NEW COLUMN!Deborah's Profile Pointers: Tip #1

"I can't believe they set me up with that person!""I never get set up with anyone I like.""Didn't they read my profile?"Have you ever felt this way? Have you ever foundyourself saying something like this?Are you frustrated with online dating?Me too. If you're reading this, chances are that you'reinterested in this dating system. Chances are, ifyou're still a part of this system, what you'vebeen trying so far hasn't worked as well as you'dlike it to work for you. Now, you could take a break from letting highlytrained people look for you, and build a searchingalgorithm to scour the internet for compatiblematches. But me, I'm not so good at writing code.Maybe you are.

Instead of writing an algorithm, I found it a loteasier to change the way I write, and the way Icome across online. Writing an online profile isn'tsomething that's taught in most schools.That's why it's so hard to write a dating profile.

That's why I'm here. This column deals with putting together an onlinedating profile in a way that will both show thefantastic person we know you are in the bestway, and will attract the kind of person you'reinterested in finding. Are you interested in meeting someone that youcould be interested in? Do you want to increaseyour chances of getting set up with the rightperson? I'm not saying that my techniques will definitely,absolutely, positively make sure that you meetyour intended. I can't control or predict thefuture. But I can definitely, absolutely, positively, giveyou some hints, tips, and secrets that will help tipthe odds in your favor. Tip #1: Proofread your profile as carefully asyou'd proofread the cover letter you'd send outfor your dream job.Why? In this case, your profile is your cover letter toapply for your first interview, er, date. Are youmore interested in your dream job than yourdreamy beloved? Why did I start off with something so obvious?It isn't obvious. Your profile might have perfectspelling and grammar. But how does it soundwhen you read it out loud?What? Reading it out loud?Absolutely. Your ears hear errors that your eyesmiss. And you'll get a sense for the "tone" of yourwriting. This will help you "hear" if you sound like anessay. Or hear if you just don't sound like you.In the next few columns, I'll go more into thefiner points of online dating profiles. Is there anything you'd really like to know aboutthis? Would you like me to review your profileand work with you to help edit it?I'd love to hear from you. Please write to meat [email protected].
