Florida Southern College Founded by the United Methodist Church in 1885, Florida Southern College is one of the oldest private colleges in the state of Florida. Founded by the United Methodist Church, Florida Southern College is one of the oldest private colleges in the state, tracing its beginnings to a small seminary in Orlando in 1885. The tie to its founding church has remained constant and is today, a proud part of the College's heritage and a bright beacon for the future. Florida Southern moved to Lakeland in the heart of Florida's citrus belt in 1922 and began the construction of a campus that would eventually become a national landmark. The beautiful 100-acre campus, on the north shore of Lake Hollingsworth, includes the world's largest collection of buildings by master architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Florida Southern’s West Campus, now known throughout the world, actually had its inception in the mind of Dr. Ludd M. Spivey, president of the college from 1925-1957.

In 1935 he conceived the idea of an ultra-modern campus, designed by the world's leading architect. Ground was broken two years later for the first building in the Wright collection, the Annie Pfeiffer Chapel. What Frank Lloyd Wright created on the campus is amazing. His original work is still as modern and exciting as the newest buildings still on many architect's drawing boards. It is, perhaps, symbolic that the greatest concentration of his genius should be located at a small, private institution of higher learning. Perhaps he describes it best, "...out of the ground and into the light, a child of the sun...the college of tomorrow."

A grouping of three residence halls, thePublix Commons are close to just abouteverything on the Florida Southerncampus. All three buildings offer suite-style living in which six students each havetheir own rooms and share a living areaand bathroom. The Publix Commons alsois home to Florida Southern’s Greekorganizations.

Florida Southern’s recently renovated Water Dome, designed byFrank Lloyd Wright, made its premiere performance on October25, 2007. The Water Dome features 74 jets powering streams ofwater 45-feet into the air. It took almost 260,000 gallons of waterto fill the basin of the dome and at full power 4,800 gallons arewater are pumped per minute.

All of Florida Southern College’sresidence halls offer wireless accessin the common lobby areas and everyroom offers cable TV and is wired forinternet access. In addition, wirelesshotspots on campus include the RouxLibrary, TûTû’s Cyber Cafe (whichoffers Starbucks products), Wynee’sBistro (our cafeteria), and the Nina B.Hollis Wellness Center and pool area.

As one of the four originalbuildings on the FSC campus,Joseph-Reynolds Hall (“JR”)offers one of the best views oncampus. It sits atop a hilloverlooking Lake Hollingsworth.Community life is big here - thewomen of JR form groups withinthe building as a whole and alsowithin the “wings” and smallerhallways. JR and its companionhall, Spivey, are located in thecenter of campus between EdgeHall and Ordway and serve mainlyas first-year female residencehalls.

Wesley Hall is the first of two new twin residence halls at FSCand opened in the fall of 2008. The second building, Nicholas Hall, is expected to be ready for occupancy in the fall of 2009.Each new residence hall includes 115 bedrooms with views ofLake Hollingsworth, meeting rooms, student lounges, kitchens,and study spaces.

Anne B. Kerr, Ph.D. College President Since her unanimous appointment as its 17th president in 2004, Dr. Kerr has provided Florida Southern College with extraordinary vision and leadership that is enhancing the student experience and increasing the College’s national prominence. Under her guidance, the institution

has renewed its commitment to educating the whole person - academically, socially, spiritually, and physically - so that students leave prepared to make a positive and consequential impact on our world. Early in her tenure, Dr. Kerr led a comprehensive Strategic Plan designed to enrich all facets of the College’s student-centered culture. She is dedicated to enhancing a student life culture that provides opportunities for active learning and leadership; promoting a scholarly environment where professors have outstanding records of achievement that support innovative, engaged, and personalized instruction; and to strengthening further the College’s outstanding scholar-athlete program that models the highest standards of NCAA Division II athletics.

As part of her quest for excellence, Dr. Kerr commissioned a master plan that outlines the College’s vision for the campus and includes numerous facility transformations. These include a soon-to-be completed residential life facility designed by world-renowned architect Robert Stern; a state-of-the-art center for the study of languages and literatures; an Internet café in the library and an addition to the library; the expansion of wireless Internet access and campus-wide technology upgrades; renovations to the student dining facility and residence halls; as well as a restoration of our world renowned Frank Lloyd Wright campus. Prior to assuming the presidency at Florida Southern, Dr. Kerr was Vice President for Advancement at both Rollins College and the University of Richmond. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Mercer University and her master’s and doctoral degrees from the Florida State University. She has held a number of community volunteer leadership roles and currently serves on the boards of SunTrust Bank Central Florida, The Lakeland Chamber of Commerce, Habitat for Humanity, The Polk Museum of Art and the Polk Arts Alliance. She and her husband, Dr. Roy Kerr, have a thirteen-year-old son, Eddie. Roy Kerr is the author of a recently-published book about baseball entitled “The Loving of the Game.”

Pete Meyer Athletic Director

Pete Meyer is in his first year as the Director of Athletics at Florida Southern College. Named to the position Feb. 21, 2008, he officially assumed his duties July 1, when Lois Webb retired. Since 1972, he is just the fourth person to occupy the position of athletics director at Florida Southern – following Hal Smeltzly (1972-2000), Mike Roberts (2000-01) and Webb (2001-08). ”Pete Meyer is the best person to carry forward the legendary success of Florida Southern’s athletic programs,” FSC President Dr. Anne Kerr said at the time of his appointment. “His strength of character, commitment to a model scholar-athlete program, administrative skill, knowledge of intercollegiate athletics, dedication to students and ability to work with the senior staff of the College to achieve the goals of our strategic plan position him as the best person for this key institutional position. He has an impressive record of accomplishments as both a coach and athletic administrator, and has demonstrated a deep commitment to Florida Southern. I am confident that he will be an outstanding leader for our program.” “I am extremely honored to become director of athletics at Florida Southern College,” Meyer said. “I want to thank Dr. Kerr, Lois Webb and the Board of Trustees for their support and for their trust in my leadership ability in this position. Lois was a wonderful source of guidance and leadership for me. I look forward to working with Dr. Kerr in bringing her vision to Florida Southern, while maintaining our championship athletics program.” Meyer, who has been at Florida Southern since 1998, had served as assistant athletics director for Webb since February of 2006, in addition to maintaining his baseball coaching duties. In his position as assistant athletics director, he was

responsible for acquiring major gifts for the athletic department that included funding and equipment for the athletics weight room and upgrading the baseball and men’s basketball locker rooms. He coordinated all of the athletic department’s fundraising efforts, coordinated athletic facilities and served as game administrator for various home events. He also served as Florida Southern’s representative on the Sunshine State Conference Marketing Committee. As baseball coach, Meyer spent six full seasons as head coach, keeping the Moccasin program among the elite in NCAA Division II. In 2005, he guided the Moccasins to their ninth NCAA Division II national title with a 51-11 record and was the American Baseball Coaches Association Division II Coach-of-the-Year. In addition to his national coaching honors from the ABCA, Meyer also was South Region, Sunshine State Conference and Florida Diamond Club (scouting organization) Coach-of-the-Year. His head coaching record at FSC was 257-111-1, while his overall record as a head coach was 296-141-1. Thirty-four Moccasin baseball players were drafted or signed professional contracts during Meyer’s tenure at Florida Southern. Before officially assuming the reigns of head coach, Meyer had served for over three years as Florida Southern's top assistant coach. He also was the program's recruiting coordinator. Prior to joining the FSC coaching staff, Meyer spent five seasons at Valdosta State, working under the legendary head coach, Tommy Thomas. Before his stint at Valdosta State, Meyer was head baseball coach at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, where he coordinated the start of the school’s Division III baseball program in 1991. He served as a graduate assistant at Valdosta State from 1988-90, while earning his M. Ed. in physical education. Meyer was a four-year baseball letterman at the College of Wooster in Ohio, graduating in 1987 with a B.A. in speech communication. Meyer is married to the former Julie Newnum. The couple has three children, 20-year-old Ross, 18-year old Mitchell and 17-year-old Megan.

2008 Florida Southern Men’s Soccer Preview Florida Southern enters a new season hoping to erase some cruel memories from 2007. The Moccasins had a good chance to win nearly every game, yet finished with a 5-9-1 record. In five of their nine losses, as well as the tie, the Mocs had the lead at some point during the game; and in two other losses (to South Region finalists Montevallo and Tampa), the game was tied in the second half. The Mocs dropped two conference games in which they held the lead in the final 12 minutes. Knowing they were that close in so many contests may have been painful, but it shows the Mocs don’t have far to go. It also gives them something to build on. Here’s something else to build on. In the final six regular season games, the Moccasins scored 15 goals, more than any other SSC team with the exception of Lynn. That explosion didn’t come against a group of pushovers either. Four of those opponents finished the year ranked in the top eight of the South Region poll, and the Mocs scored at least two goals against three of them. Just before that stretch started, the Mocs also took 9th-ranked Nova Southeastern to the limit before falling, 2-1. This year, Southern has 14 returning lettermen, including five of its top six scorers, and two players who have been all-conference performers during their careers. It’s a battle-tested group that faced six teams in 2007 that were ranked in the national top 20 at some point during the season. They’ll play a similar schedule again this year as the Mocs hope to close out the close ones in 2008, and finish what they started. FORWARD The Moccasins return their scoring leader from the last two years in Patrik Dandanell. When healthy the senior has been one of the top players in the Sunshine State Conference with 51 points in 39 career games, and was All-SSC in 2006. He can either score goals or create them. Last year he was limited to 11 games, two of which he played less than 25 minutes, but he still totaled six goals with five assists. Florida Southern’s offense really took off once Givi Kokaia made it into the lineup. Now a sophomore, his arrival coincided with the Mocs’ late-season scoring binge, but in truth it was no

coincidence. He had four goals and nine points during the final six games, giving the Mocs a preview of what they hope to have this year - Dandanell and Kokaia on the field together for a full season. With those two up front, it might be easy to overlook senior Garrett Gaa. That would be a mistake. Gaa had five goals and four assists in 14 games last year, and was generous with his scoring. He produced points in nine different games, including the only goal in both of Florida Southern’s 1-0 wins. If Gaa comes off the bench this year, the Mocs now have a way to keep consistent fire power on the field at all times. The Mocs added a fourth veteran forward this year in senior Rocky Gifford, who’ll likely be spending more time as an outside midfielder. Either way, Gifford is a goal scorer. He transferred from Lenoir-Rhyne College (NC), where he was All-South Atlantic Conference in 2006. Gifford had 19 points that year for a team that advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, and was All-State at Lakeland’s George Jenkins High School. MIDFIELD The Mocs have five experienced midfielders back, led by senior Eoghan Conlon. As a transfer last year, Conlon made a huge impact while starting all but one game, and tying two other players

for third on the team with nine points. He’ll be counted on heavily again this year, as will Dennie Townsend. The senior developed into a full-time starter on the outside last year when he scored two goals with three assists. Sophomore Zach Hofstetter, a defender in 2007, and big goal scorer in high school, is an intriguing possibility on the inside next to Conlon. With a strong preseason, Hofstetter has put himself in position to make the starting 11 at his new position. Three other veterans played at least 10 games on the midfield line last year, and all of them took turns starting at various times. Senior Daniel Heaney is the most experienced after an outstanding junior college career and a strong first season at Florida Southern. He and redshirt sophomore Matt Macias were typically the top reserves for the Moccasins, with sophomore Jared Bellingar playing a much bigger role late in the season. All will be key elements again, with a much stronger Bellingar now giving an extra push to the more veteran Heaney and Macias. Several freshmen will vie for playing time too, including local product J.D. Ruiz from Winter Haven. A skillful player from the Lakeland Lazers club program, Ruiz could end up playing anyone of three midfield positions. He’s joined by Nolan Cancino, a member of the Bahamas Under-20 national team, and David Fletcher, who played for the Middlesex County reserves in England. DEFENDER There’s been a huge emphasis on defense in the offseason and preseason for the Moccasins after last year’s team surrendered 42 goals in 15 games. There are five new defenders on the roster this year, including one who took a redshirt season in 2007, and with Hofstetter moving to midfielder, only three of last year’s defenders are back. That means at least one of the newcomers will be a starter, and the Moccasins could have a vastly different look in the back. Among the veterans, senior Emil Kumlin is the only player who’s been a long-term starter. He’s done that in all but one game over the last 2½ years and was all-conference in 2006. The Mocs need him to play at that level again and take control of the middle of the field.

Last year’s Florida Southern opponents had a combined winning percentage of .600 and averaged nearly 11 wins. Seven of those teams were ranked in the national Division II poll at some point during the season, and two were ranked at the NAIA level. This year’s schedule is similar with three teams ranked in the NCAA D‐II preseason top‐20. Following is a look at Florida Southern’s 2008 schedule.

Senior Matt Dean has started 15 games over the past three years and will have a chance to do so on a regular basis this year, as will sophomore Sebastian Haupt. The two are working as outside backs, a position where Haupt started a handful of games last year. Technically a newcomer, Daniel Pulse is a junior college transfer who was on last year’s roster but sat out as a redshirt. He’d previously started for two years at Walla Walla CC in Washington where his team had one of the top defensive units in the country in 2006. The other newcomers on the back line are freshmen who hail from Sweden, England, Canada and the U.S. All of them have successful records at the club level of each country. Sebastian Bergh was a teammate of both Kokaia and Jonsson in Sweden, though he spent most of his time with Akarp IF. Ashley Holmes, a likely starter in the center, comes from the West Bromwich Albion Youth Team, representing one of the oldest football clubs in England. He too has former teammates now playing in the Sunshine State Conference. Ryan Arndt is a tough defender with a good head for the game who came through the rigors of the IMG Academy in Bradenton. The Mocs plan on red-shirting Ryan Lewars, but expect him to contribute down the road. He’s played with the Ottawa Fury the last five years in the Super Y League and helped that team win the New England Division in 2007. GOALKEEPER The Moccasins went into last year with no experienced goalkeepers, but this year have two sophomores who combined to start 13 games in 2007. Johan Jonsson is the front-runner after starting the final seven games. His first start was nearly a major upset of Nova Southeastern and he continued to play at that level the remainder of the year. Paul DiPalma drew six starts and earned the Mocs three early wins. His goals against average was badly inflated by one bad game. Both players faced an average of 15 shots per match, a number the Mocs would like to see reduced. Redshirt freshman Charlie Craig is a new addition to the roster after spending last year at Milligan College (TN). Head Coach Hugh Seyfarth

Hugh Seyfarth was hired as Florida Southern's head men's soccer coach in late June of 2005 and is entering his fourth year in that capacity. Over the last three seasons, Seyfarth has led the Moccasins to a 19-26-4 record. He's only the fourth head coach in the program's 52-year history, following Jim Bush (1957-80), Sam Snow (1981-92) and Kris Pahl (1993-2004). After his hiring at Florida

Southern, Seyfarth had barely a month to prepare for his first collegiate head coaching job. He officially debuted with a 4-0 win over Palm Beach Atlantic on August 27, 2005, and followed that by taking the Mocs on the road for a 2-1 upset of Montevallo (AL), their first win over a nationally ranked opponent in five years. The Mocs finished 2005 with an 8-8 record, the most wins for any first-year Moccasin soccer coach. One year later in 2006, the Moccasins finished 6-9-3 but jumped three spots in the Sunshine State Conference standings with a 3-3-2 league record and advanced to the SSC Tournament semi-finals. That record came against the most difficult schedule in the league too as Florida Southern faced four top-20 teams, all four teams that qualified for the Division II South Region Tournament, and one NAIA squad that reached the national semi-finals. The second half of the season saw Florida Southern defeat two regionally ranked teams and tie another. Three Moccasins ended up on the all-conference team, the most in six years. Last year, Seyfarth's third at Florida Southern, the Moccasins again played the most challenging schedule in the Sunshine State Conference. Florida Southern's opponents averaged nearly 11 wins and had a combined winning percentage of .600, with four of them nationally ranked at the end of the season and three others ranked during the season. Five of those teams (Lynn, Montevallo, Nova Southeastern, Rollins and West Florida) reached the national top 10 at some point during the year. The Mocs also had two top-20 NAIA schools on the schedule, and for the second year in a row played all four teams that advanced to the NCAA Division II South Region Tournament. The Moccasins went 5-9-1 last year, a season which saw them play nine of the final top ten teams in the South Region. The Mocs dropped two of those games in overtime and took regional qualifiers West Florida and Tampa late into the second half before falling 3-2 in both games. Before coming to Florida Southern, Seyfarth had put together an 11-year coaching resumé that included seven seasons at the Division I level with Miami University in Ohio. While there, he served as an assistant with both the men's and women's teams during the 1998 and '99 seasons before joining the women's program full-time in 2000. He also served as the Associate Director of the Miami University Youth Soccer Tournament from 1998-2005, assisting in the planning, marketing and operations of the 224-team event. While at Miami, Seyfarth made his first connection with Florida Southern by serving under Bobby Kramig, a former Moccasin goalkeeper from 1978-81 and a two-time MVP. A

former college goalkeeper himself, Seyfarth worked primarily with the RedHawks' defense, which saw its goals against average drop by more than a goal per game in five years under his direction and record 32 shutouts. That included a school record 10 in 2002. In his seven seasons with the Miami women's team, the RedHawks compiled an 84-47-1 record, won three conference tournament titles and one regular season title in the Mid-America Conference. The RedHawks made three trips to the NCAA Tournament, advancing to the second round in both 2001 and 2002. Seyfarth's first college coaching job came at Earlham College in Indiana from 1996-98 where he spent two years as assistant coach for the Quaker men's program. That included a term as interim head coach during the second half of the '96 season. From 1994-95, Seyfarth was an assistant coach and goalkeeper coach for the boy's varsity team at Centerville High School, a nationally recognized program in central Ohio. While there, his starting keeper during the 1995 season was named the Ohio Player-of-the-Year and a high school All-American. Seyfarth's resumé also includes the title of staff coach for the Indiana ODP Under-14 girls’ state team in 1997 and assistant coach for the Under-16 boys team in 1996. He has coached a number of club teams in both Ohio and Indiana as well as assisting in numerous camps. Seyfarth holds a USSF "A" coaching license. In college, Seyfarth was a four-year letterman and all-conference goalkeeper at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, where he played for Page Cotton, who retired last year and ranks 11th in Division III history with 390 career wins. Seyfarth was a Dean's List student and team captain as a senior before graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history in 1994. He helped the Tigers to a four-year overall record of 52-14-5, a mark of 24-0 in the Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference and a berth in the 1993 NCAA Division III Tournament. During his senior year, the Tigers had one of their best seasons in school history with a 15-2-2 record. After receiving his bachelor's degree from DePauw, Seyfarth earned a Master's in Marketing from the Richard T. Farmer School of Business Administration at Miami University in May of 2000. He also completed an intensive hands-on training program focused on the sales, marketing, promotion and communication process of sports and entertainment organizations that June before becoming an instructor at the Farmer School of Business later that year. He held that position through the spring of 2005 and now serves as an instructor in the Florida Southern College physical education department in addition to his coaching duties. In June of 2007, Hugh was married to Stacey Russo and they live with their two dogs, Moose and Tiger, in Lakeland.

Assistant Coach Clint Harris Returning to Florida Southern as an assistant coach this year is former Moccasin player Clint Harris. A four-year letterman and three-year starter for the Mocs, Harris will work specifically with Florida Southern’s goalkeepers, a position he manned for most of the 2002 through 2005 seasons. During his time on the field, Harris started a total of 53 games between the posts for Florida Southern, the most ever for a goalkeeper. He ranks second in shutouts (10½), second in minutes played (4,719), fourth in goals against average (2.06), and fifth in saves (212). With 25 career wins, Harris also won more games than any other Moccasin goalkeeper in the program’s 52-year history, breaking a mark that had stood for 36 years. In his first year at Florida Southern, Harris became the sixth Moccasin freshman to record a shutout in his first career start, blanking Brewton-Parker 2-0. He posted shutouts in two of his four starts that season, and made 23 saves in six appearances overall. One of those was an 11-save effort against Rollins that would stand as his career-high. He later matched that as a sophomore with another 11-save performance against the Tars in the SSC Tournament. That’s the last time a Moccasin goalkeeper has reached double digits in saves. That game ended with Florida Southern out-dueling Rollins through a 16-round, penalty kick tie-breaker. Harris stopped the Tars’ final attempt (after saving another PK in the first half), giving teammate Asa Pepia a chance to win it for the Moccasins. Harris finished his sophomore year ranked fourth in the SSC in saves with 77, and was third as a junior with 61. He was tied for second in the conference with four shutouts as a senior, a figure topped by only two other Moccasins in the last 30 years. Originally from Avon, Indiana, Harris earned his degree from Florida Southern in criminology, graduating in the spring of 2006. In addition to his coaching duties, Harris is also an officer in the Lakeland Police Department.

Assistant Coach Jason Miller

New assistant coach Jason Miller has joined the Moccasin staff this year while also continuing his duties as a member of the Lakeland Lazers club program. He currently serves as head coach of the boys U-14 team. Miller is a Lakeland native who was a two-time All-State selection at Kathleen High School, and the 2001 Polk County Player-of-the-Year at Lake Gibson when he was also First Team All-State. He spent four years with the Florida ODP team, was a Region III ODP player for three years, and played club soccer for the Clearwater Chargers, with three state runner-up finishes. Miller went on to play collegiately at both West Virginia University and the University of South Florida. He graduated from WVU in 2005 with a degree in Business Management and returned to Lakeland as a coach with the Lazers. He has spent the last three years in that capacity.

Assistant Coach Derek Zimmerman

Another new addition to the Moccasin staff this year is Derek Zimmerman. He brings 10 years of coaching experience at the club level and is currently the head coach of the Lakeland FC 95-96 Boys Premier Team. Zimmerman was a 1994 All-State selection and region player-of-the-year at Lemon Bay High School before playing four years (1994-97) at Division I Radford University in Virginia. After graduating with a degree in Criminal Justice in 1998, he returned to Florida and became active with Lakeland youth soccer. While coaching with Lakeland Highlands FC, he has guided teams to the Region C semifinals in 2004-05, a third place finish in the USA Division I League in 2005 and 2006, a first place finish in Champions Group F in 2006-07, and several other finals or semifinal appearances in tournament play.

WHY MOCCASINS? Florida Southern first used the nickname Moccasins in 1926, shortly after the college’s move to Lakeland in 1922. The water moccasin, or cottonmouth, was abundant in the nearby lakes and since the moccasin is one of the fiercest of all snakes, the college adopted the moniker for its athletic teams. A male water moccasin can grow up to 1.8 meters (74 inches) in length, and though its venom is considered relatively mild compared to other poisonous snakes, its bite is still extremely painful.

BARNETT FIELD, HOME OF THE MOCCASINS

The Moccasins play all of their home games at Barnett Field, on the campus of Florida Southern College. The field is located behind Jenkins Field House, home of the Moccasin volleyball and basketball teams, on the corner of Ingraham Avenue and McDonald Street. Bleacher seating is available on one side of the pitch for approximately 500 fans. Barnett Field is the only home the Moccasins have ever known since soccer was first played as an intercollegiate sport in 1957. Originally known as Pipkin Field (through the 1989 season), it was re-christened Barnett Field in 1990 in honor of longtime Florida Southern booster Hoyt Barnett. Lights were installed (nine polls at the cost of $100,000) in October of 1989, and the Moccasins played their first night game at Barnett Field in a 5-1, exhibition victory over Polk Community College in 1990. The first regular season night game was on September 8 of that year, a 2-0 loss to Flagler. The first intercollegiate soccer game at Pipkin/Barnett Field was on October 26, 1957, when Florida Southern lost to Rollins College, 3-1. Their first win came exactly one week later on November 2, when they downed the University of Jacksonville, 3-1. Since that first season, Florida Southern has compiled a 228-160-30 record on its home pitch for a .581 winning percentage.

Florida Southern played two 1-0games last year and won both ofthem thanks to Garrett Gaa. Hescored the lone goal in both of them.Only one player in team history hasmore 1-0, game-winning goals. TimCooper did it four times, once in 1995and three times in 1997.

The 1957 Moccasins were the first team to call Barnett Field home. In their firstwin at home, Eddie Kalaska (wearing #13 and kneeling in the front row) scoredthe game-winner by snapping a 1-1 tie in the third quarter of a 3-1 win over Jacksonville. Head coach Jim Bush is wearing the bow tie.

The Biggest Game at Barnett FieldFlorida Southern has hosted the #1 team in the country seven times at Barnett Field since polls were regularly conducted in the early 1980’s. Most recently it was Lynn University in 2007. However, the biggest game ever played at Barnett Field had to be on the afternoon of November 5, 1971. In a battle with Rollins College to decide the Florida Intercollegiate Conference and an automatic bid to the NCAA Regional Tournament, Florida Southern prevailed 1‐0 when Frank Hanraets took a pass from Richard Brelsford and scored with three seconds to play in overtime. It remains the only time the Moccasins have advanced to NCAA postseason play.

FLORIDA SOUTHERN ALL-AMERICANS

BILL CURRIE – 1961Bill Currie, Florida Southern’s first soccer All-American, was also the school’s second All-American in any sport, after basketball player Don Tobin had been honored four years earlier. Currie came to Florida Southern from Rochester, New York and was a three-year letterman for the Moccasins from 1959-61. In each of those seasons he was All-Florida Intercollegiate Conference as the top goalkeeper in the league, and as a junior and senior, he was Florida Southern’s MVP. In 1960, Currie became the first Moccasin goalkeeper to post a shutout when he blanked Rollins and Emory in back-to-back games, and as a senior in 1961, he set a record that still stands today with 201 saves. Since that is the only season in which his save total is available, it’s likely Currie would be first or second on the Mocs’ career list as well.

JOHN HAYES – 1965As a freshman from Sanford, Florida in 1961, John Hayes served as All-American Bill Currie’s backup in goal, and as a sophomore, he took over between the posts on a regular basis. After sitting out a season, Hayes returned to school in 1964 and spent two more years as Florida Southern’s starting goalkeeper. Among his highlights was a 22-save shutout against the University of Miami as a junior that was the Mocs’ first win over the powerful Hurricanes in seven tries. A year later, the Moccasins won the Florida Intercollegiate Conference with an undefeated league record, and Hayes was named to the all-conference team.

BRIAN BAIN – 1967Just as John Hayes took over for Bill Currie and eventually won All-American honors, Brian Bain took over for Hayes and did the same. Bain, however, won the starting job as a freshman and remains the only four-year starting goalkeeper (1966-69) in team history. During his All-American sophomore season, Bain set a school record that stood for 30 years with a 1.20 goals against average, and his career totals of nine shutouts with a 1.82 GAA stood as records for 28 years. He still ranks in the top three of every career goalkeeping category at Florida Southern, though complete save totals are unavailable from that era. Originally from Union, New Jersey, Bain was also a two-time All-State selection while that team was still in effect, and Florida Southern’s 1968 MVP.

JIM DAWSEY – 1969The only Florida Southern field player to earn All-American honors was Jim Dawsey, who played for the Moccasins at the same time as All-American goalkeeper Brian Bain (1966-69). Dawsey was a Lakeland native who made an immediate impact by earning All-Florida Intercollegiate Conference status as a freshman. A four-year starter at forward, and three-year captain, Dawsey graduated as the school’s career leader with 28 goals, a figure that still ranks fifth in team history. He also ranks 10th on the career points list, and would certainly be higher if complete assist totals were available. He still remained in the top five until 1996. Dawsey led the Moccasins in goals as a junior, and in goals (11) and points (24) as a senior when he was Florida Southern’s Most Valuable Player.

AHMAD BELFON – Academic All-American (1997, ’98, ’99)Florida Southern soccer’s only Academic All-American, Ahmad Belfon (also known as Junior) was a four-year starting defender for the Moccasins from 1996-99. During that time, Florida Southern had four of the top six defensive seasons in team history, with a total of 24 shutouts and a 1.09 goals against average. Twice during that period, the Mocs had a team goals against average under 1.00, and in 1997 they set school records with 11 shutouts and a 0.62 GAA. In Belfon’s senior year, the Moccasins set another team record by allowing just 8.8 shots per match while going 13-5-2, and allowing more than one goal in only three of their 20 games played. Belfon also scored five goals with five assists in his career, and his 65 career starts are the fourth most by a Moccasin.

QUICK FEATS Fastest Goal at the Start of a Match 10/25/77 Seven players have scored goals in the first minute of a match, led by Nick Koumantzelis who scored just 15 seconds into play vs. Eckerd in 1977. The Mocs eventually lost though, 4-3. Paul Finney is the only other Moccasin to score in the first 30 seconds, notching his goal just 25 seconds into a match against Jacksonville in 1964. The Mocs also lost that game. Pete Schiebel was the last Moccasin with a goal in the first minute, needing only 46 seconds to score against Saint Leo on October 29, 2002. The Moccasins again lost the game.

Shortest Time Between Goals 10/9/86 Teammates Keith Spresser and Frank Stork scored just six seconds apart early in the first half of a 7-0 win over Warner Southern. That’s one second shy of the NCAA record held by Ian Martin and Josh Dukes of Florida International against St. Thomas. Time Between Goals by the Same Player 9/12/87 Okay, so everyone scored in a 16-0 win vs. Florida Bible College in 1987, but Steve Lose scored back-to-back goals just eight seconds apart. Moccasin Hat Tricks Since the men’s soccer program was started in 1957, the Moccasins have had a total of 64 hat tricks (three or more goals in one game), most recently by Emil Eliasson on October 25, 2005 at Southeastern.

Among the 64 hat tricks are a school-record 10 by Alan Grossman from 1971-74. The Mocs’ all-time scoring leader had four as a sophomore, set another school record with five as a junior and added one more as a senior. In four of his hat tricks, Grossman scored at least four goals, including three times as a junior.

Several others have had multiple hat tricks in their careers, including Terry Darby (four from 1963-65); Jim Dawsey (four from 1966-69); Frank Bresk (four from 1990-93); and Chris Crawshaw (three from 1994-97). Some of the other notable hat trick performances: • Frank Bresk was the last player to have two hat tricks in one year,

doing so in 1993 vs. Palm Beach Atlantic and Clearwater Christian. • Alan Grossman began the 1973 season with four straight hat tricks,

scoring a total of 18 goals in those games. Combined with the final game of 1972, he had five consecutive hat tricks over a two-year span.

• On three occasions the Mocs have had two hat tricks in the same

game. The first was Sept. 18, 1973 in a 13-0 win vs. Flagler when Alan Grossman scored six goals and Andy MacKintosh scored three. The second was a 16-0 win over Florida Bible College on Sept. 12, 1987 when Bobby Pineiro and Steve Lose each scored three goals. Most recently it was Paul Sluyter (4) and Peter Andersen (3) in a 13-1 win vs. Southeastern on Sept. 8, 1998.

• Four freshmen have had a hat trick for the Moccasins in their debut,

including Andy MacKintosh against Flagler in 1973. Pineiro and Lose each did so in the 1987 win over Florida Bible and Asa Pepia did so against Bryant in 2002.

• The quickest hat trick was turned in by freshman

Cesar Wilen in 1994 vs. Southeastern. His third goal of the night came just 19:37 into the match. Wilen is one of five players to record a hat trick by halftime with Alan Grossman scoring five goals during the first half of a 13-0 win over Flagler in 1973.

• Terry Darby is the only Moccasin with a hat trick in a game Florida

Southern lost. On October 2, 1965, he scored all four goals in a 5-4 loss at Emory.

• Only two Moccasins have had a hat trick in a Sunshine State

Conference game: Frank Bresk, who scored three goals in a 4-3 win at Saint Leo on Oct. 23, 1991, and Patrik Dandanell, who scored three times in a 6-1 win over Florida Tech on September 21, 2005.

The Founding Father of Florida Southern Soccer, 2007 Hall of Fame Inductee Mohammed Sabie Though he never served as head coach of the men’s soccer team, Mohammed Sabie would have to be considered the patriarch of the Florida Southern soccer program. As a student at Florida Southern in 1954, Sabie was instrumental in organizing a men’s club soccer program, which later reached varsity status in 1957. He also played for the early Moccasins and after his graduation in 1957, took his soccer expertise to Kentucky where he is credited with being one of the founding fathers of soccer in that state. He coached and taught at Morehead State University for 38 years and is a member of that school’s Hall of Fame as well. Sabie was also a coach for the Iraqi national team in the 1968 Olympics. In March of 2007, Mohammed Sabie became the third person inducted into the Florida Southern Athletic Hall of Fame for his contributions to soccer. He joined Jim Bush, the Moccasin coach from 1957-80, and Alan Grossman, who played for the Mocs from 1971-74, and still holds the school’s career goals record. Shortly after his induction into the FSC Athletic Hall of Fame, Sabie passed away in Kentucky at the age of 77. Mohammed Sabie

Jim Bush, Florida Southern Hall of Fame, Class of 2005 Jim Bush spent 30 years at Florida Southern and served as head coach of the Moccasins from their beginning in 1957, until his retirement following the 1980 season. He compiled a career record of 115‐118‐23, won five Florida Intercollegiate Conference titles, and led the Mocs to their only NCAA Tournament appearance in 1971. Bush also coached the Florida Southern men’s tennis team for 27 years (1959‐85) and put together a mark of 283‐209, and the FSC women’s tennis team in 1979 and ‘80 with a record of 33‐16.

Alan Grossman, Florida Southern Hall of Fame, Class of 2006 In 2006, Jim Bush was joined by one of his former players, Alan Grossman, who played at FSC from 1971‐74. He set season records that still stand with 22 goals and 47 points in 1973, and also owns the school record for goals in a match (6), goals in a career (47), and most career hat tricks (10). His career total of 97 points stood as a school record for 31 years before it was broken in 2005. He was the Mocs’ leading scorer three times, including his senior year when he moved to the back line in order to help the defense.

RECORD NIGHT AT ROLLINS Only once has a Florida Southern soccer match been decided by penalty kicks, and it came in the first round of the 2003 SSC Tournament. The Moccasins and Tars finished overtime tied 1‐1, but the Mocs eventually prevailed after 16 rounds of penalty kicks. Even more amazing, both teams made their first 15 attempts before FSC goalkeeper Clint Harris stopped Rollins on #16, and Asa Pepia converted for the Mocs. It’s believed to be the longest game in NCAA Division II history, and matched a 16‐round tie‐breaker by Clarkson (NY) and Plattsburgh State (NY) in the ’93 Division III regionals.

THE SUNSHINE STATE CONFERENCE

Founded in 1975, the Sunshine State Conference has risen from a single sport organization to the Division II “Conference of Champions”. Since its inception, the conference has grown steadily in sports played, membership and national prominence. Sunshine State Conference member schools have won recent NCAA national titles (67 total) in baseball, men’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s soccer, and women’s

volleyball. The SSC is also nationally recognized in men’s and women’s cross country, women’s rowing and women’s basketball. The SSC sponsors championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s tennis, women’s volleyball, softball and women’s rowing. SUNSHINE STATE CONFERENCE HALL-OF-FAME

Julianne Coleman (2-time SSC Pitcher-of-the-Year in softball and 2-time All-American), Buck Dawson (16-time SSC Coach-of-the-Year in cross-country and winner of 17 SSC titles) and Jana Peterkova (2-time national champion and the 2002 National Player-of-the-Year in women’s golf) were inducted into the SSC Hall of Fame in 2008, bringing the number of inductees from Florida Southern College to 39. Nine Moccasins were inducted into the inaugural class in 1991-92, and FSC has had at least one inductee in 14 of the 17 classes since the Hall’s inception. Of the 39 inductees, 26 have been student-athletes, nine have come from the coaching ranks and four from administrative and staff positions.

MOCCASIN MEN WIN SSC MAYOR’S CUP

Florida Southern finished first in the men’s division and third in the women's division for the Sunshine State Conference Mayor's Cup for all-sports competition last year. The award is sponsored by the mayors of the nine communities in which SSC schools are located. The Mayor's Cup recognizes competition in six sports for men: soccer, cross country, basketball, golf, tennis and baseball and nine sports for women: volleyball, softball and rowing, in addition to the men’s sports. Points in each sport are awarded by the number of schools sponsoring teams in the respective sports. The 2007-08 academic year marked the 22nd year of the Mayor's Cup competition. Florida Southern has won the women's division 10 times and the men’s division 10 times, more than any other school in both divisions.

Go approximately 6.1 miles to Exit 7 (South Florida Avenue - toll: 50 cents). Turn left onto 37N (South Florida Avenue) and go to McDonald Street. Turn right on McDonald and turn go seven blocks to the campus. Park in the second parking lot on the right (Barnett Field). From Palm Beach/Fort Lauderdale Take the Florida Turnpike north to Yeehaw Junction (Highway 60). Take Highway 60 to 98 North in Bartow, and 98 North into Lakeland. Watch for the Grove Park Shopping Plaza (on the left) and turn left at Crystal Lake Drive. Go to Lake Hollingsworth Drive, turn right and go around the lake to Ingraham Avenue. Turn right again, and go to stop sign (McDonald) and turn left. Parking lot will be on the left, just past Barnett Field.
