training. If you know of anyone wishing to play please ask them to register asap so we can finalise our teams. We need to know numbers so we can nominate what teams we will be having this season. The first game of the season will be April 1 at Aberdeen for our Mini/Mods. Draw still not out for the HVCC.
Coaches are: Under 6’s – Clint Walker; Under 7’s - John Whitby; Under 8’s - Someone please give me a call!; Under 9’s - Mark Brown; Under 10’s and 11’s may have to combine this year due to lack of numbers and will be coached by Ray Murphy; Under 14’s - Jared Austin. Our League Tag girls are growing in numbers and hopefully we will have three teams? Under 12’s - coached by Madi Swan; Under 14’s - Kate Blackadder and Under 16’s - Gaynor Blackadder. We need all girls wanting to play League Tag to register asap so we can finalise numbers to nominate teams for the season.
There seems to be no interest in the Netball this year. Kellie sent out emails to all from last year but no interest has been shown so far. Give me a call if you need info on netball. Remember that girls can play league up to the age of twelve and ten, eleven and twelve year olds and over can play League Tag.
For all Club News go to our Facebook page: Merriwa Junior Rugby League and Netball. Any cancellations will be posted on the Facebook Page ONLY. If it is not on the page what you have heard is not correct. Proceed as normal.
50 YEAR CELEBRATION WEEKEND: JULY 8 AND 9
This is coming along nicely with preparations for the weekend looking great. We are still looking for sponsors for the ‘Weekend’ at $250.00 or ‘Sponsor a Page’ at $50.00 for the History Book. Call Elaine if you wish to help out with either of these. The book will go to publication soon so names need to be in by the end of this month.

Our 6 weeks of Ladies CRL 9’s has sadly come to an end. On Friday March 10 we took on Aberdeen for third place at Muswellbrook.
We did a great job and won the game 8-4.
I have been told by numerous people that Merriwa have improved the most in the six weeks of playing and I believe it too. We should all be proud of ourselves.
Tackle football is a lot harder on the body but definitely an enjoyable game.
We would like to say thank you to:
• Coach - Bruce Blackadder
• Carol Mcloughlin, Nathan Barry, Phil Neale, John Maben and JH Orton who were our first aid and league safe officers
• Everyone who came and supported us, both at home and at away games
• Everyone that helped in the canteen and prepared the field for our home game
• The people who organised CRL 9’s for the Hunter Valley
And most of all I would like to thank the players: Kellie Walker, Kate Blackadder, Gaynor Blackadder, Taylah Blackadder, Kayla Barry, Casey Payne, Amber Austin, Justine Whitney, Tammy Mckenzie, Monique Bailey, Jessyca Morgan, Ainsley Maben and Brodi Hollier (who unfortunately sustained an injury playing).
Our season launch will be at the Merriwa Sports Club on Saturday April 8 at 6.30pm. There will be a BBQ, entertainment and much more. Training will be at Merriwa No.1 oval on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s at 6.30pm for all grades.

Merriwa Little AthleticsLittle A’s had lots of little stars on Monday night with another great roll up of athletes keen to see the season through right to the end.
Brax Mulligan impressed in the throws, stepping up from Tiny Tots to have a go with the big boys. Brax received lots of wonderful encouragement from big brother Wills which was lovely to witness at discus and shotput Aiden Hunt was also on fire, with a steely determination to perfect his discus this week. The persistence paid off Aiden, you are well on your way to delivering some big throws over 13m. Great job. Sammi Patterson was also brilliant, finding her footing and learning where to put her fingers around the discus to have an ‘a-ha’ moment of success, no doubt the start of many more great throws to come Sammi!
William Luke gave us a summary of his big adventure to Glendale last weekend to compete in his first State Multi event. While the competition was tough as many athletes use this comp as preparation for the State Championships, William held his own and delivered some awesome throws and, even better, completed his 800m right to the end! Great work William.
NEWSFLASH! – Please mark Sunday April 2 from 10.00am to noon at the No 2 oval in your diary! We are delighted to have HOLT HARDY join us for a ‘master class’ on running. Holt will go through lots of techniques and tips like overcoming pre-race nerves, how to get yourself in a good position in a pack start and how to work out your own race strategy. Holt is a home grown national and international athlete who has made the Olympic shortlist amongst many other achievements. This is a free clinic and is open to all little athletes and the general public – regardless of age and fitness level! See Tash Taaffe on Monday night at training for more details or call 0458 574 015 or email [email protected] to register your interest and assist with catering purposes.
