We need a Sunshine Lady.

MVQ 40th Anniversary Jubilee! The Merrimack Valley Quilters Guild will cele-brate our 40th Jubilee Party in less than 6 months! We will celebrate our 40th anniversary as a talented collection of quilt-ers on Thursday, December 5, 2019 at DiBurros in Haverhill MA. We will have time to mingle before our sit-down dinner.

You will not want to miss this fun evening of deli-cious food, delightful friends and cheer! If you would like to join the Jubilee committee, please contact Phyllis Lauria ([email protected]). We are also looking for old photos of the guild and activities; if you have any, please let Phyllis know

June is our Contemporary Metro Rings class with Kathy Graves. That class is also filling up but there is room for more. I will need sign-ups done at the May meeting and need to know who needs the pattern and ruler. Kathy has to order them. If you have not gotten back to me by the night of the May meeting about that, I will not be able to place your order for the ruler and pattern. So please respond to my email or come see me. Both are necessary for the workshop. I also have a revised supply list which I sent to everyone who was signed up so far. Please stop by and pick one up if you don’t have it. I think this is going to be a lot of fun and an easy technique to learn. This class will also be at West Church from 9:30 to 3:30 in the Vestry on Saturday. I have 1 paid workshop seat that a member cannot use so I will be raffling if off at the May meeting. So give some thought if you would like to attend and I’ll throw your name in the hat.

Contemporary Metro Rings Due to popular demand, we are going to try a summer workshop. David Sirota will be back to teach Scrappy Chevron Stars – it is the next class up after Storm at Sea. The class was fabulous so think about joining us on Saturday, August 10th from 9:30 to 3:30 in the Vestry at West Church. You will never look at paper piecing the same I promise you. He said that if you missed the first class, you can quickly get caught up and still take this class so it is open to ALL members for the normal $25 Guild fee. You will cut all the scrappy fabrics on his supply list, put the pieces in a brown paper bag and we will share. This will not be a class where you get to plan your scraps (unless you bring all your own pieces and cannot function if you don’t) – it will be totally scrappy by blind-sharing everyone else’s scrappy pieces. It will be beautiful and so much fun. A sign-up sheet and photo of the wall hanging is at the workshop table and below.

Scrappy Chevron Stars I have spoken to Edyta Sitar and she is confirmed for April 2020. Spread the word! Workshop sign-up sheets will be available in September and we are still in the process of finalizing the contract and workshop topic. Both the lecture and the workshop will be will at NECCO in our usual room. Check out some of her tutorials ahead of time – she is amazing. If anyone is working on or has made an Edyta Sitar quilt, please plan on bringing it to that April meeting. I anticipate a big crowd as so many people are asking so we will all be PR for the Guild. We’ll have some handouts available in September about her visit. The guest fee will be $10 instead of $5. As I mentioned earlier, her workshop fee is $40 and her kit fee is $40 so you may need to start planning now. She is well worth the price and the experience of getting to know her and her work. Heather also will be sending out a link to an online survey about guild workshops. We want to plan our future classes based on what members want and this will be a way for you to tell us what would like to see.

Thanks for a great year! Ronni Longwell and Heather Shields Table sitters are needed. Please stop by the signup table to offer your time. End of July - Yankee Homecoming –Date and time to be announced. I will just collect names at this point and contact people as we

get more information. September 1

st - Newburyport Farmers’ Market at the Tannery on Water Street. Set-up – 8:00 Table Time - 9:00-1:00 (in 2 hour shifts) Break down – 1:00

Thanks in advance, Judy Naylor Judy Naylor

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

The Quilt Show Needs You! As some of you may have heard this is Carrie Zizza’s last year in the judging room and doing quilt show set up. She will be taking over this task for the Vermont Quilt Show. Congratulations Carrie! This means we have any opening that is vi-

tal to our show! I would like two volunteers. One to run the judging room; the other to take care of set up and take down of the quilts. We need two people ASAP so that they can shadow Carrie this year as she does that thing she does so

well. It is imperative that we fill these positions. Without it we have no show. Please contact me or Diane Kelly if your interested.

June Programs News

We welcome Kathy Graves this month from Next Generation Quilting who will be presenting a lecture and trunk show on modern quilting, with highlights from QuiltCon, the largest modern quilt show. She will present a Power Point voyage through trends in modern quilting by examining quilts and award winners that were shown at QuiltCon. A trunk show will also be presented. Her workshop on Saturday will be Metro Rings - Contemporary Wedding Ring with the Quick Curve Ruler. Her technique with this ruler allows you to make a similar quilt to the traditional double wedding ring pattern but without the tedious cutting and piecing of the small wedge pieces. Ruler and pattern are required. This will be held at West Church in Haverhill from 9:30 to 3:30. Please stop at the Programs table if you are interested. Last month Allison Wilbur visited and was truly delightful. Her lecture was full of fascinating stories from her world travels and time spent in Japan. The workshop was just as fun, and students learned lots of tips and techniques for how to do Sashiko. I think Allison enjoyed her time with us as much as we enjoyed having her! David Sirota is coming back for an encore class in August. Signups are full, but we do have a waitlist going. Remember that the special exhibit at the quilt show will display projects from classes at MVQ. Finish those projects and submit an entry form for them to be displayed! In October we have Marge Tucker visiting for a lecture and workshop. Marge is an international award-winning quilt artist. She recently won an award for Best Machine Quilting – Domestic at QuiltCon in February 2019. Signups for Marge Tucker’s Eel Grass and Eddies class in October will open at the June meeting. The class is an introduction to improvisational curved cutting and piecing. Detailed descriptions of the lectures and workshops scheduled for next year will be available in a separate Programs booklet at the June meeting. Signups for remaining classes (including Edyta Sitar) will open in October. I am looking for a vice chair to help with some of the Programs duties. If you are interested in being vice chair or just helping out occasionally let me know. From Ronni - thank you all for a great 3 years! It's been a pleasure being your Programs Chair. I hope you enjoyed the journey with me. Thank you Ronni for the excellent programs you have put together! You’ve brought in some amazing teachers and have put so much effort into making sure people have a great time at classes. Now it’s your turn to take a class for fun!

Have a great summer! I can’t wait to see everyone’s class projects at the quilt show! Merrimack Valley Quilters 2019-2020 Program August 2019: David Sirota Saturday, 8/10/2019 Workshop: Scrappy Chevron Star September 2019 Thursday, 9/19/2019: Ice Cream Social and

While you’re enjoying the lazy, hazy days of summer, please set aside some time to work on a comfort quilt or two. This year we are supporting High Pointe House – Hospice – in Haverhill and Believe Anything and Everything is Possible. Hospice provides pal-liative care at end of life and your quilt will be used to comfort a patient as well as their family. Believe Anything supports patients undergoing chemotherapy and they will be wrapped in your quilt while they undergo treatment. Both are amazing organizations and will be so grateful for our donations. Please make your quilts lap sized and bright and cheery. We want the patients to be wrapped in color as well as warmth! I would like these quilts brought to the September meeting for show and tell and from there they will be taken to our Quilt Show for display. In October, both organizations will be at the meeting to pick up the quilts.

Please call me if you have any questions and thank you for your kindness and generosity. Just a note also that knitted and crocheted blankets and afghans are also welcome. Ronni Longwell, Vice President
