W. HOWARD HOUGH 34203 Pecan Hill Drive, Route 1, Brookshire, Texas 77423 The death of Mark Hanna was a sorrowful occasion for his family, fellow geologists, and many friends. Although M ark’s health had failed rapidly in the few months after the sudden, and largely unexpected, death of his wife, Myrl, he, nevertheless, made a courageous effort to remain active in pursuit of numerous and varied fields of interest which had occupied much of his and his wife’s time since his retirement from Gulf Oil Corporation in 1960. The intervening years provided an opportunity for leisure travel, usually on geologically oriented trips, which resulted in a magnificent rock and mineral col- lection, many of which were prepared as display objects. To the delight of his friends, he fashioned others into various types of jewelry. At the same time, he maintained a high level of interest and knowledge in current geological and other scientific activities. Marcus A. Hanna was born to Franklin Pierce Douglas Hanna and Martha Roshanna Hanna on February 24, 1898, near South Mound, Neosho County, Kansas. He was married to Myrl Marie Klepinger of Kansas City, Kansas, in Tacoma, Washing- ton, September 10, 1922. They had two sons, Thomas Wayne Hanna of Edinburg, Texas; and Robert Stanley Hanna of Houston, Texas; they had six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Mark attended elementary schools in Lawrence, Kansas; in Van Buren, Arkansas; and in Kansas City, Kansas. He was graduated from high school in Kansas City in 1916, and from the University of Kansas in 1920 with an A.B. degree in geology. In 1926 he received a Ph.D. degree in paleontology from the University of California at Berkeley. He was a member of Sigma Xi and Theta Tau Fraternities. He worked for the Biological Survey (U.S.) in Montana during the summer months of 1916-1919. From 1920 to 1922, he was employed as a Teaching Fellow at the Univer - sity of California at Berkeley and from 1922-1924 was Geology Instructor at the Univer - sity of Washington in Seattle. He accepted a position as Chief Paleontologist with Gulf Oil Corporation in 1924 and continued in that capacity until 1957, when he assumed the duties of Staff Geologist and Party Chief for sedimentology research with Gulf Research and Development, the position he held at the time of his retirement in 1960. During his career, he was affiliated with many scientific and professional societies and contributed numerous publications on various subjects, beginning with a paper on Eocene foraminifera in Lewis County, Washington, in 1924 and another on genus Vene- ricardia from the Eocene of the west coast of North America in 1925. Since that early beginning, some 46 other publications have included subjects rang- ing from micropaleontology to salt dome geology, igneous dikes, and a coring tube for soft sediments. Among some of his unpublished works are environmental facies studies of Tertiary sediments of the Gulf Coastal States, structural-depositional-time relationship determinations of prospective oil-gas bearing horizons, development and application of basic criteria for regional projection and economic evaluation of potential hydrocarbon- Memorial to Marcus Albert Hanna 1898-1978

bearing sediments (including reservoir rock distribution), and the environmental effects of drilling operations on fish and other wildlife in the shallow bays of Louisiana.

Marcus Hanna was elected a Fellow of The Geological Society of America in 1929. In 1925, he became a member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. He served as Associate Editor for the Gulf Coast from 1937 to 1950, along with several research committee assignments during 1945 to 1956, including among others, the Sub- Committee on Post-Cretaceous from 1942 to 1946. During 1953 to 1958, he served as representative on Division of Earth Sciences-National Research Council and a member of the Committee on Salt Dome Volume in 1959. He was a member of the American Geophysical Union, American Petroleum Institute, Gulf Coast Association of Geological Societies, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a charter member of the Society of Economic Paleontologists and Mineralogists (S.E.P.M.).

He held the offices of Secretary-Treasurer and President of S.E.P.M., Vice-President of the Paleontological Society, Secretary-Treasurer and President of the Houston Geological Society, and Chairman of Advisory Committee of American Petroleum Institute for Research Project 51 at Scripps Institute. Honorary and Life Memberships include The Geological Society of America, The Society of Economic Paleontologists and Mineralogists, the Houston Geological Society, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

He received the Erasmus Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Kansas, Department of Geology and is listed in American Men o f Science, Who’s Who in America, and Who's Who in Engineering.

Marcus Hanna will be remembered as a devoted scholar and workman who achieved wide recognition for his numerous contributions to science and to the petroleum industry. Throughout his long and distinguished career, he readily shared his knowledge and provided a sincere and friendly reception to all who sought his counsel.
