TAFSEER BAQARAH Ayat 2/170

Every aspect of Kalamullah is rewarded whether you are reading it, memorizing , researching

it , teaching it .

Recoup :

2/168 – 169 was about shaitan. 2/165-167 was about People who will dispute between the followers

& those whom they follow blindly. Their dispute with each other in the Day of Judgement was related.

Behind all the disputes are shaitan. Allah hence mention about life & about doing/eating/drinking

only halal so that you can do ibadah as best as you can. Allah then point out to us about the plot of

shaitan – & not to follow shaitan because the people following shaitan is shaitan . This will end up like

a chain of shaitans . The chain leads to the source which is shaitan .

Allah said do not follow the footsteps of shaitan , for he is your enemy & he commands you to do evil &

fahsha. And you are not to say something against Allah. And not to say (that Allah said something)

whereas Allah did not (say it).

2/170 is about following too .

2/170 :

وإذا # ل م وا أ*زل ٱ. ? ٱ12 * A أ@ #وا ل *دون ءاء* Cو ـE 1ون C ؤھم)١٧٠( أوو (ن ءا

When it is said to them: “Follow what Allâh has sent down.” They say: “Nay! We shall follow

what we found our fathers following.” (Would they do that!) even though their fathers did

not understand anything nor were they guided? (170)

This Ayat has connection with previous Ayats like a chain. After telling us not to follow footsteps of

shaitan, etc , this Ayat is also about following .

Allah starts with : Allah mention م about the disbelievers (When it is said to them) وإذا # ل

who will come on the Day of Judgement to face the torment . Allah is not unjust in putting them in

Hellfire . In their life , their attitude “When it is said to them” / م وإذا ل # was as follows :

ل # is passive ie somebody ( Messenger , righteous people, anyone ) adviced them . Allah guide one

person different than another – may be through a friend, a book, a teacher , etc. The important factor is

that you are guided – not the tool that is sent to do it. That is why Allah put it in a passive tense :

When it is said to them” passive tense“ وإذا # ل م

وا ٱ أ*زل ٱ. “Follow what Allâh has sent down.” this is the message . What

message that Allah sent ? Allah said :

وا , follow” what Allah had sent down through somebody else“ ٱ

what Allâh has sent down” . Allah did not say “ follow the teaching, or“ أ*زل ٱ.

follow the person, or the book, or the author , or the scholar “ INSTEAD Allah said “ follow

whatever Allah revealed “. If you wish to make da’wah, do not make people follow you BUT

tell them to follow Allah .

All messages of Messengers & Prophets never advertise themselves. They are only a means

connection people to Allah . If the message is not taken from one messenger , then the

message may be taken from another messenger . The message HAS to be sent .

وا ٱ أ*زل ٱ. Here indicates whatever Allah sent (is to be followed ).

consists of 2 things :

1. Whatever is in the Quran

2. Sunnat il Nabi salallahu alaihi wa sallam

The Quran & Sunnah are 2 Divine sources which you need to follow. Some people do not

accept Sunnah whereas Rasulullah did not convey any message from his own mind ( but all

are from Allah) because he was illiterate, & he was no knowledge of anything . So ALL that

he said are inspiration from Allah. The Sunnah are all divine , all are from Allah – his Sunnah

are as follows :

• All the he says

• All that he did

• All that he approves of

• His character

Hence Sunnah of the Nabi salallahu alaihi wa salam are ALL FROM ALLAH . So we can say :

وا أ*زل ٱ. ٱ“Follow what Allâh has sent down.”

to the Quraniyyun ( those who follow only the Quran & not the Sunnah !) . We all follow the

Quran but the Sunnah is ALSO from the Quran . Everything in the Quran & Sunnah regarding

• Aqeedah - eg Day of Judgement is Aqeedah and everything about the Day of

Judgement is in the Quran & Sunnah . DO NOT need to watch movies to see what

happens in the Day of Judgement !

• Paradise – is described in the Quran in full. Do NOT need to read from any author on

Paradise.

• About Allah – is all in the Quran & Sunnah

• Etiquettes & Utterances – are all mentioned in the Quran & Sunnah .

• Manners , Deeds - that Allah love the most are all in the Quran & Sunnah . DO NOT

need to take from authors & books .

• Your kalam ( what you say) - Support your kalam (support what you say ) with “

qalallah qalarasul “ ( “Allah said , Rasulullah said “ ) – eg in Surat ul Najm , Allah said

“ don’t ascribe purity to yourself “ . When you advice using your own words, you may

make mistakes or people may get offended BUT when you refer to the Quran &

Sunnah, it is more effective & no one can deny it.

• Our manners & ways in the way Allah wants it to be – should be searched in the

Quran . eg every word in Surah Hujurat can be about your manners :

o between you & Allah,

o you & Rasulullah salallahu alaihi wa salam ,

o between you and any society or group

it is hence for us to search & discover these gems from the Quran. So be satisfied

that we will get the answers in the Quran . You must not lose confidence that Quran has ALL

the answers ( You cannot feel “ No, Quran is not really telling me about manners & deeds” !) . Quran

IS Guidance & this is your relationship with Allah. For all affairs , (whether you know it now

or later) be assured that you will get your answers / guidance through the Quran . This is

your relation with Allah subhanahu wa taala. Then Allah will show you .

This is the explanation of وا أ*زل ٱ ٱ. “Follow what Allâh has sent down.” .

Remember أ*زل means ‘EVERYTHING’ .

The Name mentioned after أ*زل is ALLAH . See أ*زل ٱ. / ma anzala Allah

Allah did not choose to say ‘ ma anzala Rahman ‘ or ‘ ma anzala Rabb ‘ . The Name ‘Allah’

is ‘ The One who is perfect in all Attributes, All the other Names are in this Name ‘Allah’ ‘ .

So it is so powerful. This makes it easy for us to ABSOLUTELY وا follow what Allah / ٱ

says . We will be satisfied & are confident that we will get our answers in the Quran. Allah is

the ONLY one you need to وا follow unquestioningly. Allah shows us Signs which/ ٱ

dispels any uncertainties. Allah is the ONLY One who is Perfect & He deserves that we

وا follow Him & what He wants of us . We sami’na wa aTa’na ( we hear & we obey)/ ٱ

any rulings made by Allah unquestioningly . If it is from anyone else, we may want to think

first , question first because the kalam of humans are not 100% correct.

This Ayat tells us that the One we sami’na wa aTa’na ( we hear & we obey) ABSOLUTELY is

Allah ONLY. The righteous people, the messengers call not for themselves BUT they call

people to only be attached to Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala .

What will the kaafirin say ? When it was said to them :

وإذا # ل م وا أ*زل ٱ. ٱ

When it is said to them: “Follow what Allâh has sent down.”

they were unaccepting of the order to وا (follow) ٱ whatever Allah has sent) أ*زل ٱ.

down) . This is because Allah is ghaib (unseen) They follow other than Allah because they

want to see the one who told them with their own eyes . This is matter of faith . So they were

stubborn & refused to change & to follow what Allah sent to them.

Their reaction :

“ They say “ #وا

? ءاء* 12 * A أ@ ل * “Nay! We shall follow what we found our fathers

following.”

Allah mentioned about people following . They said :

ل “Nay “ meaning they negated what was in the past . Meaning ‘ we will not follow what Allah

revealed ‘ but instead they said :

? ءاءن12 * A أ@ * “ We shall follow what we found our fathers following.”

This is what ل “Nay “ means. The disbelievers do not think first instead immediately made judgement.

They said “ Nay “ meaning “ No ! We will not follow what Allah said”. They were not satisfied or confident

in Allah’s words . Sometimes we tell them “ this is haram “ , their answer is immediately “ No “ !! When

the attitude is such, the Guidance may be CLOSED to them . When anyone say qala Allah qala Rasul

(Allah said , Rasul said) we must think first & do not be judgemental right away . They left Allah who is

Perfect , & His Rules & instead :

A * “ We shall follow”

“ whatever “ meaning they will explicitly follow everything

*أ@ Here أف means “ to find” and :

1. / wajada means “ find” . The disbelievers will follow whatever they find their

parents did . They are rejecting what Allah said & instead follow what they can see ( ie their

forefathers) 2. / al *ulfa meaning “ familiar”

When you are born into a society, you will follow the culture of the society. eg What you eat & drink, how

you celebrate Eid will be what the society follows . This is “ “ / “find” and “familiar” and “ to

find it on my way “ together with means this is what you find when you were born into a

society, you grew up in the society, & being familiar with practices found in the society.

The disbelievers know whatever Allah sent is the Truth because the Truth is undeniable. Yet they chose

to follow whatever they were familiar with only , whatever that were already habitual , & practiced by

their fathers : ? ءاءن12

they followed what their forefathers were following !

This was the excuse given. The “Forefathers” were their ancestors. They inherited from their culture (

how they used to pray, give sedeqah, sacrifice, fast) and whether good or bad, they will blindly follow !

With no Deen in the middle, they can inherit different things. This can happen amongst the non-Muslim

AND Muslims . When you advice the correct way to pray, the Muslims will refuse because they prefer to

IMITATE / taqleed the ways of their forefathers ! Taqleed is blind following of the forefathers . Al Insan

is created by Allah with love to imitate (yuqalled) but this is fine only when small. As they grow, they are

exposed to different things. This imitation is good when they are small . Imitation is not sufficient when

you are an adult . Confusion can be the result. Blind Imitation can result in problems eg in fashion –

women may blindly imitate what actually do not compliment them.

Imitation may confuse them & confuse others - because people cannot figure what they are following .

We cannot imitate religion and aqeedah. We need to search, decide & follow . Find our way in life

regarding Guidance – even for Muslims. We need to search the Truth , verify it & follow it. Otherwise it

will be unjust . We have to choose even if we are born Muslims. We cannot imitate religion . Instead

religion must be FELT, & search the Truth . eg in prayer , what is ihdina as sirat ul mustaqeem. Search

for the Truth & turn to Allah for Guidance. Our journey to Guidance is not a lonely journey. It is with AL

WAKEEL . If we take charge of searching, verifying & acting, we will be lost. Everybody will claim their

deed is good . Imitation will lead to hypocrisy because they want to fit in society . This is NOT our aim.

The purpose of a believer is to BELIEVE IN OUR HEART , to do good deeds from our heart , to learn

sincerely from our heart , dzikr from our heart not because of imitating. This is why Allah tell them to :

وا أ*زل ٱ. ٱ “Follow what Allâh has sent down.”

Because you cannot go wrong when you follow what Allah sent down. When you seek Guidance , seek it

from Allah . You are not forced to believe because Allah SHOWS you the way. Just follow what

Allah wants from you. But the disbelievers were not bothered to change! Even Muslims who may want to

pray , do ibadah, etc the way Allah told them but are in a predicament because the parents & society do

a certain (different) way . Allah gave choice & show you. Allah gives SIGNS for you realize the Truth esp

when Alalh open ur hrt to see the Truth . truth penetrates ur hrt , N u feel good. When wrg u feel doubt

fitrah. When u rley on Allah to show you the Truth, when u hear good , Allah open hrt to rcve it.

When it is bad,u feel it wromg. With Truth , u have signs & evidnce. But e=when they deny , tehya re

choosing wrong.

So now Allah negates their statement :

دون Cو ـE 1ون C ؤھم١٧٠(أوو (ن ءا (Would they do that!) even though their fathers did not understand anything nor were they

guided

guided? (170)

أوو (ن ءاؤھم (Would they do that!). Now Allah describe their fathers in 2 ways :

(1) ـE 1ون C even though their fathers did not understand anything دون (2) Cو nor were they guided? (170)

Even righteous fathers can make mistakes . Only Allah & the Messenger makes no mistakes.

So follow qala Allah qala Rasul ( what Allah Says , what the Rasulullah says). Do not

explicitly follow anyone else – not even your parents (because humans are weak & prone to

mistakes).

C 1ون ـE

“their fathers did not understand anything”

This is not an insult because this is Kalamullah - what Allah SAID. Use kalamullah in our

conversation & it will be barakah. To enable this , you need to practice/act on the

Kalamullah & Allah will make you remember it in the right situation . Recalling the right

Kalamullah during a situation is NOT of you own deeds ( but Allah’s) .

دون Cو

“nor were they guided? “

The word in 1ون , has a few meanings :

/ ‘AQL is to / tie camel so it does not get lost. is to tie yourself so

you do not do wrong . is always thinking to do it or not. Have understanding to tie self

so we do not burn

/ Aql also means / Al Husn = fortress

also mean / malja* / a place of refuge

also mean / qalb / heart - we need to find our qalb, build a fortress to protect

it

When Allah describe their fathers : E 1ون C ؤھمدون أوو (ن ءا Cو ـ

1ون C (did not understand) does NOT mean their fathers are not intelligent or they have

problems with understanding. They understand perfectly BUT they are not behaving the right

way. They know that this is the way of Hell and yet, they STILL do haram ! The in the

phrase 1ون C does not refer to (having no) intelligence – in fact they have even reached

the moon ! and had invented great inventions in science & technology YET they prostrate to the

cow or they believe they are created from nothing ( just be nature ) !! they did not use their

intellect for a good purpose .The best usage of intellect is in differentiating Truth from

Falsehood . But they use their intellect only for Dunia (which will all waste away at the end) .

You can use your intellect for Dunia but use it to get to Paradise – for Akhirah. This is the

Purpose of Life . The forefathers know everything about Dunia but not about Akhirah. When

intellect is not used to know the Truth, this is a LIE . This is the work of / AQL. The

The purpose of using the ie :

is NOT to fall into Hellfire

Then Allah said : دون Cو. “ nor were they guided “ . If a person sincerely uses his

intellect, he will be guided . Allah hence point out that they do not have the the / aql to

know right from wrong . Nor were they guided . They may be doing deeds in their life/dunia but

their work has no guidance ( they do not know right from wrong) because their work is only for

dunia . Allah did not say this with affirmation – instead Allah used (double) negation :

(i) 1ون C If they are not 1ون , then it means they are / jahl

(ii) دون C If they are not دون then it means they are / lost

This Hiqmah from Allah ie to say :

C 1ون ـE

“their fathers did not understand anything”

When you say ‘ they are jahl ‘ , then even if they are jahl , there may be other possibilities in

them . But when it is negated C 1ون ◌ (did not understand) , then it means not even one

person understand . This is use of negation . And دون C ◌ shows they are totally lost .

And they indeed ‘did not understand’ at all and are ‘ totally lost’ in the matters of the DEEN ,

AKHIRAH. They do not do what Allah want of them regarding akhirat . They are the worst

people because they are ignorant of the religion. ( although they may not be ignorant of dunia )

. Hence the criteria of knowledge of the Deen measures whether a person is / jahl or

/ Dal . Rasulullah asked “ increase me in beneficial knowledge” not to be among the

jaahilin. That is why Islam stress on knowledge , jihad in seeking knowledge.

This Ayah is an evidence to follow what is the divine orders , not to follow humans . eg different

religion they invent new things in their religion . This is blind following . They take a bit from

this religion that religion & they end up with a ‘cocktail religion ‘. In matters of faith , do not

imitate people .

SUMMARY is وا ٱ أ*زل ٱ. “Follow what Allâh has sent down.” & tawakkal ‘ala

Allah. When u hear qala Allah qala Rasul then just sami’na wa aTa’na ( we hear & we

believe) .
