CHIEF & COUNCIL • FRIDAY, JULY 17, 2015 • Page 2

Chief & Council Meeting Schedule

Tuesday, July 21- GovernmentTuesday, July 28- Commercial

Deadline for all letters to Chief and Council is 12 p.m. the Monday prior to the council meeting.

NOTICE TO COMMUNITY REGARDING THE NEWLY ENACTED MEMBERTOU SWIMMING POOL BY-LAW: (Membertou Band Code No. 2015-1)The Council has recently passed a by-law requiring swimming pools of a certain depth to be fully en-closed by a fence. The primary purpose of this by-law is ensure the safety of small children who are vul-nerable to the dangers of unsupervised and unenclosed pools. The new by-law refers to all outdoor swimming pools that are two (2) feet or more in height. If you own a swimming pool that is this size, or deeper, you are obligated to provide a fence with a gate that fully sur-rounds the swimming pool. The fence must be a minimum of five (5) feet in height. This by-law shall be administered by the Safety Coordinator who may enlist the assistance of an Officer of the Cape Breton Regional Police Services to enforce it. Violation of this by-law is an offence and is liable on summary conviction to a fine of not more than $1,000.00 or to imprisonment for a term of 30 days, or both. The Membertou Swimming Pool By-law was enacted in March 2015 and applies to all Membertou resi-dents and businesses.

NOTICE TO COMMUNITY REGARDING MEMBERTOU’S ANIMAL CONTROL BY-LAWMembertou has had an Animal Control By-Law in place for several years. This by-law was passed out of con-cern for the safety of our community members, and children in particular. Some of the highlights of the by-law include a ban on pitbulls and penalties for dog owners who allow their dogs to roam free. There has been an increase in complaints of dogs roaming throughout the community and so we have asked the SPCA to step up their patrols. If you see a dog on the loose, please call the SPCA at (902)539-7722. It is an automated phone system so please listen to the options. Pressing “1” will connect you to an animal control by-law officer.

We have also introduced a tag system which will allow us and the SPCA to track dogs and better allow us to en-force the ban on pitbulls. It can also help re-unite lost or roaming dogs with their owners. The by-law calls for the collection of a fee for the tags but the Council has decided to waive the fee with the hope of getting as many dogs registered as possible. We will be contacting you in the coming weeks to have your dogs registered. If you wish to have your registered now, you can contact Deanna Joe at the Band Office.

We ask all dog owners to mindful of their obligations and to help keep Membertou a safe community.

NEW 4-WAY STOP SIGN Please be advised that there is now a 4-way stop at the intersection of Tupsi Drive and Bradley Street.

POTLOTEK EDUCATION OFFICE: COMMUNITY INFORMATION PRESS RELEASECHURCH ALTAR TO BE RETURNED TO CHAPEL ISLAND IN PREPARATION OF ST. ANNE’S MISSION The altar of Chapel Island will be returned home to Potlotek First Nation in preparation of St. Anne’s Mission after a 200-year absence. According to Potlotek historian, Lillian B. Marshall, the altar was given to the Mi’kmaw as a gift in the 1700’s. As the English and French fought during that time period, French churches were burned to the ground, oral Mi’kmaw history tells us that the altar was moved by the Mi’kmaw several times to protect it. The altar finally saw rest in 1860 and has been taken care of by the parish of Sacred Heart Church in Johnstown, since it opened its doors. A letter of support for the relocation of the altar was sent from the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaq Chiefs to the Diocese of Antigonish and to Parks Canada on this matter. On June 24, 2015 consent was given to the Potlotek Chief and Council to have the altar returned. The altar was moved by Parks Canada from Sacred Heart in Johnstown where arrangements to clean the altar have begun. Parks Canada staff will be returning the altar on July 20th, 2015 where it will leave Parks Canada-Fortress of Lou-isbourg and begin its journey home. The altar will be returned to Chapel Island (Mniku), also a National Historic site of Canada, for this year’s St. Anne’s Mission. A welcoming ceremony will take place on Chapel Island (Mniku) to welcome home the long awaited arrival of the altar given to the Mi’kmaw by the French on July 20th, 2015 at 12:30p.m, catholic mass to follow at 2:00 p.m. Everyone attending is encouraged to wear traditional Mi’kmaw regalia and meet the altar procession on Chapel Island (Mniku). Potlotek would like to welcome all communities to attend and celebrate the historic return of the altar on July 20th, 2015 from 12:30 pm- 4:00 pm.

DESTINATION MEMBERTOU • FRIDAY, JULY 17, 2015 • Page 13

Well hello there! We have been busy beavers within the past three weeks. Here is our first 2015 Destination Membertou Summer Cruiser update. We started off with participating in the Multicultural Parade, hosted by the Open Hearth Park. It was small, but we had fun and met a lot of great people. We repre-sented the Mi’kmaq culture and Membertou, of course! We couldn’t forget the Grading Day events for the kids! We made our way to the Mayflower Mall parking lot, where there were activities. It was a great way to start off the children’s summer. We gave out our promo items, which are bottles, bags and sunglasses. We also met up with 101.9 The Giant and 103.9 The Eagle’s Summer Cruiser. We also gave our promo items at Membertou’s very own Youth Centre, as they celebrat-ed their grading day with a pizza party. On Canada Day, we went to Peter’s Field where we enjoyed live entertainment by the Privateers. Later on, we made our way to Baddeck where the Alexander Graham Bell museum was offering free admission for the day. We gave as much promo items as we could. If you’re not sure what your plans are for Thursday evenings throughout the summer, the Wentworth Park has started the Makin’ Waves concert series with live performances by local bands. It starts at 6 P.M. and ends at 8 P.M. We attended one so far, but will attend more in the future. We hope to see you there! Last Saturday, we attended a Junior Firefighter Compe-tition for Lambert Todd Days in Reserve Mines. Kids participated in obstacle courses to get a perspective on what it’s like to train as a firefighter. Taylor, Koty, Amy and The Coast Summer Cruiser girl volunteered in the obstacle course as well. Amy came in at first place, Tay-lor in second, The Coast in third and Koty in forth.

And of course, we can’t forget Sydney’s First Annual Rib Fest, in which we were the “prime” sponsors of the weekend event. We gave out promo items, enjoyed live entertainment, activities and ribs, ribs, RIBS! We would like to congratulate those who had won, and thank those who also sponsored the event. We would also like to thank those who took the time to come down and enjoy themselves. Rain or shine, it was defi-nitely a good time!
