Year 11 student, Emy Liao was selected from more than 120 applications for the 2019 Secretary for a Day. The two-day program brings students from across the state to the department’s offices in Parramatta in the first week of August, as part of Education Week activities. This year’s participants will work with Education Department staff to achieve positive change for schools and student learning and have the opportunity to influence system development. As part of the program Emy will also take part in creative and cultural advocacy and leadership workshops with industry and education experts. Education Week is a statewide, annual event that aims to showcase and celebrate the achievements of NSW’s public school system, its students and staff.

George McNamara and Scarlett Morante competed in the NSW Rostrum Public Speaking awards and were announced winners of the senior and junior competitions. George and Scarlett then travelled to Hobart at the beginning of this term and participated in the National Championships. Both George and Scarlett came away with a bronze medal each placing them overall third in both the senior and junior championships. An outstanding outcome for George and Scarlett.

Congratulations to Charlie Walker and Kelsey Van Eldik who at the recent Australian Schools’ Championships came home with a number of medals. Charlie came home with four medals, a silver in the 400m Individual Medley, Silver 400m Freestyle, Bronze 200m Freestyle and Silver 4 x 50m Freestyle relay. Merewether High students Zoe Davis and Aidan Bottom are taking their passion for politics all the way to NSW State Parliament. Zoe and Aidan participated in the YMCA NSW's Youth Parliament and have helped to develop policies and write bills that they debated in Parliament House during the last holidays. Year 12 student and school captain Zoë, 17, is the shadow education minister. Year 10 student Aidan, 16, is shadow transport minister.

As Year 12 move into the final few months of secondary schooling I would like to take the opportunity to wish all students the very best in their preparations for their Trial Examinations. Students will sit their Trial Examinations throughout the next two weeks. The weeks after the Trials and prior to the end of Term 3 are vitally important in the final preparations for the Higher School Certificate. All Year 12 are to continue their attendance in class and continue their learning program in preparation for the HSC. In the next few weeks Year 11 will complete their accelerated course Trial HSC Examination and then move into their end of the Preliminary Course examinations. All students should be working consistently towards these exams ensuring they are developing the skills necessary to support them as they move into their final year of schooling. Congratulations Sharvil Kesarwani secured second place in Australia and was awarded the silver medal in the Asia Pacific Maths Olympiad (APMO).

Adrian Harrod (Year 11) and Mikayla Harrod (Year 9) are members of 316 SQN Australian Air Force Cadets (AAFC). During the recent July school holidays, both SGT Adrian Harrod and CPL Mikayla Harrod were selected to commence a powered flying program at the AAFC flying facility at Bathurst. Over the course of a week, both students undertook theory lessons in Basic Aeronautical Knowledge and achieved four hours of hands-on flight time in a Piper Warrior PA28 aircraft. Practical experience in effects of controls, straight and level, banking and turning and climbing and descending was obtained. Typically a solo flight would be obtained after approximately 10 hours of flight experience with both students nominated for the next powered flying course in October.

Over the last weeks I have spoken to students about school uniform and the expectation that they will all wear correct uniform each day at school. I would ask that parents support us in this and if you need support in getting the correct uniform items to contact us to discuss how we can support.

Deputy’s Report

As Term 3 begins, we look to days becoming longer and the weather warming. I am excited to return to Merewether High after a recent overseas trip and was happy to see our students focused on moving forward this term.

For Year 12, they have their sights on the HSC Trials in weeks 5 and 6 and their transition from school. I am impressed with the strong application I see and the dedication our students are showing to their preparation. Our Independent Learning Centre is a positive environment to support them during timetabled study periods as well as being open from 7:30am each morning and until 5pm Monday to Thursday. Additional support is available Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday with staff who can assist on subject specific queries. I actively encourage our senior students to build a regular visit to the ILC into their daily routine.

There is a strong correlation between student choice and input into their curriculum and engagement and students from Year 7-10 will soon have the opportunity to choose options in their pathway of study. Our Subject Selection Information Evenings are scheduled for Week 4 in the Bensley Hall at the following times; Year 8, 2020 -Tuesday 13th August at 4:30pm, Year 9, 2020 - Tuesday 13th August at 5:30pm, Year 10, 2020 - Monday 12th August at 4:30pm and Year 11, 2020 - Monday 12th August at 6:00pm. At each of these information sessions, an overview of our offerings as well as the process will be presented in the Hall before the opportunity to speak with KLA Specific staff afterwards.

During week 2, all students present were issued with information booklets outlining the scope of courses on offer and their assessment at a meeting with either Ms Crooks or myself (copies of these booklets are located on the school Website under the specific school year section). Students are encouraged to discuss the nature and suitability of courses with faculty specific teachers over the next few weeks. We strongly advocate for students choosing subjects they feel they will enjoy and will succeed in. Our Year Advisors and Mrs Rippon, Mrs Crooks and I are also available to clarify any questions students or parents may have. Online sections will take place during week 4 and students will receive a web link and a unique password after the information nights.

Recently I had the privilege of taking two AFL Teams from our school to compete for the Isaac Louire Cup – a fixture in memorial of a young man who tragically passed away early last year. This evening featured two matches against our neighbours Newcastle High School as a show of support for Isaac’s family and to commemorate his spirit and involvement with AFL. Played with great sportsmanship, our teams competed strongly with our girl’s team being victorious and the boy’s team finishing a credible second in their match.

Overwhelmingly the evening was a great opportunity for friends from the two neighbouring schools to get together and celebrate the memory of Isaac and the impact of sport in bringing community together.

While most of our students represent us proudly in their full school uniform at all times, I would ask families to support us across the next two terms in ensuring their children are fully equipped with correct school uniform. Please actively encourage your children to wear appropriate black leather shoes along with the recommended shirt, shorts or skirt. We do appreciate your assistance in this manner.

MHS success at 2019 RoboCup Junior International In the last week of Term 2, the MHS robotics team “The Muppeteers” represented Australia in the 2019 RoboCup Junior International competition held at the International Convention Centre in Sydney. The event attracted hundreds of participants from over 40 countries to compete in various robotics disciplines. The Muppeteers team consists of Isabel Doherty (Y8), William Lyne (Y8), Madeline Dunn (Y9), Abby Jones (Y9) and Daniel Flood (Y10). The team participated in the OnStage discipline: a combination of technology and the arts where teams design, build and program their robots to move autonomously to music. The team qualified for Internationals after winning the national RoboCup competition in 2018 with "Rainbot Connection", a parody of The Muppet Show. The performance was further developed and extended for the international competition, with cool tech including 8 Lego Mindstorms EV3 robots, Arduino microcontroller, Pixy2 object-tracking camera, individually-addressable LEDs and a 3m wide motorised stage curtain! The combined effort on the project by the team in 2019 was several hundred hours so this was a massive undertaking. In Sydney, we competed over 4 days along with 19 other teams from around the world including U.S.A., China, Russia, Japan, France and Germany. After the inevitable teething problems that go with robotics, our second performance came together and went exactly to plan. While the team didn’t receive a podium position in the overall competition, we were awarded “Best Stage Performance” in our division based on a public vote. You can see the award-winning performance yourself at: https://youtu.be/WCavL9qAuLo?t=95 It was an awesome experience to compete for Australia at the international level and see the range and level of robotics equipment being used by the global teams. It was also a fantastic opportunity to meet and collaborate with students from other countries. On the final day of competition, our team was paired with a Brazilian team for the Super Team Challenge where groups must work together to develop a joint performance based on a global theme. Their English was barely better than our Portuguese so the Google Translate app received a heavy workout! We would like to thank the school for supporting our involvement in this event: the opportunity of a lifetime!

Junior Engineering excursion to Newcastle University

A group of keen engineering students from Year 8 and 9 were privileged to be invited to an individualised Junior Engineering program, run by the Engineering faculty, at the University of Newcastle on Thursday, the 25th of July. The morning began with a number of engaging introductions from Engineering professors, PhD students and other staff members. After a short morning tea break (catered for by the University), the students were tasked with solving a problem in which they had to develop a design for an aircraft with circular wings. The program concluded with a tour throughout the Engineering buildings and workshops. Overall, the Junior Engineering program was a great opportunity for students to receive an insight into Engineering at the University of Newcastle.

Cooper Ivory - Year 9

On Thursday, 25th of July, 50 MHS engineering students from Years 8 and 9 attended the University of Newcastle. We travelled by bus to the venue and were shown to a lecture room in the engineering faculty. There were presentations by current and past students from many fields of engineering, professors and even the Pro-Vice Chancellor of Engineering and Built Environments. These people showed us the different career paths that we could follow if we were to continue with engineering. After these presentations, we were treated to a morning tea, followed by a hands-on activity from the Science and Engineering Challenge. We then were given a tour of some of the projects and facilities. We saw parts of the environmental and structural engineering departments and then learnt about the 1st year projects we could do depending on the field. We saw projects for biomedical, mechanical, environmental, chemical and structural engineering. This program was exclusively developed for our students and we are very thankful to Ms Taylor for organising it and the UoN for allowing to have this experience.

Merewether High School Bulletin

On Thursday 25th July a group of 33 budding year 9 engineers competed in the University of Newcastle’s annual Science and Engineering Challenge against 6 other Newcastle schools. At the beginning of the day we were split into 8 groups, with each group competing in a different activity.

One activity was to design and build a bridge to support a ‘road’ (metal plate) which would then be tested on a rig at the conclusion of the day in front of everyone. The rules of the competition defined the design constraints for the bridge: the only contact the bridge could make with the test rig was the two ledges at either end of the bridge and as well as the road itself and the bridge could not extend above or be wider than the road. We were given complete free reign for the design and type of bridge we created however, construction was limited to the materials provided: 6 lengths of 5mm squared balsa, 15 paddle pop sticks, no more than 10m of masking tape, a collection of bent straws, paper clips and corrugated cardboard. Using some of these materials we created a 36g truss bridge.

After spending the day planning and constructing our bridge, the end of the day brought the dreaded time for testing. A preliminary test ensured our bridge at least supported the road. Once this was confirmed, we moved on to testing the bridge strength by running a trolley loaded with weights across it. Testing started with just the trolley and after each successful run a ‘gold ingot’ was added to the trolley and then the test was repeated. If a bridge survived testing with five ‘ingots’ on the trolley, the ingots were replaced with a much heavier Super Ingot. Of the seven competing teams, only three made it through to the Super Ingot round – MHS being one of them!! Although our bridge bowed under the Super Ingot weight, it held strong, which enabled us to progress through to the final round… the Bridge Buster, aptly named due to the fact that it is known to bust almost all designs. Unfortunately, our design did fail at this final hurdle, but so did the competition’s!!! The deciding factor was bridge weight - our bridge was successful in winning the activity as we had built the lightest bridge!!!

As the scores for the day were tallied up, the tension in the room was high whilst we awaited the final verdict. Despite leading the points table earlier in the day, we were pipped at the post with our 1203 points coming second to the winning school’s 1235 points. Although we weren’t victorious, we had a great day and thoroughly enjoyed the competition.

Social Science

Green Day 2019

At the end of Term 3, Merewether High School celebrated our annual Green day. This Social Science initiative is designed to educate students about the environment and promote sustainable development.

Students and staff were encouraged to dress in green or sustainable clothing providing a gold coin donation to support a local environmental organisation. This year students elected to support a local initiative ‘ Save the Koalas ‘.

This year the event was held on A - B lawn and the Enviro group ran a “MHS Thrift shop” to encourage the recycling of clothing. In Australia 85% of textiles go to landfill and two thirds of these discarded items are synthetic and never breakdown.

The Year 9 and 8 Commerce students did a fantastic job with running their businesses on the day. They were well organised, demonstrating an excellent understanding of marketing and efficient operations. The Year 9 Commerce stalls were required to include a sustainable practice as part of their operations.

The day was a great success with a festival feel and I would like to thank all staff and students involved.

2019 Australian Youth Representative to the United Nations

In week 4 of Term 2 Legal Studies students had a great opportunity to meet the 2019 Youth Representative for the United Nations, Kareem El Anasry.

The role of this UN representative is to travel across Australia to canvas young people’s views and opinions on local and global issues, gauging what action young people believe that governments should take in relation to those issues.

This was a great opportunity for our students to consider issues and provided a platform for their voices to be heard and put pressure on government to take action to reflect young people’s views.

‘A Different View’ - Memphis Bourne

In Term 2 we were also very pleased to welcome a student from the University of Sydney, a current resident of International House and the 2019 recipient of the Davis Project for Peace grant. The project, titled ‘A Different View‘, was aimed at raising awareness of issues facing individuals who have sought asylum in Australia. Our Legal Studies students were fascinated by our speaker who shared his life story of having to escape Iran as a 5 year old in the back of a truck. They gained greater insight into the complexity of ethnic tensions and the challenges faced by those seeking asylum. It was evident that the students were inspired by our speaker who is now a lawyer and were richer for the experience.

Business Studies

This term Year 11 Business Studies students have been studying Operations as a key business function. As part of this students have experienced the real life 'operations process' of producing 'tiny teddy cars' in the classroom. Students were given the inputs (tiny teddies, milky ways and a recipe) and asked to transform these using their own group transformation processes. Students had a lot of fun planning and producing their cars and learnt first hand how the operations function of business works.

LANGUAGE CLASSES

Year 8 French and Japanese classes spent Term 2 learning about relationships and descriptions through exploring the anime Totoro and Ratatouille. This term we have started exploring the cuisine of France and Japan with Japanese classes planning their Japanese character Obento boxes to make next week and French classes creating French menus. We are all pondering how far we would go in eating frog legs, raw fish and escargot and practising our chopstick skills…. An interesting term ahead!

Year 9 Japanese are exploring Japanese homes with tatami, futons, kotatsu and some very interesting toilets. We have all moved into our own ‘apartments’ for this unit of work with a few challenges ahead in our friendly apartment block challenge…. Who will end up in the penthouse at the end of this unit???

YEAR 11 JINDABYNE TRIP

During the last 4 days of Term 2 Year 11 set off with 12 staff to the slopes of Jindabyne. There was a lot of fun skiing, playing ping pong in the nightly comp, finding our groove moves in Just Dance dance-offs and expanding our knowledge and learning some embarrassing and interesting facts about some of the teachers at Trivia Night.

Jindabyne not only provided the chance for many of our students to try skiing for the first time, but more importantly, students enjoyed the chance to get to know each other better and spend time with each other outside of school.

Thank you to our beautiful Year 11 students and wonderful staff who volunteered their time to come along with us and who made this trip so memorable for all of us.

“I absolutely loved it! It was one of the best experiences of my life and I had a lovely time with our year group. I had never gone skiing before and was a little nervous about trying it but absolutely adored it and want to go back as soon as a possible. It was a great time for everyone who went and it was really nice to have an amazing final school trip like this one :) “ – Hannah Harrison (Yr11)

“Jindabyne has been one of my favourite school excursions and it was snow much fun!! haha

The hot chocoloates on the mountain were a major highlight.” – Saskia Ferguson (Y11)

“Jindy was a beautiful and exhilirating experience, with gorgeous views and unforgettable moments. Thank you very much! :)” – Nicole Maningo (Yr11)

“I had an amazing time and learnt how to ski. And really it becomes much easier after the first time.” – Vihan Roy (Yr11)

One we will all remember……

“If you lose your ski pass you’re a muppet” - Ash, 2019

A final quote from Mrs Allen….. “I couldn’t have asked for a better bunch of muppets to share this

adventure with!”
