Wildfire near ShulusA wildfire started yesterday mid-

afternoon, north of the Mamit LakeRd/Hwy 97C turnoff, near Mojos. 16firefighters from the BC Forest Servicecrews and Lower Nicola Fire Deptresponded, along with 3 air tankers & 2pieces of heavy equipment.

The fire grew quickly to 2 hectaresbut airtankers made good progress con-taining part of it, and crews workedhard to build a guard around the rest.

The Fire Danger Rating is moderateto high across most of the KamloopsFire Centre, and the risk of wildfire will

continue to increase as hot and dry con-ditions dry out forest fuels.The Kamloops Fire Centre has

responded to 64 wildfires this season ofwhich 86% have been person-caused.Fire officials remind the public that

burning restrictions are in place; all fireslarger than 1m in height or diameter areprohibited. Although small, containedcampfires are permitted, the public isreminded to have hand tools and at least8L of water nearby to fully extinguish it.

Coq constructionTraffic will continue to be slowed

down for construction upgrades on thesnowshed hill until early August. Thechanges will give motorists a smoothertransition when they enter and leave thesnowshed. Meanwhile, the Ministry of

Transportation is asking travelers toslow down and watch for flaggers.

Legion renovationsLegion hall renovations have started!

We now have 10 new windows installed,replacing the old windows that had beencovered up with panelling, oh so manyyears ago. The next step is to strip off theold green carpeting that covered half thewalls, replace with gyprock and then paint lots to do. The Legion is having afundraising to gather funds for the renova-tion. While we have had some response,much more is needed. If you can help inanyway (work parties or funding), pleasecontact the Royal Canadian Legion.

The Royal Canadian Legion has been inMerritt for over 60 years and was a hive ofactivity for many years. The hall greatly

needs to be updated, so that again we canbe proud of our building and have it uti-lized more often. We are encouraging morepeople to come out and join. Rules have

been changed the last few years and youdo not have to have been in the military orto have relatives in service. Come on down to your local branch and find out more.
