Jim Jeskewitz sought to documen t the histor y of the villagewhere he was raised, as he was the host of "I RememberMenomonee Falls" on Falls Cable Access. Sixteen hours of inter-views were completed with Jeskewitz as the host.

"I Remember Menomonee Falls" was an extension of t he histor-ical presentations he gave about the village, which were like thosegiven by his father Oscar. The first show was created in November2007 and was followed by 11 more.

These stories and anecdotes would have been lost or turned tomyth without theses first hand accounts. Jims passion for historyand tradition followed his dads same passion, Harry Stoetzel ofFalls Cable Access said in a statement last week.

The Menomonee Falls community spent last week rememberingthe legacy of Jim Jeskewitz following his death on Nov. 17.Jeskewitz died following a battle in the fina l months w ith cancer. Hewas 74 years old.

"Jess," as he was known, is survived by his wife Sue, childrenJayme (Scooter ) Hartmann and Chad (Holly); grandchildren Collin,Jess, Cole, Hailey, Mariah and Malia; sister Jean Arntz and o therrelatives. He was preceded in death by his parents Oscar and AlexJeskewitz.

Jeskewitz served the village in many ways throughout his life-time, and the sadness over his passing was expressed in manyforums and venues. His death was announced by Menomonee FallsVillage President Randy Newman at the Oct. 18 Village Boardmeeting.

"It is sad meeting for us tonight. The chair to our left, our most

senior trustee, Jim Jeskewitz, passed away yesterday," Newman

St. Nicks Day Dec. 6thThe true story of Santa Claus begins

with Nicholas, who was born during thethird century in the village of Patara. Atthe time the area was Greek and is nowon the southern coast of Turkey. His

wealthy parents, who raised him to be adevout Christian, died in an epidemicwhile Nicholas was still young. ObeyingJesus' words to "sell what you own andgive the money to the poor," Nicholasused his whole inheritance to assist theneedy, the sick, and the suffering. Hededicated his life to serving God and wasmade Bishop of Myra while still a youngman. Bishop Nicholas became knownthroughout the land for his generosity tothe those in need, his love for children, and his concern for sailors and ships.Under the Roman Emperor Diocletian,

    who ruthlessly persecuted Christians,

Bishop Nicholas suffered for his faith, was exiled and imprisoned. The prisonswere so full of bishops, priests, and dea-cons, there was no room for the real crim-inalsmurderers, thieves and robbers. After his release, Nicholas attended theCouncil of Nicaea in AD 325. He diedDecember 6, AD 343 in Myra and wasburied in his cathedral church, where aunique relic, called manna, formed in hisgrave. This liquid substance, said tohave healing powers, fostered the growthof devotion to Nicholas. The anniversaryof his death became a day of celebration,St. Nicholas Day, December 6th

(December 19 on the Julian Calendar).Through the centuries many stories and

legends have been told of St. Nicholas'life and deeds. These accounts help usunderstand his extraordinary characterand why he is so beloved and revered asprotector and helper of those in need.

Top photo: Jim Jeskewitz (second from right) reviews a item along with the rest of the Utilities and Public Works Committeein July. Pictured from left to right are Village Director of Engineering Tom Hoffman, village Public Works Director Arlyn

Johnson, Trustee Jeremy Walz, Jeskewitz and Trustee Dennis Farrell. Bottom photo: A Thanks Jess sign is placed outsidethe Rog Rogers insurance agency last week. Photos by Thomas J. McKillen.

said. "Jim was known to a lot of people as'Coach' or just 'Jess.' But when I always saythis community is built around great peoplewho make this a wonderful place to live and

work, you could have Jim's picture there. Jesswas friends to many of us. Mentor, dad, uncle, grandpa all of these wonderful thingsnot just to his own family but to to all of us inthis community. This community was his family. It is with a heavy heart we say goodbye toJim."

Jeskewitz served as a trustee on the boardfor just over a decade. He also served as asupervisor on the Waukesha County Boardfrom 2000 to 2010. The death of Jeskewitzwas the second item posted on the board'snew Twitter account, which debuted Nov. 19.

"You will be missed Supervisor Jeskewitz,"the post said, linking to a story about his pass-ing.

Jim Jeskewitz was born on July 31, 1939in Milwaukee. Jess graduated fromMenomonee Falls High School in 1957. Fromthere he went to UW-LaCrosse, where heplayed football from 1958 to 1961. He wasthe captain and team's most valuable playerin 1961 and was named an NAIA All-American.

In 1962, he signed a contract to play forthe Toronto Argonauts of the CanadianFootball League. However, he was diagnosedwith testicular cancer, which ended his play-ing career.

But his career as a teacher and coachwas just beginning. After surgery, Jeskewitzreceived his Master's Degree from WinonaState University in Minnesota. His teachingand coaching career started in 1962 whenhe served as an assistant football coach atMelrose (Wis.) High School while also serv-ing as a coach for the schools basketball andtrack teams. He then went to Bay Port, wherehe was football coach from 1963 to 1967,the first four years of the school's football pro-gram.

Jeskewitz returned to Menomonee Fallsfor a job in the school district he graduatedfrom. When enrollment increased to the pointwhere the district split into two high schools,he was named coach at Menomonee FallsEast High School in 1969. When East andNorth merged back into one high school in1984, Jeskewitz continued as coach of theunited team. He retired from coaching in1997.

As a football coach, Jeskewitz won 199games. Two years after his retirement, he was

named to the Wisconsin Football CoachesHall of Fame. During his lifetime, he was alsonamed to the UW-LaCrosse Hall of Fame(1990), the Menomonee Falls High SchoolWall of Recognition (2003) and theMenomonee Falls High School Athletic Hallof Fame.

The latter two recognitions were on dis-play at the high school Nov. 20 for attendeesat the visitation for Jeskewitz, which was heldin the main gym. That evening, the lights atSchumann Stadium were turned on for sever-al hours.

In the high school cafeteria, several videoscreens played the final moments of the high-light of Jeskewitz's coaching career, the 1976Division I championship win over Clintonville.

The gym and a table outside were filledwith photos and newspaper stories ofJeskewitz from hi s early childhood to his play-ing days at Menomonee Falls High School

and UW-LaCrosse. There were photos ofJeskewitz with his wife Sue, children Chadand Jayme and their children. There werephotos of Jim working at his "Jess's Place"stand at Falls Fest and in numerous volunteer

activities. As a volunteer, Jeskewitz was involved

with the Optimist Club of Menomonee Falls,Falls Fest, the Menomonee Falls and St. Agnesfood pantries, Leadership Menomonee Fallsand the Menomonee Falls Historical SocietyBoard.

Jim is a legend in our community for histireless work with so many groups and organ-izations, Stoetzel said.

Stoetzel noted that he and Jeskewitz wereworking on a reunion show for I Remember

of Menomonee Falls. He said that show willgo on, with a new host.

Finding someone to fill his shoes may bemost difficult as he was one of a kind,Stoetzel said.

Among those at the visitation were peoplewhose lives were touched by Jeskewitz inmany of the roles he served the community including his co-workers in the school district, those he coached and taught, and those whogot to know Jeskewitz in the years after hisemployment with the district. All have theirmemories of the man which they took the timeto recall and express to others during the pastweek.

"Jim regularly exhibited the highest levelof dedication, class, integrity and kindness in

all of his endeavors. He is a shining exampleof a lifetime commitment to ones community. To know Jim was to love Jim. Whether it was asmile, joke or handshake, Jim had a way withpeople," the School District of Menomonee

Falls said in a statement. "We as a s chool dis-trict and community will miss Jim dearly, andour thoughts are with Jims family."

The final words of a program at the visita-tion are a quote from Jeskewitz: "It was agreat journey, thanks for the memories."

In many ways, those in the communitysought to express their appreciation. Outsidethe offices of the Rog Rogers insuranceagency last week was a sign with two words:

    "Thanks Jess."

Im just proud of the guys, simple as that,Germantown Coach Brian Rushmer said afterthe title match.

In the first game Germantown held a 14-10 lead but Marquette went on a 5-1 run totake a 15-14 lead. After the teams tradedpoints, Germantown went on a 3-1 run to take

a 19-17 lead. Germantown stayed in the leadthe rest of the way.

In the second game the teams were tied at19-19 when Marquette scored six of the finalseven points to even the match.

In the third game Germantown held a 15-9 lead but the Hilltoppers rallied and a tip killtied the score at 17-17, prompting Rushmer tocall time out. The Warhawks then scored thenext three points, prompting Marquette CoachEric Sullivan to call time out.

Germantown held a 24-20 lead butMarquette scored the next two points, leadingto another Germantown time out. Marquette

scored one more point before Jon Averkampsealed the game win with a tip.Marquette took control of the four th game,

as the Hilltoppers held a three-to-five pointlead throughout the set. Germantown ralliedfrom a 24-20 deficit by scoring three straightpoints before Marquette scored the last pointto force the fifth game tiebreaker.

The teams were tied at 12-12 after a killattempt by Marquette went out of bounds.Following a Marquette time out, the

Hilltoppers scored the final three points for thetitle.

Theres a lot of good players on that

team, Rushmer said of Marquette.Averkamp led Germantown in the matchwith 22 kills.

The seniors on the team Averkamp, JakeShowalter, Jacob Reynolds, Troy Thompsenand Brett Dzik were part of a team thatadvanced to its first title match and thirdstraight appearance at the state tournament.Averkamp and Showalter started all fouryears.

Its a group Ill never forget, Rushmersaid of the seniors.

Germantown opened the tournament witha 26-28, 25-27, 25-18, 25-15, 15-11 win overMiddleton in the quarterfinal Nov. 15. After

Afterwards, middle hitter Luke Deubler said

the team made approximately 25 mistakes dur-ing the first two games. The focus after t he sec-ond game was on having Germantown play itsgame.

If we play our game well definitely win,Deubler said.

Deubler added that the one adjustmentinvolved having the back row players read theMiddletons approach for possible tips.

Rushmer said the key to the third game wascoming out strong, as Germantown held the

lead for most of the third game, which then car-ried into the fourth game.

Germantown had to rally from behind less

than 15 hours later, taking the court for a noonmatch against Waukesha Catholic Memorialin the semifinal Nov. 16. Germantown won 23-25, 18-25, 25-14, 25-18, 15-13, Germantownopened a 3-1 lead in the first game but theCrusaders erased the deficit and held the leadfor most of the game, as a kill by Jon Rymersecured the first game for Catholic Memorial. The Crusaders then broke open a close secondgame by scoring six of the final seven points.

Germantown broke the third game openwith a six-point run that gave the Warhawks a10-5 lead. Germantown then scored eight of

the final nine points to force the fifth game. Theteams were tied in the third game whenGermantown scored the final two points toadvance to the title game.
