Through seven games, the Memphis bullpen hadn’t posted an ERA under 4.00 since the 2008 season (3.29) prior to the start this season. Overall, the 2013 pitching staff has a 2.11 ERA, the best ERA among stats available dating back to 2008.

The Tiger pitching staff has started strong this season by attacking the strike zone. Having allowed 21 walks thus far, Memphis boasts a 3.43 strikeout to walk ratio. At this same point in last season (thru seven games), the U of M had a 2.14 strikeout to walk ratio.

QUARTET OF LEFTIES

Memphis has started a left-handed pitcher in all seven games this season. Looking at every Division I baseball squad, the Tigers are one of only three teams to have lefties start every game this season. California has started southpaws in their first eight games and Kentucky has started lefties in all six con-tests. Only 12 other teams have started three lefties this year, but in their fourth game, a right-hander took the hill.

DOUBLE TROUBLE

Drew Griffin is off to a hot start in his Tiger career as he has four doubles in seven games. With the four doubles, Griffin ranks tied for second among C-USA players. Three of his four doubles have been RBI dou-bles.

IRONMAN

Shortstop Ethan Gross made his 100th career start in the season opener last week and his 100th consec-utive start on Sunday against Missouri. If Gross starts each game this season he could break the record for consecutive games started, which is held by Mike Dlugach (149). Gross has started every game since March 26, 2011 against East Carolina, the second game of the doubleheader.

The Tigers played 22 nail biters last season and sported a 10-12 record in games decided by two runs or less. Memphis won 12-of-15 games down the stretch run last season and in those games, the Ti-gers were 8-2. STICK IT TO CANCER

This season, Tiger baseball has teamed up with The Cure Baseball, to create awareness about cancer through the game of baseball. The Tigers are taking part in the Stick It To Cancer Campaign by plac-

ing The Cure Baseball’s Logo sticker on the back of their batting helmets. The Tigers wear this sticker as a visual sign of support for every man, woman and child battling any and all types of cancer. The Cure Baseball is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organiza-tion with a goal of raising cancer awareness through the game of baseball. You can read more about the organization by visiting TheCureBaseball.org.

NEW STICKS AT THE PLATE

Memphis is one of two teams at the NCAA Divi-sion I level to use “Axe Bats”. Axe is an entirely new concept for bats, built on the fact that the old, round knob does not help the hitter. The patented Axe handle puts the bat in your fingertips for a consistent swing plane and a freer release.

FREEBIE STATS

Head Coach Daron Schoenrock employs the “freebie” award for each game. This season, each set of games notes will keep an eye on the freebie award. The categories of the freebie award are listed below with record in those games.
