MENTORING & COACHING

Mentoring is relationship oriented. It seeks to provide a safe environment where the mentoree shares whatever issues affect his or her professional and personal success. Although specific learning goals or competencies may be used as a basis for creating the relationship, its focus goes beyond these areas to include things, such as work/life balance, self-confidence, self-perception, and how the personal influences the professional. Coaching is task oriented. The focus is on concrete issues, such as managing more effectively, speaking more articulately, and learning how to think strategically. This requires a content expert (coach) who is capable of teaching the coachee how to develop these skills.

The phrase ‘soft skills’ is often used to describe the skills which characterise relationships and other people, or how you approach interactions.

For many people, the so-called soft skills are often some of the most diffi cult skills to develop. Job-re-lated expertise (hard skills) are essential in any profession. However, over the last 10 years, under-standing has grown that perhaps soft skills may ul-timately be more important in determining levels of success.

Hard skills are a basic minimum necessity in order to operate in a particular workplace. Whether or not you are successful in your career may depend on how developed your soft skills are.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARNM E N T O R I N G & C O A C H I N G

01UNDERSTANDING MENTORING

Mentoring is a one-to-one relationship between a more experienced and a less experienced mentee. It is based upon encouragement, constructive comments, openness, mutual trust, respect, and a willingness to learn and share.

02MENTORSHIP RELATIONSHIPS

Research highlights that the key to successful mentoring is the mentoring relationship. Mentoring happens whenever a relationship of mutual trust, support, and benefi t exists between mentee and mentor.

03GOOD MENTORING

Mentors inspire their mentees to follow their dreams. In formal mentoring programmes, there are programme goals, schedules, learning, and evaluation. There are many kinds of mentoring relationships: from community-based relationships to e-mentoring relationships.

04PLANNING FOR MENTORING

Perhaps the most important thing is for the mentor to prepare thoroughly so that he/she feels comfortable in the role. If the mentor is not comfortable in the role, the mentee will sense his/her apprehension and it may inhibit the development of the relationship.

05COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Communication is probably the most important aspect of the mentoring process. If communication is not open between the mentor and the mentee, the mentoring process will fail, as a lack of guidance can mean no development.

07CONDUCT LEARNING

You have to make sure that each coaching session makes it possible for the coachee to understand the broader context and importance of the task. A task is a clearly defi ned activity, with achievable steps that require the coachee to complete a set of skills in a particular area.

06COACHING

The facilitator has to ensure that knowledge, skills and the values related to the particular job or profession has been transferred to such an extent that the employee can demonstrate competence in the workplace.

THE BENEFITS OF

ONLINE SKILLS DEVELOPMENT

Forget about attending classes for hours, sitting in an uncomfortable chair, and suffering from back pain by the end of the day. You will not be bound to physical class sessions when you opt for online education. All learning materials are provided online, so you’ll easily access them from the comfort of your office or home.

COMFORT

A self-paced system enables learners to make progress with a rhythm that suits them. This does not require attending live sessions; you can access the materials at any time that works for you. If you have to work or take care of your home and children during the day, you can study at night. That’s an advantage the traditional educational system cannot beat.

SELF-PACED LEARNING

The fact that online programs are cheaper when compared to the ones held in a traditional campus setting is enough to convince you to consider them. The average tuition for online courses depends on multiple factors, so it varies from one program to another. Note, free courses don’t usually come with a certificate of completion.

LOWER COSTS

It doesn’t matter where your career stands at this moment; completed programs will always look good on your résumé. It will show potential employers that you’re committed to learning and that you’re eager to obtain more knowledge and new skills. You will certainly become a better candidate for a job promotion.
