SOLVANG CALIFORNIA
SITE OF THE SOUTHWEST REGIONS 2016 REGIONAL EVENT.
Friday May 20th the San Diego contingent, Steve and Carol Ross and Rudy Wokoek and Rose Bolton, departed for Solvang California to take part in the annual Southwest Regions
event. After getting clear of the ever con-gested Los Angeles traffic we were welcomed by the lush valley going into Camarillo. The drive on up to Solvang and Buellton area was relaxing and very scenic. These villages nes-tled in the Santa Ynez Valley were settled by
the Danish immigrants who founded Solvang around 1911. As is the case with many
towns California this area was once a part of the Rancho San Carlos de Jonata a mere 26,634 acres. Arriving in Buellton we checked in at the Anderson Inn which is a part of the famous Andersen Pea Soup family business that was founded in 1924 by Anton and Juliette Andersen Danish Immigrants. The Danish windmill is the trade-mark of Andersens.
After checking in, we joined the rest of the gang in the Long-Beach South Bay Section's hospitality Suite. Sections represented were Los Angeles, Channel Islands, San Diego, Orange County, Desert Stars and the Central
Coast Section a part of the Western Region. There was an abundance of food and about any beverage one could want and in short order the place was bursting at the seams with Mercedes-Benz stories and reminisces of
past regional events. Of course Geoff Boldt was mentioned more than as few times as he was the founder of these regional events. As usual there were many questions about the next days rallye as usual the Rally Master
told us nothing except to say we will go over everything in the morning. Los Olivos--Do you go inside or outside the flag pole when turn-ing?? I found out the outside is wrong.

ENCINITIS CRUISE NIGHT
Several of our members brought their automobiles out for the Encinitis Cruise Night. Bob Gunthorp brought his
Rot Wagen, Gary Jarvis motored up in his 250SL, VP Victoria and her Benz came, S Ross with the Golden Eagle,
Munira & Dave Coomber with their 190SL , Joanne Bernard and her SLKL and Ray Davis. As you can see there is an array of SL's which is in keeping with the theme of the evening which was Pagodas. Charlies's Foreign Ser-vice, our host, treated everyone to delicious a Mexican Buffett.
Bright and early Saturday morning we had a continental breakfast and proceeded to the rallye headquarters to meet with the Rallye Master. We got our rallye instructions and away we went into the back roads of Santa Ynez valley. To say this
was a beautiful drive would be a gross understatement. There appeared to be a winery every ten miles or so along with cattle, horses and berry farm and other produce. Lunch stop was at the Faulkner winery where we feasted on tri-tip and chicken, beans, rice, salad and rolls. The rallye took us through the towns of Los Alamos, Orcutt, Los Olivos, and Santa Ynez. It was truly a lovely peaceful drive, even for a rallye. For some of us I think it was the first time to see these small towns tucked away in the Santa Ynez Valley.

Lunch stop Nora Fleming, Bill King, Bob & Charlene Scudder appear to be first in line. Nora Fleming, Steve Ross, Terry Kiwala, and others await their turn. No cutting the line or special favors here. There was an abundance of food.

The rallye took us through the towns of Los Alamos, Los Olivos, and Santa Ynez. It was truly a lovely peaceful drive, even for a rallye. I for one had never been in any of these towns except for Santa Ynez. In fact, I was not aware that some of them exist-ed.
Los Alamos Orcutt Los Olivos Santa Ynez A genuine Coonskin cap could be purchased for your wine bottle. Yes I bought one.
Perhaps the highlight of the rallye was our visit to Fess Parker's Winery in Los Olivos. This sign was no help at all on the rallye. Yes my wife bought a couple
After the rallye we visited the Nor Garage in Buellton with owners Rich and Mary Nor. Mary Nor the lady side of the business and a certified Mercedes-Benz Mechanic and a contributor to the Star Magazine gave us a tour of their shop. She is also an accomplished artist working
in glass and other media sculptures.

As I recall they had four Mercedes-Benz 450SLC's in their shop. I have never seen that many SLC together at one place ever. One is Rich's serious off road rallye car. He has upgraded the engine to a 560 and other modifications are evident.

THE AWARDS BANQUET AT THE VINEYARD RESTAURANT
Our awards banquet was held at the Vineyard Restaurant in Santa Ynez. We had a choice Babes Salmon, Angus Steak, chicken Marsala, or Butternut Squash Ravioli. All of the attendees awarded one of these wine goblets en-graved with the MBCA Logo and the event. These goblets were prize enough if one did not win in the car show or rallye. As is always the case
Mercedes-Benz folks always come home a winner.
The ambience was outstanding and the food was in keeping with the Mercedes-
Benz Marque.
After dinner, Rallye Master and Host Gerhard and Islolde made the awards presentations to the awaiting crowd.
AND THE WINNERS ARE
First place in the concours Gene & sally Kruger
With their 60ies finback
Second, place Chris and Glenn and Bedford with their Red SL. I think it was a 560.
Third place and happy to win it Steve & Carol Ross with "Cocoa Benz"
AND NOW THE RALLYE WINNERS
First, place Rich & Yvonne Leamon driving a 250 SLK. Even though they are not in our region anymore rallye master Gerhard did no penalize them for that. Yvonne is the Central Coast President Richard is the section "somme-lier". Probably section in the MBCA with someone in this position. We didn't
have any those in Missouri so I had to look it up. Best I can figure it is a person who drinks a lot of Wine so they can tell us what is good. Rich is a good "sommelier". Wonder if they have such a title for Scotch?

Second place Terry Kiwala and Bill King driving a Bright RED SLS
AMG. I only saw them at the stops. Mr. Kiwala indicated to me that he really liked the car. I wondered why Bill never got out of the car!
Third place in the rallye Bill & Angela Woodward and I believe they were driving an SL
SUNDAY MORNING
Sunday morning Gerhard had arranged a private tour of the Mendenhall's. It was started by the
current owners grandfather in the 30ies. The grandfather had a gas station and over the years begun collecting service stations memorabilia. Now the collection covers an acre or two and all the collection is in separate building arranged in a square like the old western forts.
The office building is in what was once a church in the late 1800, It was acquired by the family, and that is all I know about that story. If you are in Buellton and have an hour or so stop and
visit this astounding collection of signs and service station artifacts. Probably one of the largest in world.
This is the family home above the office. Yes,
this is their only home and this where they live
surrounded by their artifacts and treasurers.
Our group taking a break in the shade. The guy wandering off is Rich
Leamon. Many thinks to the Long Beach-South Bay and Channel Islands Sec-tions for hosting this fantastic weekend of fun with the Mercedes Benz Club of America. Thank you Gerhard and Isolde for being our hosts
and Peter and Tamara and all the others for supporting the cause.

By 1911, the 3.2 million paving bricks
used to make the 2.5 mile Indianapolis
Motor Speedway had been laid and the
first Indianapolis 500 was held at the
Brickyard on May 30, 1911. There were
two white Benzs in the race and one Mercedes paint-
ed gray, the original Silver Arrow, driven by Spencer
Wishart. At the tender age of 19, Wishart came in
fourth in the 1909 Vanderbilt Cup in a specially
modified Mercedes Grand Prix car, in a race where
many older and more experienced drivers got caught
up in the many accidents that occurred in that race.
In the 1911 Indy 500, Wishart started 27th in a 40-
car field but managed to get into the lead by lap 6,
and ultimately brought home the Mercedes in fourth
place in the first Indy 500; the Benzs finished in 18th
and 19th.
In the 1912 Indy 500, Wishart was back with his
gray Mercedes and Ralph De Palma entered another
Mercedes and led for an incredible 196 of 200 laps,
building a cushion of four laps, until a connecting
rod let go on lap 197. De Palma slowed on the front
straight and nursed the Mercedes for another lap
until the car finally quit on the back straight, as the
broken connecting rod had put a hole in the crank-
case. To the cheers of the 80,000 people in the
crowd, De Palma and his riding mechanic pushed
the car back to the pits. But in the meantime, Joe
Dawson in an American-built National, overtook the
De Palma car and won the race. Interestingly, given
Michelin's return to Formula One racing next season,
Dawson was on Michelin tires, the French tire sup-
plier's only win at Indy, although Michelin will get
another opportunity in 2001 when the U.S. Grand
Prix is run again at Indy. In the end De Palma fin-
ished in 11th and Wishart in 15th in the 1912 Indy
500. For the 1913 Indy 500, Wishart and De Pal
had abandoned Mercedes for Mercer and Mercedes
was represented by Ralph Mulford, who some
thought had actually won the controversial first Indy
500 in 1911. Mulford went 500 miles in his gray
Mercedes on the same set of tires and finished 7th.
In addition, a Mercedes-Knight was entered, which
was a car with a gray and white Mercedes chassis
and a 4-cylinder Knight engine; it finished 5th in the
race. In the 1914 Indy 500, Ralph Mulford entered a
white and blue Mercedes with a Peugeot engine that finished 11th in the race.
The original Mercedes
