EPILOGUE

Approximately 13 million Americans served in the United States armed forces. Two thirds were draftees and the other third volunteers. 416,000 lost their lives on the battlefields, in the air and at sea fighting the Nazis and Japanese. Most made it home safely, but many suffered permanent injuries.

The homecoming veterans had red carpets laid out for them by the American people. The public’s generosity manifested itself in housing benefits, college educations, job training, and medical care to name a few. No other country came close to that for their veterans not that they didn’t want to. The large number of civilian casualties and massive infrastructure damage they endured left them with very few resources for their veterans.
