A new semester brings new interns and mentors to the CEL program Following the success of the Winter 2012 term, here at the CEL we are excited to welcome eight new mentors to our Mentorship program. All mentors are entrepreneurs themselves, and are gracious enough to lend their expertise in business and various industries to their interns. They include: Jennifer Jones (Media Street); Ed Roach (The Branding Experts); Chintan Virani (Architect); Jeremy Berger (Green Group); Stuart Sutton (Sylectus); Adriano Ciotoli (WindsorEats.com); Adam Marz (Marz Media); and Charlie Regan (Nerds On Site, etc...). This term, we also welcome five new interns with various backgrounds: Fabio Costante (law student); Brandon Borrelli (BComm. graduate); Lois Li (law student); Anthony Giglio (B.Music student); and Shally Lakshminarayan (Masters of Social Work graduate). In the following pages you will learn more about our interns and their mentors, as well as an overview of the mentorship program. Every intern/mentor group meet on a weekly basis (from May-August) for an hour to discuss relevant issues pertaining to the intern’s business. The program’s success is based on the achievement of the intern’s milestones set with their mentors after every meeting. This allows the mentors to attain important initiatives throughout the beginning stages of their businesses. Good luck to all of our teams! A new semester brings new interns and mentors to the

CEL programFollowing the success of the Winter 2012

term, here at the CEL we are excited to welcome eight new mentors to our Mentorship program. All mentors are entrepreneurs themselves, and are gracious enough to lend their expertise in business and various industries to their interns. Steps to Internship

Becoming an intern is as easy as 1-2-3

1. Have a business plan.If you are a student or recent graduate and have a business plan, have done your research and feasibility analysis, and are confident and ready to implement your plan, you can apply to our program!

2. Apply to the Program.In order to apply to our program, you must answer the following questions and send to them our Program Manager, along with your business plan:1. Describe your education and work

experience2. Describe your product/service3. Describe what actions you have

taken to date to begin your business4. Describe how you have funded your

business activities to date5. If funded, what are your plans for

moving forward with your business?

3. Meet with Program Manager.Once approved by application and business plan, you will move to the second round of interviewing by the Program Manager. If you’ve demonstrated to the Program Manager that you are sufficiently prepared to start your business, you will be entered into our Internship/Mentorship Program!

FABIO COSTANTEFabio has worked for several

organizations including a mid-size private company, a large government institution and a small non-profit." This has given him a broad array of experience that has directly allowed him to apply my education to the workplace." Through this experience, he has gained valuable skills and has enhanced his leadership capabilities.

Outside of work and the classroom, Fabio is actively involved in the community."He was past chair of Pathway To Potential – Windsor and Essex County’s Poverty Reduction Strategy." Fabio is also a community organizer for the west-end community of Windsor and host a blog entitled ourwestend.com." In 2006, he founded and was president of SIFE Windsor – an organization committed to creating economic opportunities for individuals through entrepreneurship.""

BRANDON BORRELLIBrandon has gained considerable work

experience ranging from education, finance, manufacturing, service, and distribution sectors. As an employee of the Odette School of Business, Brandon was hired on as a Financial Lab Assistant to develop a strong knowledge on the use of financial software such as Rotman Interactive Trader (RIT) and Bloomberg and teaching students how to make use of these valuable tools. More recently, he was chosen to work under Dr. Cheung as a Teaching Assistant (TA) for his

Financial Markets and Institutions course; he worked with Dr. Cheung to develop and structure assignments throughout the semester and assisted students with course material. Currently, Brandon is employed by the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC)

Entrepreneurship has always been a keen interest of his, as he believes there is no better sense of accomplishment than owning your own business. From an early age, Brandon learned many aspects of running a business from his parents and family members, as he participated actively in these ventures. After his involvement with many different sport teams both as a player and coach, Brandon has shown himself to be a reliable teammate and leader, which he believes are important characteristics in any business setting. Brandon believes strongly in giving back to his community and has worked with various charitable organizations such as FMJ International Dragon Boats, Hospice, Windsor Regional Cancer Clinic, CIBC Run For the Cure, Windsor & District Soccer League.

LOIS LIMs. Lois Li is a dual J.D. law student at the University of Windsor and the University of Detroit Mercy. Lois has an undergraduate degree (Bachelor of Science) in Nursing. She currently is involved in the startup operation of a BioDiesel Company in Windsor and Essex County. “

I am so thankful for the opportunity to be involved.

Program Timelines

Becoming an intern is as easy as 1-2-3

Week 1: Meet with Program ManagerThe initial meeting welcomes all of the interns and mentors. Here, we learn about each other’s businesses and every intern’s individual mentors. All administration is done during this meeting, including introducing all documents they will need throughout the process.

Weeks 2-16 Meet with MentorsInterns meet with their mentors on a weekly, 1-hour basis. They discuss the milestones that they’d like to reach within this timeframe and report back to the Program Manager after every meeting.

Monthly Update MeetingsInterns meet separately from the mentors with the Program Manager for an update on how the relationship is going, and for any questions or concerns that they might have. Mentors do the same.

Networking EventAt the end of the term, there is a final event for all mentors and interns - everyone can meet one another face-to-face and enjoy the networking experience.

ANTHONY GIGLIOAs a graduate of the Ontario Institute of

Audio Recording Technology, Anthony now works as a freelance audio engineer servicing the Windsor-Essex area. Although being at home in the studio, Anthony specializes in remote live recordings for bands and artists, and A/V system design and installation. Anthony is also currently completing a Bachelor’s of Music with a focus on Trumpet Performance and Conducting.

SHALLY LAKSHMINARAYANShalini (Shally) Lakshminarayan is a

Registered Social Worker with a Master of Social Work degree, and undergraduate honours degree in Psychology. She holds professional experience in the practice fields of adult healthcare, adult mental health, multicultural services, and teaching at the college level.

Her company is called Psychotherapy of Windsor. Developed in 2012, she provides individual, family, and couples counselling for adults in the areas of depression, anxiety, stress management, and life transitions (i.e. starting a family, job loss, or divorce). Psychotherapy of Windsor provides counselling services in various ways; this includes: in-person, telephone, and online counselling (webcam, and email). In-person sessions are provided in office. Telephone and online counselling is available Canada-wide, in confidential settings of the clients’ choosing, such as their home.

ED ROACH & JENNIFER JONESMentors to Fabio Costante & Brandon Borrelli

For more than 25 years, Ed Roach has worked with hundreds of successful small businesses by helping them develop unique brand positioning strategies that differentiates them from their competition. His clients are from Canada, The United States, Ukraine, India, United Arab Emirates and Tanzania.

Ed appreciates working with companies who see the value of going beyond mere slogans and have a desire to sell from compelling positions. Ed consults predominantly with businesses facilitating his proprietary process, "Brand Navigator", that effectively focuses a company's brand delivering a positioning strategy that can be taken to their marketplace.

Jennifer is the President and CEO of Media Street Productions Inc., a television production company in Windsor, ON. Media Street was named “Company of the Year” by the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce and has received numerous international awards for broadcasting excellence.

Jennifer is the Chair of the Board of the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce and 1st Vice Chair of the Board of Governors at the University of Windsor. She is also a proud member of the Rotary Club of Windsor-Roseland and is a Past District Governor of District 6400 (Michigan/Ontario). She has served as an international volunteer in the Brazilian Amazon, Peru, Haiti, Venezuela and Tanzania.

Jennifer is an accomplished public speaker and regularly travels North America talking about Leadership and Motivation.

CHINTAN VIRANI & JEREMY BERGERMentors to Lois Li

After practicing for more than 18 years in India, Chintan Virani, and his wife, Anuja Sharma-Virani, immigrated to Canada in 2003. They operate an independent full service architectural design & related services firm in North America and plan to open their India office soon.

Mr. Virani is licensed to practice architecture in both the US and Canada. They provide services for a wide range of projects including commercial plazas, institutions, motel/hotel, restaurants, community centres, residential apartments, bungalows, industrial designs and interior design. Mrs. Sharma-Virani is Director of her independent company VIRANI DESIGN ASSOCIATES INC, which helps in design & project management. Mr. And Mrs. Virani have two younger sons that attend the University of Windsor who are both elected Board of Director’s members for the University of Windsor Student’s Alliance.

Jeremy Berger has been working in the waste and recycling industry for nearly 15 years."He started working in my family’s recycling business, as the fourth generation in this industry." While doing so, Jeremy attended the University of Windsor (B.Comm) and graduated in 2001, and then pursued an MBA from Wayne State University."Jeremy’s business plan for the capstone course was a recycling company, which is now fully operational. In 2005, Jeremy opened his first company, geared at recycling obsolete electronics."Since 2006, he has created and continues to operate four recycling companies, with locations in Ontario, Ohio, and Texas." He currently serves as the group President and CEO."

Green Processing Company Inc. recycles over 20,000,000 lbs of plastic annually and services customers throughout North America." They have quickly become one of the largest plastic recycling companies in Ontario."

STU SUTTON & ADRIANO CIOTOLIMentors to Shally Lakshmarayan

Stuart Sutton is president of Sylectus – a division of Qualcomm, Canada. Sylectus is the industry leader in web-based, transportation management solutions across North America delivering strategic management visibility, competitive advantage, execution controls and measurable long-term business value across the enterprise.

Sutton also provides his customer base with industry intelligence to help them reposition their businesses and quickly capitalize on new and exciting opportunities. He has more than 15 years of transportation and logistics industry experience.Currently, Sutton is a permanent board member of TEANA (The Expedite Alliance of North America) and an active member of the local Chamber of Commerce Transportation policy committee. He is also on the board of directors of several other regional not-for-profit civic organizations. Sutton sold Sylectus to Qualcomm (stock symbol QCOM) in 2011.

Adriano is the owner of WindsorEats.com. His company is the culinary guide for Windsor and Essex County. WindsorEats has become the de facto resource for those looking to have a culinary experience in Windsor-Essex. WindsorEats also creates and manages social media marketing campaigns for businesses, organizations and festivals. Adriano has been the recipient of many awards, such as:"Canadian Blog Awards, Best Local Blog, 2007; The Windsor Star, Top 30 Under 30, 2008; Biz X Magazine, Best Local Online Business, 2008; Culinary Tourism Experience Award, Ontario Culinary Tourism Alliance, 2009; Innovator of the Year, Tourism Industry Association of Canada, 2010

ADAM MARZ & CHARLIE REGANMentors to Anthony Giglio

Adam is the Owner and Lighting Designer of Marz Media. He received his Bachelor of Arts Honours, Communications, from the University of Windsor and uses this expertise to successfully operate his business while simultaneously developing an interactive melodic rock experience with his own original band. Marz Media was established in 2008, and has become a premier source for audio-visual production and event lighting design."

Charlie is an owner and ceo (capability expansion orchestrator) of a number of enterprises - Nerds On Site, Tactical Marketing Solutions, The Coffee Office, BeanCounters On Site, Architecttura, One Extra Guy, and Augusta Business Coaching, amoung others. He also works closely with several more Canadian and American based companies. He is a founding Executive Board Member for the Central Business District of Detroit and the Greater Detroit and Windsor Japan-America Society.

Charlie guest lectured for a number of years at the University of Windsor as part of their Co-op M.B.A. program, as well as the University of Michigan. Business operations around the world, coaching, as well as speaking engagements, have put Charlie in direct contact with a wide range of operations in the service, manufacturing, governmental, retail, and educational sectors. His general focus remains the value as well as the responsibility of the “entrepreneurial” contribution to each organization and the global community. Originally from Ottawa Canada, he and his wife Jackie today reside in Lakeshore ON with a couple of their
