    Dear Friends,

    It gives us immense pleasure to welcome you as part of the MBA@IITKanpur

    Batch of 2015. We know that this step is an important strategic decision which

    heralds the Start of a journey. We are honored to be at the start of this journey and

    hope that over the course of the next 2 years, this will become a lifelong bond as a

    part of the MBA@IITK family.

    Life at IITK is an experience which is sure to transform you in more ways than

    One. We strongly believe that the classroom provides just a small component of

    the learning opportunities here. Through numerous mediums such as seminars,

    projects, live cases, field trips and organizational activities, we strive to provide a

    holistic learning experience.

    As a part of this initiative, we have conceptualized the Mentoring and Induction

    Process. Through the initial part of the Mentoring phase, you will have an

    opportunity to interact with the mentors and peers as well as clarify your doubts.

    We hope that this initiative will replace the nervousness of the unknown with the

    anticipation of a new experience. It will also provide some learning opportunities

    for the duration till your joining at IIT Kanpur. The subsequent section shares

    some of the essential reads, important sources of information as well as a set of

    assignments which are designed to equip you with the basic tools to start off the

    program with a confident start. The guidelines for the submission and the

    evaluation for the assignments are mentioned in the subsequent section. You are

    advised to attempt these seriously and submit them on or before 17th

    July

    E1. The annual report describes a companys activities of the previous year. It enables theinvestors assess how their investment is doing. As a student of management youre expected to

    be able to understand and comprehend it well.

    Guideline - Refer to the annual report of any company. Try to understand its structure andvarious components. Pay special attention to the financial section (including financial statements

    like Balance Sheet, Profit & Loss sheet, financial ratios) of the report. On the basis of youroverall analysis, comment whether you would like to invest in this company or not. Elucidate

    this with reasoning. Your analysis should be within 200 words.

    E2: Vision and mission statements of the corporate are basic pillar for any organizations. Theynot only explained the unique reason of what the company today is but they also provide

    information about what a company wants to achieve. Analyze vision and mission statement ofany one organization and explain basic difference between the vision and mission statement.

    Also based on your analysis tell us weather vision and mission statements are correct or not.

    Case: Marketing and Distribution of Mushroom

    Sachin and Virag are two enterprising youth. They have done MBA from IIT Kanpur. They

    thought instead of doing a job, they will launch fresh vegetables in Indian markets. Having learntof the future conventional foods, they decided to venture into cultivation of mushrooms.

    Mushrooms are known to be the best alternative food for vegetarians. For Sachin and Virag fund

    raising was a serious handicap for mass production. However, the first trial batch of mushroomsthat they produced was bought by Platinum Hotel in Kanpur.

    Further, the hotel placed orders for supply of 20 kgs every day. Now mushroom industry is run

    by small entrepreneurs, like Sachin and Virag. Another big player M/s AshtavinayakMushrooms, equipped with cold storage facility was more interested in the export market. Sachin

    and Virag have set their sights high. They aim to sell mushrooms in a very big way all overIndia. Mushrooms have a great market potential and is a perishable food.

    Questions

    A. What will you advise Sachin and Virag, as how to increase the consumer awareness about thisnew food?

    B. What would be your suggestions for distribution channel for mushrooms?
