I want to help MPP make marijuana legal.

  • Marijuana Policy Project: Changing Laws Changing History

When MPP was founded in 1995, medical marijuana was illegal in every state, favorable legislation hadnt been introduced in Congress in a decade, and public support for making marijuana legal was stagnant at 25%.

As of 2014 and after 19 years of MPPs effective advocacy and legislative leadership medical marijuana is legal in 23 states and the District of Columbia, and marijuana is now

legal for adult use in Colorado and Washington state.DC Council decriminalizes pot possessionPossession of less than one ounce of marijuana would no longer be a criminal offense in the nations capital under a bill approved Tuesday by the D.C. Council. If the bill becomes law as expected, the District of Columbia would join the 17 states that have de-criminalized pot posses-sion in some way. Mayor Vincent Gray supports the measure, and Con-gress is not expected to intervene to stop it.This is a big step for-ward for our nations capital, as well as our na-tion as a whole, said Dan Rifle, director of federal policies for the Marijuana Policy Project. Clearly, marijuana prohibitions days are numbered in the United States.

Worlds fi rst legal recreational marijuana sales begin in ColoradoBy John Ingold

In a historic swirl of com-merce and cannabis, the worlds fi rst stores li-censed to sell marijuana legally to anyone 21 or older opened in Colorado on Wednesday.

Marijuana activists hailed the day as a watershed in their effort to over-turn anti-cannabis laws. Store owners several of whom said the turnout exceeded even their own ambitious expectations feared running out of supply.

Im confi dent these busi-nesses will perform and be a good example of how states can regulate mari-juana, activist Mason Tvert said just prior to the stores fi rst purchase. To-day, there will be people around the country buy-ing marijuana. But only in Colorado will they be buying it in stores like this one.

To have a shot at removing the federal governments prohibition on medical marijuana, at least 26 states must legalize medical marijuana. Your donation will help MPP continue to generate the great media coverage and the legislative victories that will get us to 26 states and will give us a clear path to victory in Congress and/or the federal courts. Join

MPP today and help end the waste and injustice of marijuana prohibition. Use the attached sign-up form, or visit our web site at www.mpp.org/donate. Be part of the solution.

Pivotal Point Is Seen as More States Consider Legalizing MarijuanaBy Rick Lyman

Mason Tvert, director of communications for the Marijuana Policy Project, a leading advocate for legalizing marijuana, said campaigns were already underway to stage aggressive legaliza-tion drives in several states over the next couple of years, in-cluding Arizona, California, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada, and possibly Montana.

It is certainly important to maintain the momen-tum, Mr. Tvert said, But I dont think we can look at any one elec-tion cycle and see what the future holds. This is going to be a multiyear effort.
