Forwards Brandon Wong (now atQuinnipiac), Blair Riley (at Ferris State),and Wade McLeod (at Northeastern) areamong 7 BCHL graduates that havetaken the first step towards capturingNCAA Division I hockey's top individ-ual honour after being named to an ini-tial list of 50 nominees for the Hobey
Baker Award.Voting is by fan balloting at
www.hockeybaker.com, and the winnerwill mimick the superlative charactertraits put forth by the awards namesake,Hobey Baker, a World War I flying star &Americas greatest amateur athlete in hisday. Award candidates must exhibitstrength of character both on and off theice, contribute to the integrity of his teamand display outstanding skills in all phas-es of the game. Consideration should begiven to scholastic achievement andsportsmanship.
The Top Ten list of candidates will beannounced March 18; Hobey Hat Trick ofthree finalists, on April 1; and the HobeyBaker Award winner on April 9.
Mining explorationThe prov. govt expects that risingcommodity prices will mean a strongyear for BC's mineral industry. It reportsthat exploration activity reached $154million in 2009 with 30 mine develop-ment projects submitted the 6th-high-est total for exploration spending in thelast 20 years. Northwest BC saw $65 mil-lion in mineral exploration last year, theNortheast had $20 million & the North-Central region had $28 million. TheSouth-Central region had $21 million inactivity: $9 million in the Southeast and$11 million in the Southwest.
The govt is optimistic that 2010 will be a year of growth for mineral explo-ration, however a court ruling just lastweek reinstated the requirement for afull Federal environmental review, in
addition to the provincial one. Thisincreased cost & extended timelinecould play a part in slowing down appli-cations. However, the govt is extendingthe BC Mining Flow-Through Share TaxCredit for another 3 years, until 2013.
