GOD GATHERS US AROUND THE WORD † You are invited to stand when you see this symbol.

PRELUDE O Little Town of Bethlehem C. Callahan WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

† CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader: When the time was right, God sent the Son;

Right side: sent him and nourished him,

Left side: reared him and risked him,

Right side: filled him with laughter and tears and compassion,

Left side: filled him with anger and love and devotion.

Leader: Unwelcomed child, refugee and runaway, All: Christ is God’s own son.

Lover of the unlovable, toucher of the untouchable, forgiver of the unforgivable, Christ is God’s own son.

Loved by women, feared by men, befriended by the weak, despised by the strong, deserted by his listeners, betrayed by his friends, bone of our bone, flesh of our flesh, writing heaven’s pardon over earth’s mistakes. Christ is God’s own son.

The Word became flesh: Christ came among us; Jesus was one of us.

† Carol Twelve Days of Christmas Frederic Austin

On the first day of Christmas my true love sent to me:

PRAYER OF BROKENNESS

Holy God, the prophets proclaim, the angels announce, the star lights the way, and we still ask, “Where?” Like children, we stand first on one foot and then the other, waiting impatiently for a parade, so eager for the bands and floats that we miss it while telling a friend what’s coming. We want a circus, God. We want ringmasters and acrobats, tigers and elephants, and dancers on horseback - not some straw-scattered shack with a swayback donkey and a tired woman with a ho-hum history. Holy One, keep us willing and alert so that, when you reveal yourself, we may be aware. Amen.

ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS

† SHARING THE PEACE OF CHRIST (Please greet your neighbors with signs and words of peace and reconciliation.)

† CAROL O Little Town of Bethlehem St. Louis

O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by.

Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting light; the hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.

For Christ is born of Mary and, gathered all above,

while mortals sleep, the angels keep their watch of wondering love. O morning stars, together proclaim the holy birth,

and praises sing to God the king, and peace to all on earth.

How silently, how silently, the wondrous gift is given! So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of his heaven.

No ear may hear his coming, but in this world of sin, where meek souls will receive him, still the dear Christ enters in.

O holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray; cast out our sin, and enter in; be born in us today.

We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell; O come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel!

SECOND LESSON Genesis 22:15-18

† CAROL O Come, O Come, Emmanuel Veni Emmanuel (verses 1,2,6,7)

O come, O come, Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel, That mourns in lonely exile here until the Son of God appear.

Refrain:

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, thou Wisdom from on high, who orderest all things mightily:

to us the path of knowledge show, and teach us in her ways to go. Refrain

O come, thou Dayspring, come and cheer our spirits by thine advent here;

disperse the gloomy clouds of night, and death’s dark shadows put to flight. Refrain

O come, Desire of nations, bind all peoples in one heart and mind;

Bid envy, strife, and discord cease; fill the whole world with heaven's peace. Refrain

THIRD LESSON Isaiah 9:2, 6-7

† CAROL Go Tell it on the Mountain Go Tell It

Go, tell it on the mountain, over the hills and everywhere Go, tell it on the mountain, that Jesus Christ is born.

While shepherds kept their watching o’er silent flocks by night

Behold throughout the heavens there shone a holy light. Refrain

The shepherds feared and trembled, when lo! above the earth,

Rang out the angel chorus that hailed our Savior’s birth. Refrain

Down in a lowly manger the humble Christ was born

And God sent us salvation that blessed Christmas morn. Refrain

FOURTH LESSON Isaiah 11:1-4a, 6-9

† CAROL O Come All Ye Faithful Adeste Fideles

(verses 1,3,4)

O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant! O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem!

Come and behold him, born the King of angels;

Refrain O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him,

O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord!

Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation, sing, all ye citizens of heaven above! Glory to God, all glory in the highest!

Refrain

Yea, Lord, we greet thee, born this happy morning; Jesus, to thee be all glory given;

Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing! Refrain

† CAROL Hark! The Herald Angels Sing Mendelssohn

Hark! The herald angels sing, "Glory to the newborn King. Peace on earth, and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled!"

Joyful, all ye nations rise; join the triumph of the skies; with the angelic host proclaim, "Christ is born in Bethlehem!"

Hark! The herald angels sing, "Glory to the newborn King!"

Christ, by highest heaven adored, Christ, the everlasting Lord, late in time behold him come, offspring of a virgin's womb.

Veiled in flesh the Godhead see; hail the incarnate deity, pleased with us in flesh to dwell, Jesus, our Emmanuel.

Hark! The herald angels sing, "Glory to the newborn King!"

Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace! Hail the sun of righteousness! Light and life to all he brings, risen with healing in his wings.

Mild he lays his glory by, born that we no more may die, born to raise us from the earth, born to give us second birth. Hark! The herald angels sing, "Glory to the newborn King!"

SIXTH LESSON Luke 2:1-7

† CAROL Away in a Manger Mueller

Away in a manger, no crib for his bed, the little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head.

The stars in the bright sky looked down where he lay, the little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.

The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes,

but little Lord Jesus, no crying he makes. I love thee, Lord Jesus; look down from the sky,

and stay by my side until morning is nigh.

Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask you to stay close by me forever and love me, I pray.

Bless all the dear children in your tender care, and fit us for heaven to live with thee there.

† CAROL We Three Kings of Orient Are Kings of Orient (verses 1, 2, and 3)

(1) We three kings of Orient are; bearing gifts we traverse afar,

field and fountain, moor and mountain, following yonder star.

Refrain: O star of wonder, star of night, star with royal beauty bright,

westward leading, still proceeding, guide us to thy perfect light!

(2) Born a King on Bethlehem's plain, gold I bring to crown him again,

King forever, ceasing never over us all to reign.

Refrain

(3) Glorious now behold him arise, King and God and Sacrifice:

Alleluia! Alleluia! sounds through the earth and skies.

Refrain

Shepherds quake at the sight; glories stream from heaven afar,

heavenly hosts sing “Alleluia! Christ the Savior is born; Christ the Savior is born!”

radiant beams from thy holy face, with the dawn of redeeming grace,

Jesus, Lord, at thy birth, Jesus Lord, at thy birth.

GREAT PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.

...Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

BEARING GOD’S WORD INTO THE WORLD † CAROL Joy to the World Antioch

Joy to the world, the Lord is come!

Let earth receive her king; let every heart prepare him room,

and heaven and nature sing, and heaven and nature sing,

and heaven, and heaven and nature sing.

Joy to the earth, the Savior reigns! Let all their songs employ,

while fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains repeat the sounding joy, repeat the sounding joy,

repeat, repeat the sounding joy.

No more let sins and sorrows grow, nor thorns infest the ground;

he comes to make his blessings flow far as the curse is found, far as the curse is found,

far as, far as the curse is found.

He rules the world with truth and grace, and makes the nations prove

the glories of his righteousness and wonders of his love and wonders of his love,

and wonders, wonders of his love. † CHARGE AND BENEDICTION POSTLUDE Go Tell It on the Mountain C. Callahan

Heavenly Father, Loving God, our preparations to celebrate the birth of the Christ Child are done and our hearts are filled with love and gratitude, not only for Your Son, but for all children, the hope of the world.

Last Sunday, as we watched the children in the Christmas pageant, showing us the glory of the miracle of your birth, we saw through their eyes just how amazing the story is. In this world of so much "stuff,” it is not only eye opening, but also heart opening, to see Mary and Joseph with Baby Jesus in the manger, in the stable, with no real home and very few belongings. What a contrast to what we think we know about how life should be.

We pray for all children, Lord: children whose lives appear to be secure, children whose health is in question, children of Aleppo and other tenuous societies, whose very existence is in question. For all of these children we fervently pray for safety, good health, and for love and peace in their lives.

This Christmas morning we give thanks for you, God’s greatest gift, wrapped not in shiny paper, but instead in swaddling clothes. How humbled we are.

These prayers we send to you in the name of the Christ Child. Amen.
