Born in 1989, Adu left Ghana in 1997 after his mother won the green card lottery, which grants permanent residence to randomly selected applicants from certain countries. He settled in Maryland and signed with Major League Soccer at the age of 14. He plays for D.C. United. He signed a $1 million endorsement deal with Nike in 2003.

Born in 1937, Albright immigrated to the U.S. in 1948 and studied at Wellesley College and Columbia University. She served at the 64th Secretary of State from 1997-2001 and was the first woman to hold that job.

Born in Latvia (1948), which was part of Soviet Union, Baryshnikov debuted with the Kirov Ballet in 1966. He defected to the West in 1974 while on tour in Canada. He danced for the American Ballet Theatre and the New York City Ballet. He is widely considered to be the greatest living male dancer.

Born in 1973, Brin is a computer scientist and internet entrepreneur who co-founded Google. He immigrated to the U.S. with his family when he was 6 years old. He studied at the University of Maryland where he earned degrees in mathematics and computer science.

He currently lives in Los Altos, California and is estimated to be worth $30 billion.

Born in 1961, Fox moved to the U.S. age age 18 to pursue an acting career. He rose to fame as Alex P. Keaton in the sitcom Family Ties. He starred in many films, most famously Back to the Future. Diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, he has become an outspoken advocateof embryonic stem cell research.

Born in 1946, Martinez immigrated to the U.S. ate age 15 as part of Operation Peter Pan, in which the Catholic church and U.S. government cooperated to bring Cuban children to the U.S. He settled in Florida and served as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development from 2001-2004. He was elected as a U.S. senator in 2004.

Born in 1967, Mathews immigrated to the U.S. in 1986 to avoid compulsory military service under the apartheid regime. He settled in Virginia and worked as a bartender. He began touring colleges with the Dave Matthews Band. The band earned $60.4 million in 2014. Mathews has won two Grammy awards.

Born in 1966 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Motumbo came to the U.S. on an academic scholarship in 1985. He knew almost no English. He attended Georgetown University and interned for the U.S. Congress and the World Bank. He was drafted by the Denver Nuggets and played for the Houston Rockets. He is known for his humanitarian work.

Born in 1931, Murdock inherited an Australian newspaper at the age of 23 and expanded into British and U.S. media. He owns the New York Post and the Chicago Sun-Times. He also owns the Fox film studio, broadcast network and cable news station. His net worth is $9 billion.

Born in 1981 in Jerusalem. Her parents had met at Ohio State University where they were students. In 1984, the family moved to Washington D.C. An early interest in acting and theater led Portman to attend summer camps. She attended Harvard University and obtained a degree in psychology. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in Black Swan.

Born in Austria in 1947, Schwarenegger moved to the U.S. in his 20s after winning the body-building title Mr. Universe. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin and became a movie star, best known for the Termninator trilogy.

He was elected governor of California in 2003.

Born in 1936, Shalikashvili immigrated with his family in 1952 and settled in Illinois. He was drafted into the army after college in 1958. He rose to become NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander for Europe and later became the 13th Joint Chiefs of Staff, the principal military adviser to the president.

Born in 1968, Sosa started playing baseball at age 14.He came to the U.S. in 1986 to play minor league baseball. He played for several teams including the Chicago Cubs. He ended his last season in 2005 with 588 career home runs.

Born in 1975, Theron worked as a model in Milan and New York during her teenage years. She moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting. She has starred in several movies and won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in Monster.

Born in 1928. Wiesel was deported by the Nazis to Auschwitz in 1944. After the war, he was placed in a French orphanage. He moved to New York in 1955 as correspondent for an Israeli newspaper. He is the author if more than 50 books, many of them dealing with the Holocaust and Judaism. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986 for his efforts to fight violence and racism.
