It’s indeed easy to add turmeric to your daily

meals. Here’s how:

urmeric isn’t just the most adored spice of the Indian subcontinent but is also widely accepted around the globe for its numerous health and beauty benefits. In India,

we love our Haldi in curries, to treat wounds, cold, swelling, and even as a dye!

GEOGRAPHYCurcuma longa of the ginger family or turmeric is a tropical perennial plant that is grown annually for commercial pur-poses. This plant is native to South and Southeast Asia, and its vegetation requires a mod-erate temperature with a con-siderable amount of annual rainfall.

TEXTURE, COLOR & SMELLThe turmeric powder is pre-pared using the rhizomes, that are boiled in water and dried, post which they are ground into powder. The final product looks orange-yellow. Turmeric is known for its earthy aroma and bitter taste.

USAGEIt is consumed both in powder form as well as raw and fresh. The use of turmeric for me-

dic-i n a l

and cos-metic pur-

poses is also not unknown. Other

properties include add-ing it as a colouring agent

to cheese, butter, and packaged food like ready-made curry powders. Additionally, it is used to give boiled white rice a golden colour in most parts of Asia and South Africa and as a holy paste applied onto the bride and groom’s skin before marriage in India.

HISTORYIt is said that turmeric has a long-standing history in India. Its use dates back almost 4,000 years ago to the Vedic culture. One can find more about it in Ayurveda, Unani (a system of alternative medicine that orig-inated in ancient Greece but is now practised primarily in In-dia), etc.

MEDICAL BENEFITS Turmeric’s medicinal prop-

erties have been challenged, debated and won over a mil-lion times by experts. Cer-tain properties that could never be dismissed are its antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, an-tioxidant, antiseptic, and di-gestive activities.

Turmeric acts as herbal med-icine that helps the digestive organs cure disorders relat-ed to abdominal pain, disten-sion, liver and gallbladder.

Apart from that, it is com-monly used to treat cuts, burns, and bruises, and as an antibacterial agent.

Intake of turmeric has been proved to be the best way to help lower the risk of heart diseases, helping against neurodegenerative diseases, diabetes, and preventing cer-tain types of cancers.

In India, ‘Kacchi Haldi’ (translated as ‘fresh turmer-ic’) is primarily consumed for its wonderful health ben-efits, especially during the winter season.

VARIETIES OF TURMERICThere are over thirty types of Haldi cultivated across India (in Amalapuram, Armour, Dindigam, Erode, Krishna, Ko-dur, Vontimitra – to name a few places). Erode, which is also called Madras, grows the best kind of turmeric which is pop-ular worldwide. The aforemen-tioned are the most famous Indian varieties as well. The Indian states that overlook tur-meric vegetation for commer-cial purposes are Kerala, Ta-mil Nadu, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Assam.

ABOUT CAULDRON SISTERSRatika & Richa Khetan, two Sisters, started Cauldron Sisters in 2015. It started as an exotic food gift ham-per business, but their love for food encouraged them to start culinary workshops, food deliveries, and slowly and gradually it turned huge as restaurants and cafes started approaching them for consultancy.

COVID 19 pandemic has been just as hard on the entertainment industry as other sectors. Film production has come to a complete halt and there is mostly no back-

up source of earning for daily wage workers. Dancers, lightmen, spot boys, and other utility workers who thrive on the per day wages while walking out a film set have found themselves with-out any work or earning. Several celebrities have acted as good samaritans in these times and now Ak-shay Kumar joined hands with the legend-ary choreographer Ganesh Acharya through his foundation to donate a month’s ra-tion to 3600 junior danc-ers of the film industry.

CITY BUZZGET VACCINATED

STAY MASKED

STIRRING THE SELF AMIDST CALAMITOUS COSMIC FORCESCITY FIRST

storm of cata-clysmic cos-mic forces one after another has caught humanity in its tight grasp

keeping everyone locked at home within the ‘four-walled pe-ripheries’. Therefore, the key to keeping one ‘self ’ free from such disastrous shackles that could deteriorate one’s mental and phys-ical health both lies in engaging oneself in constructive habits such as reading and writing.

In specific, while reading an autobiogra-phy, a person goes on the ride with the auto-biographer the way

he/she drives the nar-rative choosing the roads of reality and personal experiences so that one forgets their fatigue and en-grosses in the activity of self-healing.

A new book On the Wings of Life: Women Writing Woman-hood edited by Dr Shalini Yadav and Dr Krati Sharma, is a marvellous as-semblage of twenty-one erudite articles written on autobiogra-phies of illustrious In-dian women who could see the light of the day spreading their fra-grances in the aura; could fly on the wings of life in the realm of the world creating his-tories in various fields such as sports, busi-

ness, film industry, de-fence, and in various other professions. The cover of the book is apt, enthralling, soul satiating and an amal-gam of Indian tradi-tionalism with Global modernity.

Besides, the articles reveal the marvellous

prospect of engag-ing oneself in a monotonous set-ting for self-heal-

ing cum encourag-ing drive during the unprecedented im-pacts of viruses on the lives of people.

A well-off industri-alist and writer, Prab-ha Khaitan’s autobiog-raphy ‘A Life Apart’, reconnoitred by Sha-lini Yadav, is a perfect exemplar of how one can footstep on the ar-

duous trail between the passion for love, work and independ-ence.

Anjali Singh Chau-han, in the article enti-tled “Gayatri”, throws light on the life of Ma-harani Gayatri Devi from Royal Rajasthan who stood out as a woman writing wom-anhood.

Sumedha Mahajan’s ‘Miles to Run Before I Sleep’ and Gunjan Sax-ena’s ‘The Kargil Girl’ being a ‘Saga of Suc-cess and Reclamation of Identity’, encour-ages everyone to serve one’s nation.

This emergent ‘New Woman’ with her pow-er, her ideas and her story infuses the vac-cine of vigour.
