Who We AreSince its inception in 2013, NHEMA has worked with business owners, area workers, property owners, residents, and community members to collaborate and improve the area for those who live and work in the diverse and vibrant community that surrounds East 125th Street in East Harlem.

What We Have Been Doing for Our MerchantsNHEMA has initiated numerous programs aimed at directing business to our merchants and improving customer experience along the East 125th Street retail corridor. These projects are undertaken with the goal of directly benefiting our merchants and the people they serve. Here are a few we are particularly proud of:

• We have sent out mailers to 5,000 residents promoting NHEMA merchants.

• We have produced professional videos profiling NHEMA members which are used to promote these merchants

• We conducted a comprehensive survey of people who shop along the East 125th Street corridor and, using this data, produced an insightful, data-rich report on customer experience.

• We have just launched a mobile marketing campaign to raise awareness of NHEMA merchants and offer discounts at their stores.

• Collaborating with the Horticultural Society and over 50 volunteers, we planted trees, daffodils and perennials along East 125th Street, greatly improving the street’s aesthetic appeal and making NHEMA merchants’ storefronts more enticing.

• We send out a weekly newsletter highlighting news, stories and sales from our merchants.

Street Cleaning

Since January 2014, we have been working with Association of Community Employment to employ homeless individuals to clean the streets from 3rd Avenue to 5th Avenue between East 124th and 126th Street. Since the program’s inception, over 25,000 bags of trash have been picked up and, after receiving valuable job experience and training from ACE, 18 of the homeless street cleaners have gone on to secure full-time employment. This means less trash in front of our merchant’s stores and a more pleasant customer experience on East 125th Street.
