MEMBER OF THE MONTH
GENE PROBASCO
I am the original owner of a 65 Fastback. I bought it while in the Navy, heading for
the Pacific Missle Range, Point Mugu, California. When I found out that I was getting shore duty off of the USS America CVA-66, I had several savings bonds that I sent home while I
was in the Navy, so when I did get shore duty I could by a car.
My first choice was an Austin Healy but with $1500 down, payments were $150 per
month, I couldn’t afford it. So I went to Reed Mullan Ford on 16th Street and Camelback and my payments for a Mustang would be $68.00 per month! The Mustang had 35 miles on
the odometer when purchase for a total price of $3500.00!
When I was discharged from the Navy, I met Donna and was married in Oxnard, CA
February 9th, 1969. Which we just had our 43rd Wedding Anniversary!
We moved back to Arizona in 1970 and then joined the Copperstate Mustang Club in 1980. I have a log book on everything that has been done since I’ve owned the car, from
oil changes to light bulb changes, and any work done on the Mustang, along with pictures of
all the restorations done as well. A guy came up to me and offered me $30,000.00 and said that I have had it long
enough and to let someone else enjoy it. I told him, “I’m still enjoying it, ha!” How many
people keep their cars for 43+ years. Besides my wife says if she sells it, it would be for at
least $100,000.00 and no less. Now days the old horse stays at home and is used for just short runs to the grocery
store or the doctor’s office. It has over 300,000 miles on her and she looks beautiful.

Spring Fling Show Update
Despite dire predictions of rain, the Copperstate Mustang Club’s Spring Fling
went forward. We had some cold winds but all in all it was a good day. There were 65 cars entered and 5 Display cars. The winner of the Berge
Choice award was Jim Boyd and he also won a first place in his class. We
had several Honorable mention winners as well as the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners. There were many nice door prizes for which several people did not
get their tickets for the drawing as they did not hear the announcement as to
where to place their tickets. We sold 78 hamburgers, 24 hotdogs and 10 chicken sandwiches as well
as chips, sodas and water.
The wind kept the weather from being too hot but also created some wind burns. We’ll hope for better weather for next year’s Spring Show.
As to that, if we are to have a Fall Show we need someone to step up to
be the chairperson and help with the planning.
I would like to express a special thank you to Greg Nelson for all the
pictures he took and for the CD’s of the pictures he created.
I also want to thank those who donated prizes for the show. Among
those were Berge Ford, M D Anderson Cancer Center, Phyllis Petrone,
Bob Bickel, Mitch Field, O’Reilly Auto Parts, The Mustang Shop, Gerald
Young, My Three Sons, Discount Tire, Cold Stone Creamery, Applebee’s,
California Mustang, Mustangs Plus and Scott Drake. These were all very
nice gifts and goodie bag items.
Thank you to all who participated in the show and I hope you enjoyed your
day.

Times “They are a Changin”
I recently read an article in the popular old people’s magazine “AARP” that the classic car rage that has been going on these last
10 -15 years is on the decline. In fact the article stated that our generation “35 – 65 years old”, (I’ve widened the perimeters for
personal reasons) will probably be the last generation to have the feelings that we all share for our cars.
They say in the article that the “Younger” generations of techies are far too wrapped up in personal computers, laptops and the internet to experience the feelings and pride that we have for our cars.
Younger people don’t run out on their 16th Birthday, as many of us have done, to take their driver’s test so that they can
drive for the first time. Many young people in the larger cities don’t go after their driver’s license until their later teens, or early 20’s.
Unfortunely, they’re to busy sitting in front of their computer screens, or TV sets playing video games, instead of being
outside and doing more physical things or experiencing “real” life vs “virtual” life. I believe, as part of the article mentioned, that our fixation with these “old cars” is the memories that we have, when
both us, and these cars were younger and newer.
I’ve had my share of cars over the years and many memories of the good times and bad times (I used to be a Chevy
guy) associated with these cars, and of the friends that I shared these memories with. I feel sad that the “Younger” generation may miss out on these wonderful times.
It is up to our generation to share these memories with the younger people and encourage them to join us in our adven-
tures and comradery with our classic cars. I’ve worked over the years with other members of Copperstate to open up member-ship to the newer Mustangs (we used to be a club of 1964 -1973 Mustangs only) that has been very successful. We now have
many newer, late model Mustangs in our club, and both older and younger members are sharing memories and ideas. Older
members are driving newer Mustangs as their daily drivers, and young members are looking for early Mustangs to work on and enjoy.
I’ve watched the interest in Model A’s and Model T’s and now, the early T-Birds dwindle down to a point that they are
no longer desired or valued as they once were. I think this is in part that the younger people can not relate to them or have
memories related to them. Part of the founding of Copperstate Mustang Club was the idea of preserving the idea and conception of the early Mustangs, Thank you to “Bill Hopkins” for starting the club and for the insight that this was a necessary and re-
warding endeavor. If it was not for people like Bill Hopkins, do you really think the new Mustangs that we enjoy today would
exist? Ford had turned the Mustang out to pasture and created a replacement “the Probe” to take its place. Do you know anyone that still drives a “Probe”? “Probe, doesn’t the name say it all!
Look around at all the “Retro” cars that Fords’ competition has created. The Camaro, , The Charger, The Challenger,
the VW Bug, they have all tried to create the excitement of yesterday’s cars and dreams, but not one of them stands up to the
Mustang’s popularity. Maybe we discovered something “special” when we were younger, something that keeps the spirit alive. Have you no-
ticed the cars, the clothes, the music, it keeps coming back into fashion. “Thank God” that most of us settled on the cars instead
of some of those other things that we went through, like Bell Bottom Pants, Hip Huggers, Disco, Big Hair and I could go on and on, but you know what I mean.
Keep the memories, good or bad; enjoy your cars for as long as you can. Like everything else in life someday it will
come to an end. I can’t imagine anyone trying to save the Corolla, or Honda Accord from the junkyard. We just had our Spring Car Show, smaller than usual, (7O cars), but I think that is because of the economy. Most events
attendance is lower than in times past as people have to choose which events they can afford to attend. We at Copperstate try to
“Give the Best Bang for the Buck” in providing entertainment, food and memories at a reasonable cost.
We need to support our Club, our Hobby, and preserve the Mustang and our memories for as long as we can, much will depend on the younger generation. Do we want to become a society of people who forget what its like to enjoy the excitement
of watching, or driving that “Sharp Car,” or listening to the sound of that dual exhaust, or that engine reviving to the redline on
the tach! How many times have you “drivin” your Mustang down the road, or pulled into that parking lot and someone said
NICE CAR. Don’t forget it and help someone else get that same enjoyment. Support your club, support your hobby and sup-
port your country.
Always,
Dan M

Scholarship Info
The scholarship committee of the Copperstate Mustang Club, consisting of members Bill Hop-
kins, Tom Martin and Dan Martorano, met to review applications for the “Max Salisbury” schol-
arship award. The scholarship is given annually to a student attending the Ford Asset Program at
Glendale Community College.
This year Copperstate awarded two $500.00 dollar scholarships to students of this pro-
gram. The winners of the scholarship this year were: Cody Lapedus and Brad Skinner. These
young men met the criteria outlined by both Glendale Community College and Copperstate. The
scholarships were presented on April 24, 2012, at the annual Glendale Community College schol-
arship luncheon, which was M.C.’d by local news anchor Kent Dana.
This year was the largest scholarship event put on by Glendale Community College. Our
thanks go out to program instructor Don Davis, who provides us with the applicant’s information
and co-ordinates the training of the Ford Asset students. Best wishes to these young men in their
future endeavors.

CARS FOR SALE
1965 Mustang Coupe
1965 Mustang, bought in California in 1994 and had it restored: 302, V-8, Cobalt Blue with Parchment interior, automat-ic, redwood/Grant steering wheel, slightly lowered to level (also air shocks in back), restored by professionals, chrome under the hood, re-chromed bumpers, female owned, garaged. Please call Denise 719-495-1051 or email [email protected] for more information and price.
1965 200 Cu Inch Engine and Transmission
Modified 200 inline 6 cylinder engine and C4 transmission for $3500; complete motor and tranny; drop it in and go; 65 block, bored 40 over, stock crank with mild cam; Australian OZ-250 head built by Basko Engine Shop; DUI ignition; ce-ramic headers; motor has approx 1500 miles on it and tranny has not been used since built; I've got over $5000 into this setup but you get everything you need to drop into your vehicle that needs a drivetrain (except for the driveshaft). I'm firm on my price, but will consider trade. I'm looking for a decent Jeep Cherokee but also want an old (50's) Ford pickup truck or a side by side (Rhino).
