Dual-Boot removal Procedures - Remove Windows or Linux

Introduction

Many users decide to take a look at Linux and load it on their PC alongside Windows in a dualboot arrangement.

Having installed Linux in a dual boot arrangement users may have a positive or negativeexperience with Linux. !ome of these may later on decide to uninstall " remove Linux. #thersmay decide to uninstall " remove Windows. $here will obviously be others who decide to keepboth to have the benefit of both worlds. $his presents the first two groups of people with aproblem leading to the %uestion how do & remove....'

$his procedure attempts to help the readers understand how to remove the unwanted #! fromtheir PC.

& have excluded all Windows upto Win() and Win*$ from consideration due to obsolesence.& have also excluded WinM+ as & have a poor opinion of it and conse%uently have littleexperience of it.

However in general the procedures for Win(, should apply e%ually to Win() and WinM+.

!imilarly the procedures for Win-P should apply to Win/ and Win*$. $here may be a few

minor differences.

$he repair procedures can be understood in more detail if you get a basic understanding of howWindows and Linux 0oots up. 1 basic understanding of how the M02 is used by Windows andLinux is given in the file pointed to by the link below. &t also contains basic information on theLinux 0oot Loaders 34250 and L&L#6. $his includes uninstallation information in summari7edform which you can use directly if you are familiar and don8t care about the individual caseprocedures.

&f you want to use the command on a !C!& drive type

lilo :u "dev"sda::: where sd@!C!& drive and a@firstdrive in the !C!& chain.

&f the drive has multiple partitions indicate the partitionfrom which you want to uninstall L&L# by adding thenumber that corresponds to the partition number on thedrive starting the count at < 3not A6.

D. 1t the input prompt enter the command B&-M02andconfirm the %uery with y.

E. $he M02 will be rewritten and 4250 will beuninstalled. press exit to reboot the computer.

&n Windows AAA you can uninstall 4250 as follows?

,. 0oot from the Windows AAA C9 and press the 2 keyduring the setup and then the / key in the followingmenu in order to start the 2ecovery Console.

(. !elect your Windows AAA installation from the list andenter the administrator password.

$o get over this problem you need to remove the Linux 0ootloader from the M02.$o do this follow the same procedure as the one defined abovefor removing the 4250 boot loader.

2. 9elete the Linux Partitions

$his is an area that people often have difficulty with. Particularly whenyou have Linux partitions that are contained in the extended partition.$here are a number of different ways of deleting partitions and youneed to be aware of them in order to use the one that mostappropriately fits your given case. !ome are complex and some simple.!elect the simpler procedure if it works to minimise the steps you haveto go through.

*ote+$he Windows partitions can either be deleted using the procedureabove or used as is as a B1$= storage area for Linux.&f you delete the partitions then you can use the Linux fdisk facility to setup new Linux partitions.
