August 2015
Beth L. Mitchell, President & CEO
August in Florida is a reminder to us about who’s in charge! Thank goodness for our air conditioning companies for keep-
ing us cool!
If you haven’t seen the progress on the Pelican Porch Visitor Center, when you have a chance for a drive by, the concrete
block frame for the porch is up, and you can get a real visual of the shape and size of the future porch! A shout out to
Capp Custom Builders, while we were cool and calm inside, Mickey’s crew worked ten hours a day in the middle of July, in
96 degree sunshine. We are in awe of the workmanship! We are also very excited about the $25,000 grant received from
the Indian River County Tourist Development Council for media equipment, and bells and whistles, for the interior of the
Visitor Center. Web cams, electronic kiosks, maps and other goodies will help us educate the visitors when they come
through the door. We also want to mention the generous contributions that came in this month from the Tiki Bar and Grill
(Two Nuts and a Clam), and the Sebastian Lions Club. We appreciate their generosity!
Keeping you informed is part of our mission and I want to share a story with a warning. BJ Locksmith, one of our members,
came into the office to tell me about a new scam that is affecting his business. If you are in need of a locksmith, be careful
if you are in the habit of using Google. There’s a bogus call center (might be located in St. Lucie County) that advertises in
a way that makes you think they are local. “Sebastian Locksmith”. They will quote you a price of $15 (too good to be true)
and then when they show up and fix the problem they up the ante significantly, and will not give you the keys until you
pay. The Sebastian detectives set up a sting, the locksmiths that showed up when they called the Sebastian Locksmith
number, were actually from Palm Bay. To add insult to injury, they used the Chamber address of 700 Main St. as their
business address. Unfortunately white collar crime does not get the attention for prosecution, and by locating beyond the
jurisdiction of local law enforcement, they fly under the radar. Just a reminder, know, like and trust whoever you do busi-
ness with! We have reputable locksmith chamber members for you to call!
Summer is our planning time, and we want you to save the date for our 22nd Annual Media Auction. September 25 is the
date, a fun Friday night! We have booked the Sebastian Working Waterfront location, catered by Crabby Bill’s Seafood
staff, we should have an awesome evening. The Media Auction is designed to provide our chamber members with adver-
tising offers and unique ways to promote your business, at very reduced rates. We always have a great time and the loca-
tion reminds me of all the Chamber events we used to hold at Hurricane Harbor! Hope you will plan on joining us!
Our lunch location has changed, so if you were planning on going to Disney, just head north to Capt. Hiram’s instead. Dis-
ney has booked a wedding the same day, and we were pleased that Capt. Hiram’s could accommodate us for an extra
lunch in the Tiffany Room. Marty Smithson, Administrator for the Sebastian Inlet District will speak to us about the all of
the work going on at the inlet. Our lunch sponsor is Panda Roof and so we will cover diverse subjects! Also on tap in Au-
gust is a business and pleasure hosted by Joanie at “Coastal Décor” in the Village Shoppes on US One. This business was
formally known as Design Transformations, it’s a beautiful shop filled with extraordinary home furnishings and décor.
Have a prosperous month and stay cool!

Trippin’ Series which featured the Sebastian River Area and Capt Hiram’s Resort, Sebastian Water-craft Rentals, Marsh Landing Restaurant, Skydive Sebastian and Mel Fisher’s Treasure Museum. The campaign included an “Enter to Win” prize draw-ing which resulted in nearly 600 entries (which we
can add to our database)! In case you missed it, you can watch the segments online at www.cbs12.com/roadtrippin and click on Sebas-tian.
In July, we ran a ½ page ad in Coastal Angler pro-moting our diverse fishing opportunities, targeting the Florida Region with a statewide circulation of 200,000 copies and 20 online editions.
Last February, we apply for a VISIT FLORIDA Adver-tising Matching Grant for the 2015-2016 fiscal year. We recently found out that we were award-ed $3,500. These funds will help our TDC dollars go even further! Stay tuned for information on 2015-2016 advertising and co-op opportunities.
The Florida Department of Agriculture & Fresh From Florida have put together postcards pro-moting all of the Working Waterfronts throughout Florida. We will compete head to head with major OTA’s on Tripadvisor, Kayak, Travelzoo, Travelocity, etc. (which attracts a qualified, targeted visitor and brings credibility to our site.
We can track revenue generated from bookings on our sites along with other detailed reports.
We will have access to data that will allow hotels to interact directly with the consumer to finalize bookings, negotiate rates and dates, as well as touch base with guest a few days prior to arrival to encourage them to book attractions.
We will be able to sell destination wide packages so attractions can participate as well (museums, boat tours, etc.) by offering unique deals that customers wouldn’t get elsewhere.
There are many other perks and we will have a meeting in September before we launch the pro-gram so our hoteliers and attractions can learn how to get the most out of this new tool!
Our 2016 Photo Contest is just around the corner and we are looking for a theme! Some of the ideas discussed at the meeting were “Local Treasures of Sebastian” and “Treasured Moments.” If you have an idea, please let us know.

Capt Hiram's is a fun, relaxed waterfront beach resort, with a riverfront restaurant, Bahamian-style SandBar, Boutique-style hotel, Boatique gift shop, and marina nes-tled on the Intracoastal Waterway.
The evolution of Capt Hiram's history as a waterfront resort is truly a unique story with solid roots in the area. The property was purchased by Tom Collins in 1986, who partnered with Martin Carter and Jimmy Hoffman to open, what was then known as Sebastian Inlet Marina. Since then it has grown from a small marina into the ar-ea's largest waterfront resort and restaurant. With the growth of the resort came the welcome addition of own-ers Liz and Mickey Capp in 2001. In late 2013 Capt Hiram's truly came full circle with the appointment of Will Collins, who was born the year the company was purchased, as President of Capt Hiram's.
Capt Hiram’s Resort is a unique option for Florida corpo-rate and group events as well as leisure travelers. It fea-tures a restaurant, hotel, live entertainment nightly, and more. There are a variety of packages to suit corporate and group events’ requirements. There are also inclu-sive packages for families, singles and couples. The hotel offers rooms with a variety of amenities including balco-nies or patios, a heated pool with tropical foliage, a coin laundry, and vending machines. Also available to guests of the hotel are complementary kayak, stand up paddle board and bicycle rentals. Construction has begun on 16 new state of the art units directly across from the River-front rooms with a planned opening in early 2016.
There is also plenty to fill your time with fishing, boat rentals, kayak, stand up paddleboard & bike rentals, and eco-cruises on the new River King, right on proper-ty. Capt Hiram's also features live entertainment seven nights a week, including the Capt Hiram's Concert Series where you can enjoy national recording acts in the inti-
mate setting of the SandBar.
Capt Hiram's was also thrilled to add to its family the Best Western just to our north on US 1. All this and so much more, in one location so just park you car and join the fun. Come to Capt Hiram's, where you can be lazy or crazy!
