Why 1:1 Reading Mentoring?
Schools or organizations can improve reading success for students needing 1:1 intervention by:
Using www.readinga-z.com materials that are engaging to both students and mentors
Providing mentoring materials addressing the National Reading Panels 5 Big Ideas for reading instruction: Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary and Comprehension
Offering supplemental mentoring materials at each student’s reading level and pace (Kindergarten through 5th Grade reading levels)
Providing mentors that care for the reading success of each student they mentor. Bluffton University requires their Phonics students to mentor in area schools.

M4RA can:
Improve reading for their students reading below grade level when implemented 4 X per week
Engage families, older age students, community members, etc., in the reading achievement of their students

Why 1:1 Reading Mentoring?
M4RA utilizes:
An evidence-based model of 1:1 mentoring using the scripted www.readinga-z.com Tutoring & Mentoring Packs. This model not only improves student’s self-confidence but also promotes month for month reading level gains
Supplemental 30 minute mentoring sessions 4 X per week for students who need 1:1 reading mentoring. Reading content begins at Alphabet through 5th Grade. A student may have as many as 4 different mentors.

Who Can Benefit from 1:1 Reading Mentoring?
Any student reading below a beginning 6th grade reading level can participate:

Expectations of the Program Coordinator(s)
The Program Coordinator will:
Make copies of Reading A-Z’s Tutoring & Mentoring Packs for students
Identify students and their current reading levels Create student mentoring folders based on
individual student’s reading level Identify mentoring times and then recruit
mentors Train mentors to become “expert mentors” Communicate with stakeholders
School or Organization Commitment
Serve students who need 1:1 reading intervention
Complete and return the M4RA End of the School Year Report
Involve families and community members, including senior citizens, for optimal reading success
