This Friday’s challenge brings building a bridge to reach 50cm with only a specific handful of equipment. The
winners judged by our staff were Lily Shorrock, Emily Schulz and Sam Emms.
Ms Ashton's Stage 5 class had the great experience of inflating a set of sheep
lungs. The experiment demonstrates the remarkable ability of a set of healthy
lungs to exchange Carbon Dioxide for new Oxygen.

Principal Report
Over the last month the executive have been discussing and reflecting on our 2018 planning and
milestones and evaluating progress and working on the 2019 and beyond framework of learning.
We are a learning community that promotes, values, learns and evaluates. We focus on students
wellbeing, excellence in classroom learning delivery, feedback and reflection, excellence in teacher
professional learning and excellence in community engagement.
We aim for sustainable practices with a commitment to;
• Nurture, guide, inspire and challenge students
• Prepare students to make successful transitions from Stage to Stage, future learning, study
and employment
• Provide engaging lessons, continually analyse growth and understandings that support pro-
fessional learning for all
• Collaborate and learn from and with local context and community.
It is anticipated at the October P&C meeting refined planning overview will be presented.
Over the last fortnight Year 7 and 9 were part of NAPLAN Online, teachers reported that stu-
dent’s attitude and application to this testing was outstanding, thank you to those students.
Year 12 Trials are now completed. This year we decided to employ external supervisors to en-
sure that Year 12 knew ‘what to expect’ in the HSC examinations. Congratulations to Year 12
trial completions. Mrs Young asked Year 12 to complete a feedback survey i.e. trial examination
to ascertain how we can further support Year 12 in their final weeks of formal schooling.
Families will be aware that school holiday workshops will occur, it is anticipated and encouraged
that Year 12 be part of this important learning strategy.
Congratulations to those students who have undertaken work experience, feedback has been
outstanding.
We look forward to reporting to families learning successes for students in the next few weeks,
in particular;
• Camp at Wooglemai Oakdale
• State Athletics

Writing in the Middle Years
On Tuesday 27th August all staff completed ‘Writing in the Middle Years:
Teaching beyond the Standard’, a course that supports the explicit teach-
ing of continuum of writing skills across the middle years of schooling.
The course addresses priorities based on NAPLAN writing data. Content
is based on standards of the NSW Department of Education Literacy
Continuum K-10 and reflects the outcomes of the NSW English K-10 syl-
labus.
Thank you to Mrs Middleton and Ms Beck who facilitated the course.
CEF University Experience
Through the Harden District Education Foundation and
the Country Education Foundation (CEF), students
from Murrumburrah High School had the opportunity
to attend the CEF University Experience Program last
week.
Students from Year 10 and 11 got to experience first
hand Uni life and what was on offer.
A quote sent from the University of Canberra;
‘From our team at UC, we had a great few days and the feedback we have received from the academic staff at the University is that the students were engaged, po-lite, insightful and a pleasure to work with, which is a fantastic reflection on the students and their schools, and your efforts in promoting the Camp to participation schools.’

LEAP This week in LEAP the students undertook activities in
communication and active listening. This activity was
using effective communication skills to create words in
a team. Can you guess what the words the students created
are ?
Work Experience Will attended his first day of work placement this week and had a
great day meeting the residents of Southern Cross Care St Law-
rence Apartments. Will applied himself to his duties for his first shift and impressed
with his presentation skills and wiliness to learn. He also impressed
Facility Manager Shelly with his understanding of hand washing pro-
cedures and infection control policies.
He will be completing his placement over the coming weeks and
we wish him all the best.

MPS Spelling Bee
Earlier in the term three of our Year 11 Advanced English students
attended Murrumburrah Public School to assist them in the running of
their annual spelling bee.
The coordinator, Mrs Beal sent through the following message: ‘I just wanted to send a note through to say a very big thank you to Riley Southwell, Rachel Battye and
Emily Stanfield for their assistance during our annual MPS Spelling Bee which we coordinate in prepara-
tion for the Premier's Spelling Bee Competition.
Riley, Rachel and Emily were exemplary in both their presentation and representation of MHS and I would
like to professionally and personally thank and commend them on their effort. It was so lovely to see stu-
dents conducting themselves in such a positive and enthusiastic manner.
I would also like to thank any organising staff from MHS for their involvement in selecting the girls.
What a great learning community we have here in Harden-Murrumburrah.

The twin towns of Harden Murrumburrah will mark the 150th birthday of one of its historic Catholic churches with a music con-
cert.
The concert to celebrate the sesquicentenary of the Parish St Mary’s, Murrumburrah, will be held in its Harden sister church St
Anthony’s at 2pm on Sunday, 21 October.
The church, which holds about 600 people, has not hosted such an event before. All members of the community are welcome and
entry is by gold coin donation, proceeds to farmer’s drought appeal.
The Australian Rugby Choir with more than 40 male voices will come from Canberra to feature at the concert. Other performers will include Drew Ashley, from Canberra, who will perform songs from the Phantom of the Opera and Frank
Sinatra, Hilltops soprano Julie O’Connor, musical director of the Australian Rugby Choir Rachel Campbell, teenage artist Harry
Cleverdon, Trinity School choir and the Butt family with Greg Jamieson and Oscar Smith.
The then Bishop of Goulburn William Lanigan blessed and laid the foundation stone of St Mary’s Church on 27 September, 1868. In the late-1800s priests travelled on Saturday by train from Cootamundra to celebrate Sunday Mass, returning home the following
day. With the increase in the Catholic population, St Mary’s was extended in 1895 with 14ft of stonework added to the original aisle
and the massive granite bell tower built.
The additions were funded in the main from a bequest by an Irish resident Mrs James Murray.
The stone was quarried at Demondrille and carted with bullock teams, and horses and drays by John Shea.
A parish lunch in September and an anniversary Mass in November will also be held to mark the historic occasion.

Dear Parents and Carers, The Department of Education is working closely with the Black Dog Institute to support the im-plementation of Youth Aware of Mental Health (YAM), an evidence based mental health pro-gram. As part of the Wellbeing initiatives at Murrumburrah High School, all Year 9 students will be participating in YAM for five hours over a three week period. This program will be run at our school by qualified YAM instructors. YAM is a culturally sensitive program targeted at all our Year 9 students to promote in-creased knowledge and discussion about mental health, as well as the development of problem-solving skills and emotional intelligence. There are six themes explored through discussion and role play in the program: What is mental health; Self-help advice; Stress and crisis; Depression and suicidal thoughts; Helping a friend in need; Who can I ask for advice. Students will also be issued an information resource booklet about content covered in the course as well as local support networks that they may find help-ful. This is a free program for all Year 9 students at Murrumburrah High School. The Department of Education has funded all costs associated with the YAM program. Three Sessions will be held at the school on Wednesday 12 Sept 10.05 - 12.35pm, Wednesday 19
Sept 10.05 - 12.35pm and Wednesday 26 Sept 11.35 - 12.35pm. If you do not wish your child to participate in YAM or to gain further information about the YAM program please contact:
