We went in search ofsome

was just how rare these spaces are.

Sure, Hef has the Playboy Man

envious home, Tony Starkes is

happiest in h is basement. But

what about the guy down the road?

I f he Man Cave is the last

refuge of masculinity, are we

destined to live in homes femi

Bulldozers!

We found some guys who

pooled their resources and bui lt

a grown-up answer to the neigh

built his drean1 home from the

ground up and then invited his

family to share it with him, and

a third dude who will turn your

Our aim here is to inspire and

Fo ra guy who sits around

handy with a spanner. After building up an inter-

nationally celebratedcompanythat started lifein a humble digs in Stellenbosch, Vermeulen waslooking for a release. There'sonly so much time

youcan spend sitting in

front ofa screen or pitching at clients, you know.

SoVermeulen called up his

friend Robert Nicholls, acommer

cials director who, like Vermeu

len, also heard the call of the

unknown. The pair bought them

selves retro Royal Enfields and

went on a two-week adventure in

the Karoo. When they came back,

the bikeshad rattled to pieces, and

they'd learnt a th ing or two about

toying with a motorcycle. But

most importantly, the bikebug

had bitten. Hard.

Having noticed howa lot of

guys were buying these same sub

standard, yet aesthetically pleas

ing bikes, they decided that to

rea lly stand out from the crowd

JUNE 2 01 3 15 3

they'd build up their own rides to

their exact specs.

"I fyou think meditation

works, you should try getting into

this," says Nicholls. "Your mind

stops and all sh·ess becomes ir relevant. Only the bike is important."

But first they 'd need a space.

Together with two other like

minded individuals, Robyn Goode

and Jannes Hendrikz, they settled

on a garage that was being used by

a metalworker as storage space.

The building had been there since

Woodstock was a seaside town.

And at ust 10minutes from Cape

Town, this squarish box was

cheap, quiet and perfect for the

creatives to pack their MacBooks

away and roll up their sleeves.

They kept their renovations on

the cheap. First they gutted the

place, removed some drywall, got

rid ofall the makeshift wooden

shelving, chipped away at the

dried cement mounds on the floor,

put in electri cs and plumbing,

splashed on a lick ofpaint...

"I'm a frustrated architect/

designer so I reallywent to town,"

says Nicholls, who sourced the

lights from Milnerton Market,

sprayed the insides canaryyellow

and the exterior satin black.

"We used stoepvetffor the

floor," adds Ve1m eulen, who

admits that while it looks great

aesthe tically, it's not the best

op tion for a works hop floor.

"Just try looking fo r a little screw

or whatever you've dropped."

The barn-style door had 100

years ofpaint on it, so they sanded

it down and stenciled on their logo

- Fury Custom Bike Shop. "It was

dark when we got around to sand

ingdown the inside of the door.

Tha t's when the lights cutout,

so we had to line up our bikes

and finish up using headlights."

The ba rwas made from wood

salvaged from a nearby building

site. They bought a grinder,

sanded it all down, bought some

cheap pine units and then laid

them over that structure. Alongthe walls they used indust rial

shelving - like wha t you'd see at

a grocery store. And after they got

some quotes back on indush·ial

bike benches they decided to build

their own - whichwork ust as

well, they're quick to add.

With their bikes acting as

excellent advertisements parked

outside the hip venues these guys

frequent, they're now so busy with

commissions that they don' t

really have time fo r their own

bikes anymore.

"It's a hobby that's turned

into a business of sorts," says

Nicholls. "We've employed a

full time guy, Tony,who helps

us with the overrun while we're

running our other businesses.

And his dog takes care of security.

Look, the place isn't making

money, and we still have to pay

out ofour own pocket, bu t it's a

passion thing and if t ends up

paying for itself,great."

Furyhas become the new

after-work local, with quarts

being bought from the shebeen

around the comerand kep t in a

fridge under the coun ter. It's also

the perfectplace for braais,watch

ing sport and hosting events that

have ranged from a bachelor part y

to an ar t exhibition.

Any additions? Future plans?

Pipe dreams?

"A boxing gym next door ..

A nice Italian coffee machine . .

No, we'll probably just keep strip

ping away the comforts to make

space for more bikes. There was a

couch in here for a while bu t now

there are just these barstools."

THE FAM ILY G UY

Usuallywhen a man shacks up with hisgirl, has some kids and gets the familydog to complete the picture, he sacrificesa little bi t ofhimself. Slowlybu t surely the

things that are important to him are ushered into back rooms, or garages, to ultimately become forgotten and gather dust. Not so i fyou're Damien Van Zyl, who livesinharmonywith both.

Having lived out of a suitcase for 12 years in New

York, Paris and the East, Van Zyl wanted stability and

a place to call his own. After hanging up his Z-card

and cashing in his las t modellingcheque, he bought

a house in Blouberg which, fo r a while at least, he was

happy to call home.

It wasn' t long before he was missingcity living.

Salt River reminded Van Zyl ofNew York City in the

90s,when it was st ill quite rough, and after finding a

7/28/2019 Mens Health South Africa - June 2013

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/mens-health-south-africa-june-2013 155/174

building that had been everything

from a laundromat to a twine fac

tory, an upholstery place and a

printers, he didn' t hesitate.

"The space had so much

character. So much history. I

mean, this was once a farm. My

son's roomwas th e stable."

Setting up a tent in the middle

of the1OOOm2, double volume

warehouse - amongst dust and

rubble - Van Zyl began his mam

moth project. The wiring had

been stolen so he ran an extension

cord from a neighbour's house.

Outside in the courtyard there's

a cold water tap whi ch Van Zyl

used to wash with for the first

four months of the renovation.

"First I gutted the place, then

sandblasted everythingand re-

wired it. I did most of he details

myselfand got some guys in to

do the messierwork. The walls,

the floors - they're all marbelite,

like what's used for swimming

pools. It 's a nice contrast to all

the darkwood, reflects the light

and is waterproof."

Dan1ien has designedhis place

so it can easily transform into

somethingelse. At the moment

there's the living area, a workshop

- Salt River Customz - and a pho

tographicstudio and agency, SIX

LOVE. But it's still mainly about

the cars, the reason he wanted this

particula r space in the first place.

He lights up when he takes me

in o the workshop. It's got a spray

booth, a mezzanine level cluttered

with parts, some tools, bu t noth-

ing too fancy.Van Zyl is old-school

like that. Kind oflike the cars he

works on here.

"I'd always wanted a spacebig

enough for my passion. I bought

my Ford Fairmontat the same

time that I bought this place.

The two just went together really

nicely. Now there are two Fair

lanes, a 48 Truck, a GMC truck,

some motorbikes .."

Damien was born in Kimber

ley to teenaged parents. There

wasn't much money,bu t there

were stock cars, bikes and the

kitchen table always had an

engine on it. Afterhis father's bike

accident and 27-Club call-up,Van

Zyl became man of the house.

When something broke he was the

one who had to fi x it. There wasn't

another choice.He was forced to

grow up quickly.

His home is testament to the

lessons that he learnedearlyon,

and one can't help imaginingjust

how great a space like this must be

for his two children to grow up in.

The bedrooms are off the open

plan lounge,kitchen and dining

area. The workshop has been por

tioned off using teak ar t-deco

doors. Solid oregon pine pillars

and beamssupport the second

floor,whicli is accessedvia an

ancient pulley-system lift.There's

exposed brick, naked bulbs, cop

pe r plumbing and brushed steel

electrical conduits that, instead of

being hidden away, are celebrated.

The result is like being inside a

living, breathing structure.

On the upper floors of a60s Bauhaus-inspiredblockof flats, which overlook the Company Gardens and are just a short

walk away from LongStreet's nightlife, isAidan Bennett s' 48m2studio apartment

Standingat the door you're

able to take everything in at a

glance: solid oak floor, metro tilesand Caeserstone in the kitchen,

muted tones on the walls, and

then there's the furniture and

accessories, all of which have

Aidan's name on them.Literally.

Custom mir ror, cardboard chan

delier, flatpack desk, tree-trunk

pedestal, raw hide leather sofa

chairs, woven carpet... allAidan

Bennetts designs.

While studyingar t at Michae

lis he discovered that he could pay

his tu ition by making furnitu re fo r

people. He started getting more

commissions to do this sort of

thingand kept pushinguntil his

furni ture had become product

design and a more practical appli

cation ofh is ar t.

The small space celebrates

raw elements in their natural

sta te, textures that invite you to

touch and items that pay homage

to their materials.Visual clues

hint at what type of man lives

here: the pitch-black single-speed

bicycl e hanging from a rack and in

contrast to the feature wall clad in

white polystyrene blocks, vases

from Hong Kong, a Marcel Duch

amp print , large format coffee

table books on ar t and design,

wood carvings from his travels

in the East. .

"Fourty-eight square metres

is prettysmall, so the thought pro

cesswas to maximise the space.

I enjoy a 'less is more' app roach,

so I've pared things down and

tried not to fal l in to the trap of

clu tter, limiting my possessions

to the essentials."

xWHILE STUDY-

ING ART AT

MICHAELIS HE

DISCOVERED

THAT HE

COULD PAYHIS TUITION

BY MAKING

FURNITURE

There isn 't much storage

available, bu t some clever tricks

solved that - he's maximised the

space under the bed, pushed the

kitchencupboards right up to the

ceiling (and adds a stool so you

can access them), a sliding door

that reveals a medicine cabinet

when the bathroom door is

closed, and a wardrobe is hidden

behind floor- to-ceiling mirrors.

Taking a cue from the fashion

world, people nowsee dressing

theirhomes up as important as

dressing themselves. Bennettshas

always enjoyed a DIYapproach

and has made this his business.

"From aDIYpoint ofview l

get a lot of enjoyment from the

process. The satisfaction of com

pleting a projec t is huge.Not only

is it cheaper than paying someone

else to come in, there's also the

bragging rights and sense of own

ership in doing somethingyour

self. But hey, ifyou don' t enjoy

doing it, that's fine, pay me to do

it, keep the economygoing."

Right now Bennetts is doing

just that, working on a hotel, a

clothingstore, as well as servicing

private clients. Use his tips in the

sidebar or checkout his website,

aidanbennetts.co.za

20 WAYS TO

MAN-UPYOUR SPACE

START WITH BASIC ELEMENTS

Floor, walls, furniture and

accessories. In that order.

CHOOSE A COLOUR PALETTE

Masculine colours are sophis

tacted and pared down. Oper

ate in charcoals, greys and

whites and add your favourite

accent colour in bursts.

Lighter colours reflect light

and make a space look bigger.

Darker colours are warmer.

GET PERSONAL

You shouldhave little clues about your

personality throughout. Items

that you feel comfortable with

and enjoy.

KEEP FURNITURE SIMPLE

Every item should be use ful -

that is, it should onlybe a

part of your place if it serves

a function.

SELECT A STATEMENT PIECE

Could be a sofa, a coffee table,

whatever,bu t choose a piece

that reflects who you are andwork around that.

ACCESSORIES Move on to

your upholstered items,

antiqued leather would make

for a masculine space. These

are you r statement pieces.

In the same way that you

dress yourself, the way you

dress your room should

expressyour personality.

THINK ABOUT THE SPACE

Don't furnish to fill a space,

furnish according to fun ction.

USE MIRRORS They bounce

light and open up a space,

and are the bes t way to make

a room look bigger.

ASK FOR GLASS Introduce

windows and glass to open a

space up.

LIGHTING I fyou can hang

pendants they can demarcate

a space in the same waya wall

would, without shutting it off.

DE-CLUTTER Sure,showoff

your toys - bu t don't get

trapped putting everything

into your space. Your gear

can stay in the gar age.

DIY Don't be disheartened

ifyou don' t nail it first time

'round. DIY is about problem

solvingand pe rseverance.

The tr ick is to keep trying.

Don't stop because you've

failed the first time.

RUGS WARM A SPACE They

also denote space well.

Always gofor something

real as opposed t o synthetic.

Wool, shag, stuffthat feels

good underfoot - or on her

ba re back.

BOOKS SHOW OFF YOUR

INTERESTS AN D YOUR PERSON

ALITY Which reminds us of

that quote: "I f you go home

with someone and theydon' t

have anybooks, don 't sleep

with them."

AD D GREEN STUFF Plants are

living, breathing elements

that make you take responsi

bility for your livingarea and

bringlife to your space.

TOOLBOX ESSENTIALS Posi

Drive, regularand Phillips

screwdrivers, claw hammer,

spirit level, Stanley knife,

tape measure and a good

carpenter'spencil.

USE THE RIGHT TOOL FOR THE

RIGHT JOB "Measure with

a micro-metre, markwith

chalk,cut with an axe."

WHEN LAYING FLOORS Jay

the length towards the light.

This opens up the space.

LOOK EAST The Chinese

will have a family of four

living in a studio apartment.

They use sliding partitions to,

say, transform a kitchen into

study. They're really smart

at making their spaces work

so much harder.

HIDE CABLES Useskirtingto

ised and clean. EmJ

cook all the waythrough with this

method, so transferit to a pan an d finishit in the oven or on

the stove.

Step!

Line a large roasting

pan with heavy-duty

aluminu m foil, leaving

about ?cm of overhang

on al l sides.

Step2

Place a handful of

small wood chips or

finely ground smoking

"chips" into the centre

of the pan; the larger

the piece of food, the

more chips you'll need.

Cover the chips with

t wo layers of foil.

Step3

Place a flat roasting

rack on top of the foil

and place the food

you want to smoke

on the rack, centred

over the wood chips.

Step4

Cover the top of the panwith three layers of foil,

tenting it to create room

for the smoke to circu

late. Crimp the top and

bottom layers of foil

together to form a seal.

Steps

Place the pan onmedium-high heat until

smoke emerges, about

3 minutes. Reduce the

heat to m edium and

let the food smoke (10

to 15 minutes for fish,

15 minutes for steaks

and chops, and 20 to

30 minutes for chicken

pieces, ribs, or beef ten

derloin). Remove the pan

from the heat and le t the

meat rest for 15 minutes

before you finish cooking.

6RA Z OR BLAD E S

0Shaving should

be as.tress-free

if you feel like your time

you run a razor across

that 86% of men con

EXPRESS MUSCLEWhen it comes to building a V-shaped torso, few exercises compare to the pull-up.

"It rocks your entire upper body, including

your lat s, biceps, core, and middle and upper

back," says John Romaniello, owner of RomanFitness Systems in New York City. "It 's also

a true test of both absolute strength and

relat ive strength - or how strong you are

for your weight." Bottom line: a man who

can bang out do uble-digit pul l-ups is a man

who not only looks good with his shir t off but

also has the kind of strength that translates

beyond the gym. Fo llow these tips to achieve

perfect pull-up form.

BLADES TOGETHERMost guys ignore their shoulders

whenever they perform pull-ups. "Th at's a mistake," says

Romaniello. "If you don't pull

your shoulder blades back and

down, you won't engage your

stabiliser muscles, and that

increases your risk of injury."
