CUBE AWARDS
Piece by Piece for the creation of this year’s awards.SPECIAL THANKS TO
The Cube Awards honor individuals and organizations that demonstrate outstanding leadership, generosity and vision in meeting the critical need to engage and educate children in science, technology, engineering and math. Honorees have played a vital role in advancing Discovery Cube’s important mission. We are delighted to present this
year’s awards to Pedram Salimpour, MD and Chevron.

Tonight we are celebrating an important milestone in science education in Los Angeles, the 5th year anniversary of Discovery Cube Los Angeles!
This milestone is important as we are now able to look beyond the work of establishing a new museum to the next phase: one that deepens our impact, provides greater access, and expands our programming.
The success of the Cube has been in the assembly of talented staff, an energetic Board of Directors, and many champions throughout our community. Champions like our Founding Board Chair Pedram Salimpour, MD and Chevron. Dr. Salimpour’s thoughtful and dedicated leadership has resulted in over 1,200,00 Angelenos participating in STEM education, inspiring them to create a meaningful impact in their own communities. On a personal note, it has been such an honor and joy to work with Pedram over these first five years. In addition, today we are honoring our incredible STEM Proficiency Champion. Chevron has been an early supporter of DCLA since the very beginning, and their increased commitment to DCLA will result in the creation of ‘Festival of STEM’ in Spring 2021- a program designed to showcase innovation and encourage students from all backgrounds to pursue STEM careers.
More than ever before, our mission is needed to inspire the children of our community to experience the world around them through the lens of science. California leads our nation in innovation, and our children are the ones that will carry on the role to create a sustainable green economy, to protect our identity as technology advances, and to help us solve health pandemics like the Coronavirus, that our world will face.
Thank you to all the members of our Cube Family! And to those new friends that are joining us for the first time tonight, we hope you get inspired to join us on our journey as we enter into the next phase of Discovery Cube.
Thank you for attending tonight and for caring about the children of our community!
Cheers!

Welcome to Discovery Cube Los Angeles’ fifth annual gala! Our annual gala is a testament to the passion and enthusiasm the community has for science education and we are thrilled to have you join us for another fun and educational evening spectacular!
Discovery Cube Los Angeles celebrated five years of impact in Los Angeles on November 13, 2019. Over these past five years, Discovery Cube Los Angeles has served over 1,200,000 children, teachers and caregivers who have participated in onsite and offsite programs focused on our four core initiatives: STEM Proficiency, Environmental Stewardship, Healthy Living, and Early Learning. In so doing, we exceeded our original five-year projection by 20%!
The 1,200,000 community members impacted by DCLA represent 934,000 museum guests, 161,000 students hosted on field trips, of which over 23,000 received a full scholarship, 170,000 students served in our outreach programs and 1,800 teachers provided with professional science education training. This impact could not have occurred without supporters like you!
This year we are proud to be celebrating our community pillars, Pedram Salimpour, MD and Chevron in recognition of their profound commitment to the Cube. These honorees have provided vision, guidance and support impacting Discovery Cube Los Angeles in countless ways, for which we are forever grateful.
We couldn’t be more thrilled to celebrate this momentous evening with our friends and colleagues. Thank you to everyone here tonight for making Discovery Cube Los Angeles a prominent part of the Los Angeles community. Thank you to the dedicated Gala committee for their support and a special thank you to Discovery Cube staff and volunteers who made this special evening possible.
These past five years have been engaging and exciting, and the best is yet to come because of your generous support.
Enjoy the evening!
Sincerely,

Neonatal Intensive Care Units in the U.S. CareNex was sold to Anthem in 2012. In 2007, he and his brother, Dr. Pejman Salimpour acquired Alvarado Hospital in San Diego from Tenet Corporation and co-founded Plymouth Health, a physician-owned company which owned and operated the medical center until 2011.
Dr. Salimpour attended Boston University School of Medicine, where he was named both an Alpha Omega Alpha National Research Scholar and National Honor Medical Society Member. He completed his residency at USC School of Medicine and was the first-ever two-time recipient of the American College of Physicians’ Research Award.
In addition to serving as Chairman of the Board at DCLA, Pedram serves on the boards of St. Matthew’s Parish School, Boston University School of Medicine, the Whitehead Institute at MIT, Healthpoint Capital, and the Cooperative of American Physicians. He and his wife Stacy are the proud parents of three children, often spotted exploring the latest exhibit at DCLA.
Pedram is the founding Chairman of Discovery Cube Los Angeles’ Board of Directors. Under his leadership, DCLA has served over 1.2 million children, teachers and caregivers. With his guidance, DCLA efforts have positively contributed to diversifying our local STEM workforce, provided STEM education access to young minds of all ages and backgrounds, and inspired the next generation of scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians.

Energy is at the heart of everything they do.
Chevron’s success is driven by their people and their commitment to get results the right way – by operating responsibly, executing with excellence, applying innovative technologies and capturing new opportunities for profitable growth.
Affordable energy is a catalyst for economic growth and prosperity. Chevron’s values drive them to provide that energy responsibly while protecting the environment and working with their partners to strengthen communities. Their success is tied to the success of the communities where they operate.
The Chevron Way has stood the test of time. It’s an integral part of our past and present. And, it shows us the way to future success as we continue to develop the energy that improves lives and powers the world forward.
Chevron has provided annual support as one of DCLA’s founding corporate partners, advancing access to quality STEM engagement for all students regardless of background, socio-economic status, gender or race.
Next Spring, “Festival of STEM” will launch at DCLA with the instrumental support of Chevron as DCLA’s STEM Proficiency Champion. This program promises to build strong student STEM identity by highlighting diverse STEM role models and creating engineering and design thinking skills that will ultimately build a vital STEM career pipeline in Southern California.

RAISE YOUR PADDLE TO SUPPORT DISCOVERY CUBE LOS ANGELES
$3,140 underwrites workshop supplies for 20 families participating in Futuros Radiantes. This is the Cube’s award-winning Early Learners program that is bilingual (Spanish/English) and bicultural (Latino/American) for low-income caregivers of children under six. This program helps caregivers to help their children 1) become school-ready, 2) improve reading skills in English and Spanish, 3) understand number sense, and 4) incorporate STEM-thinking skills.
$1,000 brings a Science to Go Outreach Assembly to 100 students. This program transports interactive and entertaining presentations ranging from large-scale assemblies to hands-on classroom workshops from the Cube to schools! Last year, DCLA served 19,000 students in schools throughout LA County, 47% of which attend schools in low-to-moderate income communities.
$1,500 gives 60 students a Science Explorer Field Trip experience, inclusive of transportation. Field trips for Title I students democratize their access to cultural institutions. Each field trip provides a dedicated educator that presents a demonstration rooted in Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Last year 30,000 pre-K to 8th grade LA County students visited DCLA on subsidized field trip scholarships, while almost 4,000 received full scholarships.
$500 gifts 2 Teachers with a Professional Development Science Kit for their classroom. DCLA’s Teacher Professional Development provides innovative STEM-based, NGSS-aligned lesson plans and activities for teachers to bring back to their classrooms to effectively engage their students. Last year, 371 LA based teachers participated in our hosted professional development workshops.
$250 sends 1 child to a week of Camp Discovery, a summer day-camp at Discovery Cube. In summer 2020, we will offer eight different camp themes for students entering Kindergarten through 8th grade and provide vital scholarships to our local community.
