MEN’S SOCCER The Hinds men’s soccer program, established in 1981, is one of the oldest collegiate soccer programs in Mississippi. Tom Shepherd coached the men’s soccer program from 1981-1999 and Doug Williams has led the program since the 2000 season. The soccer program has been very successful over the years, capturing numerous conference and regional championships. Head Coach Doug Williams, a Mississippi native, played soccer at Hinds Community College before moving on to play at the University of Mobile in 1995. He went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Coaching/Sports Administration from the University of Southern Mississippi. Under the leadership of Coach Williams the Hinds men’s soccer team has won over 75 percent of their matches and has won nine conference championships. Coach Williams has a USSF B License, National Youth Diploma, and a Goalkeeping License. He also has an NSCAA Advanced National Diploma and a Dutch Advanced Tactics Certificate. He has been named conference and region Coach of the Year on multiple occasions. WOMEN’S SOCCER Emily Homan replaced Marcille McLendon as Hinds women’s soccer coach in 2016. Homan comes to Raymond after a two-year stint as the women’s soccer assistant coach at Jackson State University, where she helped lead the Lady Tigers to an 11-7-2 overall mark and second place finish in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) in 2015. She also helped JSU to a 9-9-3 overall record and a semifinal finish in the 2014 SWAC tournament. Prior to her arrival at JSU, Homan served as an assistant coach with the Upper Cumberland United Soccer Club in Cookeville, Tennessee, where she worked with the under U17 girls (from 2011-13) before working with the U14 girls in the spring of 2014. In 2011, she helped lead the U17 team to the Tennessee Division III state club semi-finals. Homan played collegiate soccer at Tennessee Tech University, where she was a key contributor in 40 games over three seasons before suffering a career ending injury. As a freshman, she played in 19 games with three starts, logging 710 minutes of playing time. Her sophomore season was limited to a mere two games before Homan came down with a season-ending knee injury. The injury did not slow her down in the classroom, however, as Homan was named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll in 2010. Homan returned to the playing field in 2011, where she competed in 18 contests and started three of them. Homan, a resident of Jackson, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in communications from TTU in 2014. It will promote a love for the game, teach proper technique, and teach the athletes how to use the appropriate tactics. One of the most important factors in youth soccer development is that the young athletes fall in love with the game of soccer. We at Hinds believe that there is only one reason that young children play soccer and that is because soccer is fun. If this theme of having fun can be nurtured throughout the development of skills and tactics, these athletes will work harder and enjoy the game to its fullest potential. We will also put a major emphasis on technique training. One of the major differences between professional and amateur athletes is technique. We will teach technique by playing games that require the athletes to focus on particular skills. These games are both self-motivating and much more productive than standing in lines doing drills. Throughout the week, we will also be demonstrating to the athletes how to productively work on their skills at home. Finally, we will focus on tactics. Tactics are the decisions the athletes make during the game. Tactical training requires a high work rate to properly reproduce realistic game situations. Therefore, most of the tactical training will be done either indoors or outdoors early in the morning. We truly believe that if in one week we can foster a love for the game, teach proper technique and teach the tactics of attack, defense, and transition we will have hosted a very successful camp.
