Message to our coMMunity

mercy medical Center – Des moines has a long history of service to our community. this year, we are honored to join this legacy of care by serving in new leadership roles for the organization. it is our sincere privilege to be a part of the extended mercy Family of talented professionals and dedicated volunteers. together, we work each day to provide the best mercy experience possible for all we are privileged to serve.

Since transitioning to our new roles, we have witnessed amazing patient stories and we are touched by the sacred nature of the work performed at mercy. Whether watching a little boy in our children’s hospital recover against all odds from life-saving cardiac surgery, or witnessing the joy on new parents’ faces as they celebrate the birth of a child, or learning how people previously struggling with debilitating health challenges were given new hope through a five-paired kidney donation chain, it is abundantly clear mercy is a special place.

in this year’s Annual Report to the Community, we are pleased to share a glimpse into that special mercy experience; and, because of you – our community members, patients and guests – we have many reasons to celebrate.

one cause for celebration is the national recognition our mercy Family received for delivering the highest quality health care in the region. CareChex®, a rating service of Comparion®, a national independent health care data organization, recognized mercy as #1 in our market for overall medical Care. in addition, mercy medical Center – Des moines was named one of the nation’s 50 top Cardiovascular hospitals for 2013 by truven health Analytics. For the 14th year in a row, national Research Corporation awarded mercy its 2012/2013 Consumer Choice Award. these honors, among many others, are the result of the tireless efforts of mercy physicians, staff and volunteers working to provide the best mercy experience possible.

As health care providers, our goal is to improve the health of our community, and a key measure to good health is access to quality medical services. We are proud to offer central iowa’s largest multi-specialty physician clinic system, providing convenient, quality care where it is most needed. As demand for our services continues to grow, we expanded our services into additional communities in 2013 – opening primary care clinics in West Des moines and Carlisle, while also welcoming ottumwa Family practice and Specialties Clinics and ottumwa internal medicine north into the mercy Family. in addition, we broke ground on a new clinic in Ankeny, which is scheduled to open next year.

looking ahead to 2014, the mercy medical Center – Des moines Family will continue to celebrate our accomplishments, but most importantly, we will continue our work to refine the mercy experience so every patient and visitor may witness firsthand the values we embrace and the service we provide.

By providing the best mercy experience possible, we fulfill the sacred mission set forth by the Sisters of mercy in 1893 – to live our values of reverence, integrity, compassion and excellence in service to others.

may you have a very successful 2014, filled with blessings, good health and happiness. it is our pleasure to serve mercy and to share our Annual Report to our Community on behalf of the mercy Family.

Mercy Women & infants center celebrated the birth of 4,835 new babies in fiscal year 2013. thankfully, most of these babies entered the world full-term and healthy. When complications do arise, mercy’s highly trained experts offer parents peace of mind. When facing high-risk pregnancy or a premature delivery, mercy has the facilities, staff and skills our littlest patients need and deserve.

From our state-of-the-art Variety neonatal intensive Care unit – the most widely-used niCu in the state – to the highly skilled staff of mercy’s perinatal Center of iowa –

specializing in care of high-risk pregnancies – mercy is there, providing compassionate and skillful care.

the staff at mercy medical Center – West lakes celebrated new life for 275 babies in fiscal year 2013 – the largest number of births since the hospital opened in 2009. to help improve the patient experience for expectant parents, a Volunteer Birth Doula program was developed. Since offering this program, birth doulas have assisted in nearly 10 percent of all deliveries at West lakes, helping to reduce the need for pain medications, epidural injections and even Cesarean births.

We celebrate...neW life.

emergencies happen when you least expect them – this is when speed of response and skill can mean the difference between life and death. mercy is prepared to provide emergency care for patients of all ages through our 24/7 emergency Department, staffed by board-certified emergency medicine physicians and trauma surgeons who provide the best possible care for our patients and their family members.

When patients present at the emergency Department with chest pain or symptoms of stroke, it’s good to know that mercy is central iowa’s only hospital with a Joint Commission-certified primary Stroke Center and central iowa’s first Society of Cardiovascular patient Care-accredited Chest pain Center. We stand ready to act quickly, greatly increasing the rate of survival for patients in need.

in the past year, more than 75,000 patients visited the emergency departments at mercy’s central campus and mercy medical Center–West lakes. During this same time period, mercy West lakes introduced central iowa’s first emergency department with specialized care for older adults. With amenities such as pressure-reducing mattresses, reading glasses and magnifying glasses, hearing amplifiers and more, the emergency department is able to meet the needs of older adults requiring specialized care.

patients arrive at mercy’s emergency departments both by land and by air. in october 2012, mercy one – iowa’s fastest air ambulance service – opened its third operating base in Clarinda, iowa. the new aircraft allows mercy to serve patients in southwest iowa, northwest missouri and southeast nebraska. Between the three helicopters, mercy one completed 1,204 flights, saving countless lives in the process.

We celebrate...strength of the huMan spirit.

through our network of primary care physicians, health coaches and mid-level health care providers, our patients are changing their lives for the better each day. We work as a team to help improve quality of life through management and treatment of many chronic conditions – including diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity.

mercy’s commitment to providing convenient access to primary care services continues to be a prominent focus. in october 2012 West Grand medical Associates in West Des moines joined mercy Clinics and became mercy West Grand medical Clinic. Residents in Carlisle and surrounding communities gained better access to mercy’s care when Family practice Clinic, plC, became mercy Carlisle Family practice Clinic in December 2012. in addition mercy ottumwa medical Clinic was

welcomed to the mercy Family, opening in July 2013. mercy Clinics also broke ground for a new clinic in northern Ankeny – mercy Briarwood medical Clinic – scheduled to open in 2014.

expanding clinic locations also means the addition of new primary care physicians and providers to the mercy Family. in the last year, mercy Clinics added 50 new primary care physicians and providers, bringing the total number of primary care physicians and providers at mercy Clinics to 232. As a group, these dedicated medical professionals saw a total of 942,377 patients during the last year.

the delivery of health care services is rapidly changing, providing a great opportunity to improve health and quality of life of the patients and families we serve.

We celebrate...Working together toWard better health.

your loved ones are closest to your heart. our experts are the best equipped to get you back to spending time with the people you love. the integrated service of mercy medical Center – Des moines and iowa heart Center is the largest provider of cardiovascular care in iowa with 50 physicians and 20 mid-level providers serving patients in eight offices throughout the state – Ames, Ankeny, Carroll, Fort Dodge, Des moines, marshalltown, ottumwa and West Des moines. in addition, iowa heart Center brings skilled cardiac care to more iowans through 28 outreach clinics located across the state, where access to advanced care is often limited. We provide the best heart care available, close to home.

iowa heart Center physicians and surgeons see more patients – and perform more procedures each year – than any other physician group in central iowa and are dedicated to providing world-class heart care and disease prevention services to iowans and their families.

our compassionate, dedicated physicians are national leaders in cardiovascular research – evaluating new devices, medications and surgical techniques in clinical trials to offer the most advanced treatment options available to patients. iowa heart Center patients are often among the first to take advantage of new therapies, years before those same therapies are commercially available to patients.

We celebrate...What’s closest to your heart.

Mercy Medical center – des Moines is steeped in the traditions of foundress Catherine mcAuley and the Sisters of mercy. mother mcAuley set the example for all of us to follow and, still years later, we look to her principles to guide us in loving, compassionate support of our community and the people we serve.

mercy Family members participate in several charitable causes throughout the year, including the annual “Shoes that Fit” campaign and “Combat hunger.” mercy staff members helped provide much-needed clothing to area children, purchasing nearly 700 new winter clothing items – including coats, shoes, boots, jeans, shirts, hats and mittens in the past year. in addition, through the generous donations of time, energy, food and funding,

mercy was able to raise 5,781 pounds of food for the Food Bank of iowa. this donation, in conjunction with citywide Combat hunger efforts, meant thousands of iowa families had food on their tables last winter.

Another generous supporter of mercy services benefiting the community is mercy Auxiliary. mercy’s single largest donor, the Auxiliary has granted more than $8.6 million to the organization since 1948. During this fiscal year, the Auxiliary hit an impressive milestone by welcoming its 2,000th member to the organization. the Auxiliary is 100 percent self-funded and financial support is made possible through patronage at the Auxiliary’s various retail locations – gift shops, the salon and mercy Starbucks – and annual fundraisers.

We celebrate...With purpose and tradition.
