Commodore’s Corner

Dear members and friends, This newsletter is brief and mainly addresses the upcoming August General Membership Meeting including Nominations for next year’s management team. The Board of Directors and the Committees have maintained club business by e-mail. No boating or social activities have been resumed - and we are all hoping for better days to come. Meanwhile we encourage everybody to follow suggested rules to con-tinue to stay healthy (masks, social distancing and limited contact with people and services outside your home). Needed services, like grocery stores or medical and other essential services, are continuing to improve their safe contact practices so that all our important needs can be met without putting us in danger. It is an ongoing process, we all learn as we go along. We will be inviting you to join our planned online ZOOM Meeting on August 15th. Many of you may already use ZOOM to conduct busi-ness or stay in touch with family and friends. For those of you who have not tried it so far, it is an opportunity to try it now. You may be very happy you did when you discover that it will enhance your chances to stay in touch with other people and avoid social isolation. As I found out myself, it is not difficult to learn. Take good care of yourselves, stay safe! Edelgard Rieder, Commodore 2020

Amazing Facts about Seagulls Seagulls have a strong body, elongated legs and webbed feet. Their beak is slightly hooked and usually yellow in color. They are one of the rare animals that are able to drink salt water. They have special glands, located above their eyes, which eliminate excess salt from their bodies. Food includes fish, marine and freshwater invertebrates, both alive and dead, terrestrial arthropods and vertebrates such as insects and earthworms, rodents, eggs, plant

items such as seeds and fruit, human refuse, chips and even other birds. They are very clever. They learn and even pass on behaviors such as stamping their feet in a group to imitate rainfall and trick earthworms to come to the surface. Their intelligence is clearly demonstrated by a range of different feeding behaviors, such as dropping hard-shelled mollusks onto rocks so they can break open and they can eat them. They are attentive and caring parents. The male and female pair for life, they take turns incubating the eggs and feeding and protecting the chicks. Gulls have a complex and highly developed repertoire for communication which includes a range of vocalization and body movements. They steal prey from other birds, harass other animals, and even take advantage of humans by stealing picnic items. They are adaptable and can adjust to different circumstances, always working to turn the tide in their favor.

Keep Sunshine in Mind! A serious sunburn can instantly ruin a fun day on your boat

or on the beach. Most of us have been there, yet on almost every day in sunny Southern California, many of us end up as red as a tomato. Long hours out on or near the water mean more sun exposure than your body may be used to. Consider also that with getting in and out of the water to swim and cool off the sunscreen will be washed off, and it is easy to forget to reapply.

Next time you head out to the beach or out to sea, grab your favorite high-powered sunscreen and apply it diligently every hour. Set a timer if you need to. If you are out fishing or cannot avoid to be in the sun for extended periods of time without the shade of a canopy or umbrella, consider

to wear a wide-brimmed hat and a lightweight, long-sleeved shirt. Many companies now make clothing with UV protection built in to the fabric. You can also cover up your neck, ears and lower part of your face with a scarf or wrap. And never forget to wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun and reflections of the water.

Whatever you decide to do, always be careful so you don’t end up with the pain and discomfort of a serious sunburn. And remember, in sunny Southern California you can end up with a sunburn almost any day of the year.
