““The portrayal of men in art and design has evolved over the years in many ways. One theme I have observed is that masculinity in fashion has gone from embellishment and decorative clothing to sleek and simple attire.”

Benin Culture

• In Benin culture the more clothes you wore the more wealthy you were. It showed you could afford this type of clothing.

14th and 15th Century

• In the 14th and 15th century men wore less embellished clothing. There is no decorative necklaces and the outer coats are much more subtle.

20th Century

• Masculine male wore suits and top hats to shoe that they were wealthy and well-off. Penguin tales and tuxedos were very popular during this time.

• Throughout history masculinity within fashion has evolved from Benin culture in where characteristics such as embellishment existed, to the 21st Century were more muscular and physical traits were shown in male clothing.
