Whew! This summer went by fast. We enjoyed several opportunities to show off our beautiful neighborhood dur-ing the summer. The 64th annual July 4th Celebration drew hundreds to West-morland Park The bike/trike/wagon/scooter parade wound its way from Queen of Peace to the Park led by the Westmorland Walking Band and Num-ber 9's fire truck. The weather held (barely) while neighbors listened to Macon Dew and kids played games and walked for cakes. The neighborhood-wide garage sale event brought lots of eager bargain hunters on August 6th (see related arti-cle on page 11), then on August 7th gar-den admirers flocked and toured some of our beautiful gardens during the Westmorland Garden Tour. On July 13th neighbors gathered in the Park with City engineers and listened to

plans to restore and repair the storm water drainage system in the Park’s wooded area. (See related article on page 6.) We also ate ice cream! Westmorland Neighborhood Association is active because neighbors like you work together to make things happen or because you help fund them, or both. Be sure to submit your WNA member-ship this Fall, and join the rest of us who make this a great neighborhood to live and play in. Also, the WNA board of directors would like your ideas for neighborhood pro-jects that could be funded by WNA membership dollars. Send your ideas and an explanation of how they would b e n e f i t W e s t m o r l a n d , t o [email protected]. recently, RZ & Company donated clear plastic bags with their logo and phone number printed on the outside. How-ever, the salon has moved out of Mid-vale Plaza, so we will not be using their

bags any more, and we've run out of bags! To suggest or provide a replace-ment for the RZ bags, please contact Becky Lien at [email protected] or call 231-5969.

The Westmorland Garden Tour was held Sunday, August 7th. Between 75 and 80 people attended. We raised $80.00 for the Westmorland Neighbor-hood Association. Garden Tour partici-pants said that the Tour attracted just

the right number of people for the home-owners to be able to talk to everyone. Thanks so much to those homeowners who graciously allowed us into their gar-dens:

Uncovering Westmorland’s Past: The Westmorland Golf Course

by John Evenson

You might have heard the story when you purchased your current house. Ma ybe one o f W estm or land ’s “oldtimers” told you how a golf course once existed where your home was built. It’s true. And here is a little bit of the story, as we know it (so far). In 1925, a nine-hole golf course was constructed on farmland owned by Wil-liam Doerfer. Imagine the space bounded roughly by Holly Avenue on the east, Midvale Boulevard on the west, Mineral Point Road on the north, and the Westmorland Park woods to the south. Mostly treeless, this par 35 course had a longest hole of 560 yards and a total yardage of 2945 yards. A round cost a whopping 25 cents. A copy of an original scorecard states, “You can beat today’s score. Come again!” The course existed for 20 years until the post-war housing boom began.

“Oldtimers” remember Minnie Cashawn (sp?) as the ever-present manager and starter operating from the “shack” by the first tee. The shack was the original milk house of the Doerfer farm. Sometimes Minnie’s mother would be there too, tell-ing stories about Madison’s early days, including encounters with the Native Americans living near Lake Wingra. Minnie charged 25 cents a round, and you had to carry your own bag. Believe it or not, the course went broke at least once during the depression era. And, ultimately, Queen of Peace Church was built on the spot where Minnie’s shack had stood. A 1940 aerial photo (see page 5) shows the faint outlines of the round greens. Apparently the first three holes ran from the area near Mineral Point and Holly

I would like to publicly thank the mem-bers of the Westmorland Walking Band for another wonderful July 4 season. You are a great and dedicated group of people and I thoroughly enjoy playing with all of you! Thanks to Emily Hines, Janet Smith, Mary Campbell, Bill McWilliams, Laura McWilliams, Claire Gervais, John Rolling, Mitch Hagopain, Dave Verban, Tony Young, Austin Young, Kurt Meyer, Jon Pollack, and Jim Omohundro for participating in this year's parade. We look forward to work-ing with our other members Lorrie Hylkema, Emily McWilliams, Rebecca Smith and Melissa Weddle, and hope to welcome new members Katie and Cindy McWilliams, Ryan Dolan, and

Laura Ketterhagen among others for the Halloween Parade. Look for email or snailmail information regarding Hal-loween rehearsals in early October. I also want to acknowledge the wonder-ful work of Betsy Hauser, Katie Spels-berg, Mary Young, Boy Scouts, and everyone else who dedicated much time and energy into maintaining such a wonderful neighborhood event. It is a huge amount of work, and I'm sure I speak for many, many others in thank-ing you for continuing this tradition. It was great to see so many neighbors not afraid of a few drops of water and sup-porting this event as well. Westmorland Rocks!

Come Join the Band by Julie Verban

The Westmorland Walking Band is al-ways looking for new members. Our mu-sic is easy, the members are fun, and there is not a lot of practice or talent needed! We're just the right musical or-ganization for busy parents, young mu-sicians, serious musicians, and anyone who has played in a past life and regret-ted not picking up their instrument in a while. I am happy to help with parts,

give a quick lesson, take a look at an old horn. I can also write very simple parts for our songs consisting of just a few notes to get you into the musical groove. We will resume a few rehearsals in Oc-tober to get ready for the Westmorland Halloween Parade. Please give Dave or Julie a call at 233-4675 if you are inter-ested in being notified for rehearsals.

Westmorland Park Storm Channel by Kurt Welke

On Tuesday, July 13, interested neighbors met with City of Madison En-gineering and Parks Department repre-sentatives to discuss options for upcom-ing repairs which will be made to the open ditch lying within the wooded por-tion of the park. The meeting was called in response to the City being asked in 2003 to develop a suite of options for consideration. The current, actively eroding condition of the channel contributes to tree loss and a general degradation of the park wooded space. Additionally, sediment, nutrients, and pollutants are delivered to Lake Wingra via the settling basin adjacent to Mallatt Pharmacy. Three plans were presented that fea-tured varying levels of aesthetic, envi-

ronmental, safety, and construction costs and benefits. A balance is sought in whatever option is selected that mini-mizes damage to valuable trees and the aesthetic they provide, controls further erosion of the ditch, addresses some water quality enhancements where practicable, and is reasonable in its maintenance and operation demands. After discussion, a straw poll was taken to decide if any option was acceptable. There was consensus that a hybrid plan (called # 3) represented a workable op-tion that satisfies most concerns that were mentioned. This alternative com-bines stabilizing the current outfall and ditch with an extension of buried pipe for approximately 2/3 the current channel length. This pipe will discharge into an

Do you ever wish that you had a pick-up truck or a van to haul awkward pieces of furniture? Does your household have two cars, but you really only need one? Community Car enables you to get rid of a car and still have access to flexible transporta-tion. Community Car’s goal is to reduce the number of cars on the road, while adding back a small number of highly fuel efficient vehicles. If you are intrigued about how this works, come to a coffee at my house, 626 Orchard Dr. on Sunday, November 6 from 2-4 pm. Or log onto www.communitycar.com (and then come to the coffee).

Sustain Dane, a local non-profit organization, will be of-fering one of its most popular courses, “Voluntary Simplicity”, an eight session discussion course, beginning on Tuesday, October 4th at 7:00 p.m. hosted by the Sequoya Branch Public Library. The course will allow participants an opportu-nity to explore the benefits of simple living. The course is de-signed to help people better understand material and psy-chological distractions in their lives and share with one an-other suggestions for simpler and more rewarding living.

This option neces-sitates less disturbance and tree re-moval as well as provides a safe, use-able space where the current eroded ditch had been. A copy of the plan is below. Plans are available for review at the Se-quoya Branch Library. If you want to learn more or engage in discussion of

options, plan to attend the normally-scheduled Parks and Engineering meet-ings at the Warner Park community cen-ter. Times and dates will also be posted at the library. Construction is slated for 2006, pending permitting, bidding, and budgeting ap-provals. Voluntary Simplicity is practiced by a growing number of people who are re-evaluating the things that are most important to them. It presents a way of life that helps us slow down, sim-ply our daily lives, and find the most meaningful ways to spend our time. Voluntary Simplicity can serve as a healing balm on a stressful life. Registration is free and is limited to 12 participants per course. The re-quired supplemental book costs $20. 2005 Garage Sales a Success by Betsy Hauser

Westmorland streets were a-buzz with shoppers bright and early on August 6th for the neighborhood-wide garage sale event. Over 70 neighbors participated this year ! For a $5 registration fee, each participating neighbor benefitted from a

bold ad that ran for 3 days in the Madi-son newspapers, had the opportunity to have Easter Seals pick up their left-overs, and received a map of the ’hood listing all the participating sales that shoppers could use to find their deals.

For two weeks this fall, hun-dreds of Madison area resi-dents will take on a unique life-style challenge: how free can they be of their cars for two weeks? Anyone who is willing to eliminate at least one car trip a week from September 22 to October 5 is welcome to participate. To sign up, visit www.carfreechallenge.com, call Re-becca Grossberg at 280-0800, or come to the kick-off event (see below). You’ll keep a sim-ple log of all your travel for two weeks. In the process, you’ll learn a lot about your driving habits and have some fun try-ing new things. Please join us at the Car-Free Challenge Kick-Off, Thurs-day September 22 from 8:30-9:30 am. Come enjoy a morn-ing coffee and meet other Car-Free Challenge participants. We will be on the sidewalk in front of L'Etoile and Madison Environmental Group offices, 25 North Pinckney Street on the Capitol Square.
