I grew up in Philadelphia. My neighborhood, D and the Boulevard, was home to a traditional conservative synagogue, B’rith Israel, where my family belonged. And even though it is no longer a synagogue, to this day when I drive down the Boulevard and I see the building, I pine for those days. I don’t think it’s just hollow nostalgia. I can still hear the voice of the cantor, the sound of the shofar; I can remember the faces of my friends who would stand on the front steps of the synagogue, people wishing each other “Gut Yontif.” Many of you, I imagine, understand my feelings and have your own warm memories of the synagogue you grew up in. While Melrose can’t recapture your synagogue of yesterday, we remain committed to tradition and rituals that for centuries have provided meaning to the Jewish people. Melrose understands simply because something was “yesterday” doesn’t mean it is irrelevant. We are dedicated to maintaining as much as possible this celebrated and sacred past, while at the same time engaging the present. While acknowledging our beautiful past and present, we also look to the future. I am so excited to be with my colleague, Cantor Stephen Freedman, for the Holy Days, Festivals and selected Shabbatot. I am always thrilled to meet new people coming to Melrose. I am so proud and honored to be the rabbi of Melrose and especially proud when people tell me how welcoming our community is and how friendly and warm. And that warmth has made new people want to return time and time again. My prayer for you and for me this year is a wish that there be much in all of us: the grace, the elegance of mind, the loveliness of spirit, the rich capacity for love and friendship; the heightened sense of empathy and the eagerness to celebrate. WHY MELROSE WORKS by Rabbi Charles S. Sherman

Melrose B’nai Israel Emanu-El

Over the last few years Melrose B’nai Israel Emanu-El has experienced significant growth. I know there are lots of reasons – our move to the Old York Road corridor, an inviting space, the demographics of the community, and a growing number

of people searching for a place to call “home.”

Digging deeper I think something else is happening here. In my opinion, part of the reason for our growth is that we are providing an authentic response to many people who are uprooted spiritually. There is a certain comfort level in allowing the past – the liturgy, words, melodies, rituals and ceremonies – to inform the present and the future.

The sameness brings a level of comfort to many of us. There is a peace that comes with the continuity – knowing that the prayers we say, the words we recite, the songs we sing, are the same or very similar to what our parents, grandparents, great-grandparents uttered.

I can still hear the voice of the cantor, the sound of the shofar; I can remember the faces of my friends who would stand on the front steps of the synagogue, people wishing each other “Gut Yontif.”

Many of you, I imagine, understand my feelings and have your own warm memories of the synagogue you grew up in. While Melrose can’t recapture your synagogue of yesterday, we remain committed to

tradition and rituals that for centuries have provided meaning to the Jewish people.

President’s Report What an exciting time to start my term as President of

our congregation! There is much to share as we look ahead.

We are delighted to welcome our new members – 60 as of this writing and counting! Many already participate in services and have attended our summer events. Their energy and enthusiasm are contagious. It has been a pleasure getting to know each of them. They bring to us a new perspective and fresh ideas. We look forward to learning from and growing with them as we move forward.

Our “little shul with the big heart” has introduced Cantor Stephen Freedman to our community with two very special events following the jubilant Kabbalat Shabbat/Ma’ariv services he conducted with Rabbi Sherman. We filled the house each time! The celebration continued at both a Friday Night Light dinner in July and lavish dessert reception in August where we had the opportunity to individually welcome to our MBIEE family the Cantor and his lovely wife, Randy.

How fortunate we are to have him for Selichot, the High Holidays and select Shabbatot and festivals throughout the year. He radiates warmth and the joy of Judaism as he leads us so beautifully in prayer. We are especially excited about the dynamic collaboration between Rabbi Sherman and Cantor Freedman. The High Holiday services promise to be both enlightening and uplifting.

To start off the New Year, on Tuesday, September 24 at 7:30 pm, MBIEE is proud to host comedy sensation, Avi Liberman. A documentary about his charitable endeavors in Israel, “The Land of Milk and Funny,” is being screened in Philadelphia the Sunday before his appearance. In addition to performing in clubs around the United States and on TV, Avi designed his comedy tours to serve as fundraisers for Israel, most notably in support of the Koby Mandell Foundation. He has created emissaries for Israel by introducing Black and Latino comedians throughout the country. Please plan to join us and invite your family and friends. Be prepared for a wildly entertaining evening! This program is generously supported by the Lewis Lisman Distinguished Speakers Series.

For Selichot this year, we are presenting a most inspirational and provocative program: Dylan and Rader, A Boy and His Dog. Jaime Rosenman Gordon will speak about her young son Dylan, whose autism rendered him nearly noncommunicative. His life changed profoundly by interaction with Rader, his service dog. As each of us individually ponders the meaning of the New Year, this family’s story of hope under trying circumstances is both heartening and empowering.

That evening as well, we present the LES Award to Allen and Linda Herman and Alan Berson, three

congregants who tirelessly give of themselves to our synagogue family. With this honor, we recognize their unconditional service and commitment. Allen and Linda utilize their professional resources as publishers to design the posters, flyers and slides that promote our events so very well. Alan Berson spearheaded our enviable adult education program for many years and now has graciously taken over Len Cohen’s position as Minyan Chair, assuring that Morning Minyan continues as it always has at MBIEE.

In celebration of Jewish Book Month, on Monday evening, November 11, we are proud to present acclaimed American-Israeli Modern Orthodox author, Naomi Ragen. Among numerous others, her novels include, Jephte’s Daughter, The Sisters Weiss, and Sotah. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear her speak about her latest book, An Unorthodox Match (available for sale that evening). A recurring theme in her fiction is injustice against women in the Haredi community. Mark your calendar! This is her exclusive appearance in the Philadelphia area as she tours the East Coast. Details are forthcoming!

I am grateful to a dedicated Executive Committee: Immediate Past President, Ron Goldman; Vice Presidents, David Berd, Rebecca Gellman, Sharon Sussman; Treasurer/Acting Financial Secretary, Jay Rigberg; Secretary, Gene Rifkind; Presidents of Sisterhood and Men’s Club, Helene Katz, Margo Kuno, Ben Burrows, Mitchell Pinsly. We met through the summer and are tackling serious issues concerning security and financial sustainability in addition to discussing programs, classes and special events we are proud to offer. What we discuss and the conclusions reached are then brought before the Board of Directors who thoughtfully review each issue. Under the guidance of Mitchell Pinsly, we have been working on a security protocol to be put in place before the High Holidays. A congregational meeting will take place to inform our community of the plan. For everyone’s comfort and convenience, we offer this year valet parking. If interested, please call the office for details.

Indeed, these are exciting times at MBIEE! I am honored to be your President. It has only been two months. Yet look at all that is happening! But stayed tuned. We’ve only just begun!

On behalf of the Executive Committee and Board of Directors, I wish you a year of fulfillment, meaning, peace and happiness.

Bob joins me in wishing you and your family Shanah Tovah U’Metukah!

Shalom, Fran

*Blessing of the Newborns

Rosh Hashana celebrates creation. What better time is there than the beginning of the Jewish New Year to affirm the ongoing circle of life through our children. We continue our wonderful "Ceremony of Blessing" for children, grandchildren, great-grand-grandchildren born since last Rosh Hashanah. This heart-warming, inspiring ceremony takes place in our sanctuary during the Musaf service on the first day of Rosh Hashanah, September 30, 11:30am.

New parents, grandparents, great-grandparents will rise to recite the traditional Shehecheyanu prayer-so blessed in having reached this very special day. We will be presenting a MBIEE baby t-shirt and a specially imprinted Sh’ma Yisrael pillow case. Baby and parents need not be present to participate. Call the MBIEE office at 215-635-1505 or email [email protected] with the name of your new addition and birth date.

High Holidays - More

Selichot: A Boy and His Dog and LES Awards

MBIEE will observe the tradition of Selichot, our communal prayers for God’s forgiveness, on Saturday night, September 21. The evening is enriched by our traditional presentation of the LES awards and by a fascinating and inspirational program presented by Rabbi Sherman and guest speaker, Jaime Rosenman Gordon.

The presentation is entitled, “Dylan and Rader, A Boy and His Dog.” Ms. Rosenman tells the story of her autistic son, Dylan, age 9, whose life was changed by a support dog.

It is a soaring, inspiring lesson of hope, unconditional love, and an unending search for joy

The LES award, named for our honored congregants Len Cohen, Edythe Kaplan and Shirley Cohen, recognizes unconditional service and commitment to and for the MBIEE family. This year the

award goes to three honorees:

Alan Berson, Allen Herman, and Linda Herman

Alan Berson is a long time participant in the MBIEE daily minyan and frequently serves as prayer leader. With the passing of our cherished minyan organizer, Len Cohen, Alan agreed to assume the arduous responsibility of ensuring that

we have 10 people in attendance every morning. Alan was chair of our highly recognized Adult Education Committee. He was both creative and persistent in recruiting outstanding speakers who entertained us and challenge our intellects.

Alan and Linda Herman are our “go to” people when we need to promote MBIEE to the community. They graciously loan us the talents that bring to their professional lives - successful publishers of several community newspapers. They prepare beautifully designed, eye-catching posters that are important in publicizing our plethora of programs, many of which are open to residents of the Old York Road corridor. You will see their handiwork hanging on easels in our lobby, on our web site, in the Shofar, and in The Jewish Exponent.

Tashlich

According to Jewish tradition, on Rosh Hashana we gather as a community at a stream, brook, or creek and reach into our pockets, remove crumbs, and symbolically "toss our sins away." Our Tashlich service will be held late afternoon of the first day of Rosh Hashana at Wall Park, Church and Meetinghouse Rds. Join our MBIEE community to recite the words and sing the songs of this unique service. After Tashlich, we return to MBIEE in enough time to relax and then begin our Mincha/Maariv service. The weather in the recent past has been unusually lovely; bring the kids, the grandchildren. What a great way to spend part of the Rosh Hashana Holyday together, outdoors, in a beautiful park setting.

Martyrology

Our Yom Kippur Martyrology program features Rabbi Seth Frisch, who will share his first-hand experience of the 1983 rescue of Ethiopian Jews, which came to be known as Operation Moses. The rescue mission, coordinated by the Mossad, inspired the spy thriller movie, The Red Sea Diving

Resort, released this year.

Seth Frisch was a young rabbinical student studying at the Jewish Theological Seminary and serving as a legislative aide to the chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations when he was asked to assist in the rescue operation. Within days of being

pressed into service, Rabbi Frisch found himself crossing dangerous international borders and secretly making contact with the Ethiopian Jewish community stranded in southern Sudan. He participated in 27 missions to Sudan and Ethiopia in carrying out the successful effort to bring the Ethiopian Jews safely to their new home in the State of Israel.

Rabbi Frisch was ordained at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. He studied the Art of Biblical Narrative as a graduate student at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem under the mentorship of Dr. Shalom Paul, Chairperson of the Dead Sea Scrolls Foundation. He is rabbi and teacher at the New Shul Learning Community of Philadelphia.

Rabbi Frisch and his wife, Rabbi Robyn Frisch, co-founded The Lerhaus Institute of Jewish Studies in Abington. It has become known for its high level of biblical and narrative studies. The Institute was modeled on the Lehrhaus Institute created by Franz Rosenzweig and Martin Buber in 1920’s Germany.

Wine and Sukkot

Bottles - High Holidays and Beyond

This year we have a new list of kosher wines for sale and a new way of purchasing them.

Any of the wines listed below can be ordered and purchased from the Men’s Club. Anyone can fill out an order form, available on the table in the lobby. The orders will be filled and ready for pickup any morning after Minyan and on most other days, except Shabbat and Yom Tov. You can visit the wine shop (in the cloak room) after weekday Minyans or by making an appointment with our sommeliers, Mitchell Pinsly ([email protected]) and Andy Black ([email protected]).

Now, for the first time, new and exciting wines also can be purchased on-line by going directly to kosherwinemarketplace.com. On the site, select MBIEE as your synagogue and begin the ordering process. At the end you will need to set up a log-in name and password to complete your order. You can order one bottle, a full case, or a mixed case. Your wine will be delivered to MBIEE, and arrangement will be made for you to pick up and pay for it at a convenient time.

We hope that you will be pleased with these new choices of kosher wine and the new internet purchase option. Any oenological questions can be directed to Mitchell or Andy by email or by leaving a message in our office.

Sukkot Congregational Dinner

We are pleased to announce that this Sukkot, Friday evening October 18 at 5:45 pm, MBIEE is beginning a wonderful new tradition. We will honor our immediate past president at a dinner following services. It is an opportunity to say thank you and to acknowledge and recognize the enormous time and effort our presidents give to our MBIEE community.

This year we honor Ronald Goldman, who served as MBIEE president 2017-2019. Ron served with enthusiasm, integrity and wisdom, leading the synagogue through challenging transitions and a period of steady growth. We all appreciate Ron’s vision and perspective.

Ron grew up in West Philadelphia where his family belonged to B’nai Aaron Synagogue. He graduated from pharmacy school in 1955 and worked as a pharmacist until his retirement in 2010. For 36 years he owned the Castor Avenue Pharmacy. While Ron and his family were members of Shaare Shamayaim in the mid 1970s, his wife Libby took a job as secretary of

MBIEE, where they felt a sense of belonging and made good friendships. The Goldmans became members of MBIEE 12 years ago.

“I enjoyed the challenge of trying to make things improve, and to increase the membership,” Ron says of his tenure as president. “Melrose has become a known entity.” Characteristically modest, Ron is quick to point out the people he worked with on the board, and their contributions. Many will continue on under our new president, Fran Sion.

Ron and Libby truly live the message of what Melrose is all about. It embodies an affirmation of each person. It is about the importance of relationships, about goodness and about listening. It is about faith. It is about determination, and doing the best we can.

Happily, and true to form, Ron’s involvement has not lessened now that he is no longer president. He remains on our Board and Executive Committee as Immediate Past President. Of course, you will see him at Saturday and Festival services, and all synagogue events and activities. It is a lifestyle for him.

Ron and Libby have three children: Penny (Dr. Steven) Goldstein of Orlando, Marci (Steven) Laderman of Holland, PA, and Rabbi Alan (Missy) Goldman of Israel. They also have six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Please join us for a lovely Sukkot/Shabbat catered dinner honoring Ron. The cost is $18 per person. Reservations can be made by calling the synagogue office.

Adult Education

An Evening With Naomi Ragen To mark Jewish Book month, MBIEE will welcome

celebrated author Naomi Ragen for a talk about her latest book, An Unorthodox Match: A Novel on November 11, 7pm. An engaging speaker, Ragen was recently voted one of the three most popular authors in Israel. An Unorthodox Match is Ragen’s eleventh book. Her play “Women’s Minyan” ran for six years in Habima (Israel’s National Theater) and has also been staged in The United States, Canada, and Argentina.

Ragen was born in New York City. Her father was a first generation American, whose family had come from Ukraine. After his untimely death, young Naomi changed schools and attended an Orthodox private school. She reflects on the impact that change, and her early education, had on her life

in her autobiography:

“They taught us Bible, Prophets, Jewish law, the daily prayers. We would begin each day praying together. We would sing grace after meals each lunch time. The songs, the music, the preparation for the holidays began to enchant me. It was exotic and joyful, and the housing projects where I lived were so deadening to the imagination – those endless red bricks! … I was in high school, however, when the serious

change took place. My best friend was the daughter of a rabbi. They were Haredi, deeply religious. She was a wonderful, brilliant girl who drew me closer into her world, and I began to see the value and the beauty of it.”

Ragen went on to study at Brooklyn College. She moved to Jerusalem in 1971 and earned her master’s degree in English from Hebrew University.

At MBIEE Ragen will discuss her life as a writer and her newest novel, which will be released by St. Martin’s Press September 24. The following is a description from the publisher:

California girl Lola has her life all set up: business degree, handsome fiancé, fast track career, when suddenly, without warning, everything tragically implodes. After years fruitlessly searching for love, marriage, and children, she decides to take the radical step of seeking spirituality and meaning far outside the parameters of modern life in the insular, ultraorthodox enclave of Boro Park, Brooklyn. There, she comes upon the dysfunctional home of newly-widowed Jacob, a devout Torah scholar, whose life is also in turmoil, and whose small children are aching for the kindness of a womanly touch. It is the shocking and unexpected messages of her new community which will finally force her into a deeper understanding of the real choices she now faces and which will ultimately decide her fate.

Tickets for the program are $18 or $36 for the program

plus a copy of the book. Books may be pre-ordered by calling the synagogue office and picked up beginning September 23 or the night of the program. There will be a limited supply for purchase that evening. Please join us for what promises to be an engaging and enlightening event..

Avi Lieberman to Perform at MBIEE On September 24 at 7:30 p.m. MBIEE is proud to

welcome the funny, inspirational and poignant comedian, Avi Liberman. Avi’s unique style has been seen in comedy clubs coast-to-coast and on TV. His performance is not to be missed. A documentary, "The Land of Milk and Funny" about the comedy caravan that he brings to Israel on behalf of the Koby Mandel foundation, will be screened in Philadelphia on September 22.

This is a great way for our community to start off the New Year. Tickets: $18 per person in advance, $22 at the door. We expect this performance to be a sellout, so reserve now. A reception with light refreshments will follow the show. This program is made possible through the sponsorship of the Lewis Lisman Distinguished Lecture series. A sample of Avi’s humor can be found at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5OcikensVUg.

Avi’s comedy supports the Koby Mandel foundation through his Comedy for Koby’s programs. Rabbi Seth and

Sherri Mandell established the Koby Mandell Foundation in 2001 after their 13 year old son Koby Mandell and his friend Yosef Ishran were brutally murdered by terrorists near their home in Israel. Their personal loss led the Mandells to envision a system of support programs that they hoped would make a real difference in the lives of people who had lost parents, children or

siblings through terrorism, war, or other tragedies.

MBIEE Talmud Class Dr. Saundra Sterling Epstein will again conduct a

Talmud class in the new year. The introductory class will focus on discussions and study from Masechet Kiddushin, chapter 1. It will consider teachings about women, property law, and the spiritual aspect of being part of a community with so many dictated practices and laws. Classes, which begin at 7pm, are scheduled for the following dates

Wednesday, October 23 Wednesday, October 30 Tuesday, November 5 Wednesday, November 13 Tuesday, November 19 To register, please call the office or fill out one of the

forms to be found on the lobby table. The classes are free of charge, although a donation to MBIEE in honor of Dr. Epstein is encouraged to support the program.

Men’s Club Report We mourn the loss of Len Cohen, our

former president and spiritual leader, and we thank Alan Berson for assuming responsibility for our daily Minyan, which Len maintained for decades.

Men’s Club is responsible for the sale of kosher wine to our congregants, another task performed for years by the Great Cohen. Fortunately, Andy Black has graciously agreed to take over the wine shop; see the new wine list on page 7.

Once again we will fulfill our responsibility to erect the MBIEE Sukkah. We hope to have construction completed by Sunday, September 22 and need able-bodied men to help. Interested? Call the office or email us.

Inclusion We want to make you aware of the

special accommodations that are provided during High Holiday services:

• Assistive Listening Devices for individuals with hearing disability will be available at all services. They will be in a bin on a table just outside the inner doors. If you need assistance, please see an usher. Each device is programmed for our sound system only. Please remember to turn off and return when leaving.

• We provide visual enhancement devices for magnifying print. We have 3 sizes and a selection of readers at different strengths. Please check what is available on the table outside of the sanctuary and return at the conclusion of the service.

• Our custom designed accessible Torah

Reading Table is on the sanctuary floor enabling full participation in the Torah service.

• Congregants and guests who use wheelchairs can request that their assigned seat be removed so that the wheelchair can replace it. Please make these arrangements in advance by calling the office.

• If you become ill during services, notify an usher. Although we may have medical personnel available to assist you, please note that it is our policy to call 911 in the case of a medical emergency.

• Additional accessible parking spaces are available across from our front entrance. This year we are offering valet parking for a nominal fee. This service must be arranged in advance by calling the office.

On Thursday, September 26 we will put on a Rosh Hashanah program for the residents of Artis Senior Living, a facility for those with memory impairment. If you would like to join our volunteers, please call the office. Shanah Tovah, Jean Lisman and Honey Zazoff Inclusion Committee Co-Chairs

High Holiday Food Drive There are people living among us who

have difficulty providing for their nutritional needs. It is our duty, our mitzvah, to do what we can to help.

We collect non-perishable foods in the wooden donation box in the shul lobby. We deliver those gifts to the pantry at Beth Sholom, to which many clients come each week. Give as much as you can!

During the penitential season, in partnership with Federation, we make a special effort to provide for holiday needs. Please place your donation in the bags available in the Shul and drop them into the bin outside the sanctuary any time between September 1 and October 22.

Lastly, if you know of anyone who needs help - because of high food bills, inability to get to a store, or other reason - kindly refer that person to our shul office or to the Mitzvah Food Pantry directly.

No one should be hungry in this rich country. Carol Weinbaum, Social Action Co-Chair

In Memoriam: Leonard Cohen

After my mother’s death, George and I volunteered to attend MBIEE weekday morning minyan. Len was in charge, welcomed us, made our presence seem important. Despite rarely making notes, and never using a computer, he kept track flawlessly and modestly managed minyanim. He was a good man. Carol Weinbaum

Len was a kind, caring, and generous man who loved his synagogue. He will be greatly missed. Bill and Miriam Shnycer

Len Cohen's modesty was his most brilliant characteristic of leadership. Len always led by asking us to join with him, never by demanding that we work under him. Ariana and Ben Burrows

My father was truly one-of-a-kind. I am so grateful to have had him in my life for so many years. And will always remember the wonderful Father’s Day weekend we had this year on the Cape with his great grandson, Quintin – truly very special. Alan Cohen

Len Cohen was kind, generous, fun-loving, and a gentleman to the end of his life. One small deed I noticed was that he supplied a container for any sale of wine, whether box or bag. I will miss him. Amy Seidman

My brother, Len, was the smartest and kindest man I ever knew. He was always available to answer my questions and give me advice. He would talk about politics and sports. Next to his wonderful family Melrose was his second home. It was a labor of love for him to be in charge of so many activities at Melrose, especially the morning Minyan. In the last few years, Len has been coming to my house for lunch every week, and on other days, we went out for lunch at Ben and Irv's or to the movies. I miss him very much. Miriam Necowitz

Len liked to tell the story of how he was confused with the well-known singer-songwriter. He would be asked, “Are you the real Leonard Cohen?” Those of us who loved him know the answer: He was the real deal. David Berd

Len was the personification of a Mensch. He always had a smile and a good word for everyone. I would often listen to him getting his point across at meetings. He never said more then was necessary to convey his thoughts and point of view. He kept his cool and patiently listened to others point of view. I hope to be like him when I grow up! Jay Rigberg

In life he was a blessing to all who knew him. May his memory be for a blessing. Charlotte Shanblatt

We got to know Len late in his life when we first became associated with MBIEE. It became evident almost immediately that he was one of the pillars of the congregation and a gute neshome (good soul). His death is a serious loss to the congregation and to us personally. Rabbi Robert and Ruth Layman

Rarely, if ever, did he utter a complaint, either about other people or the various roles he performed with grace and pleasure at MBIEE. If I had to use one word to describe Len, it would be MENTOR in English or MENSCH in Yiddish. Len always spoke the King's English, never raised his voice, and always had an infectious smile; his demeanor rarely changed, not even during the few moments when he

was displeased about something. Mitchell Pinsly

Len was a warm, deep hearted man to whom you couldn't say no to any request he made. Len was a gentle man. We will miss him. Dr. Burton and Janet Eisenberg

What a gem. Always positive. Always charming. Always ready to help. Always a gentleman. Sharon Sussman

Len was a true mensch. To us he was a friend and counselor who always was there when needed and never said “no” to any need for the Shul. He will be remembered dearly and sorely missed. Libby and Ron Goldman

Our beloved congregant and friend, Leonard Cohen (Levy Yitzhak Ben Yehiel Mechiel), died July 7, 2019 (4 Tammuz 5779) at the age of 96.

Below are some remembrances of Len by his family, friends, and fellow congregants.

Honor and Remember: It is fitting that a member of the family be present at the minyan on the day of the yahrzeit. Anyone observing a yahrzeit is entitled to an aliyah, which is arranged by contacting Warren Nachmann through the MBIEE office. Also, the name of the remembered is announced from the pulpit on the Shabbat morning preceding the week of the yahrzeit. The memory of your loved one can be honored by making a contribution to the MBIEE Yahrzeit Fund, sponsoring a Shabbat Kiddush, or purchasing a Memorial Plaque.

Memorial Plaques Memorialize your loved ones by purchasing a memorial plaque that will be displayed on the walls of the MBIEE sanctuary in perpetuity. A plaque guarantees that Kaddish will be recited on each yahrzeit. For details, call Gunther Kirchheimer through the MBIEE office.

Our sincere condolences to:

• The Feldman Family on the passing of Ron Feldman - Beloved husband of Jill Feldman, father of Rachel, Debra and Amy

• Jonathan Tobin on the loss of his sister, Diane Tobin Druckman, in Seattle. She leaves behind her husband of 50 years, Joel C. Druckman, daughters Amanda Stoffer and Candice Betz and a son Douglas Druckman as well as a sister Janice Tobin Goldman, brother Jonathan Tobin and a niece Moriah Tobin as well as eight grandchildren.

• Harry Slyinder on the loss of his wife, Phyllis, a long time former member

• The Lipton Family on the loss of Stanley Lipton, father of our Minyanaire of the Year, Bruce (Meryl Sussman) Lipton and grandfather of Avi and Rachel Lipton.

• The Cohen family on the passing of Len Cohen. Len was a giant in our Melrose community. His activities touched so many in our organization. Among his many past positions he was a Past President (1990-92), treasurer, financial secretary, editor of the Shofar, Director of the wine Room, and a Men’s Club President (2000-2007). In addition, he ran the 200 club and Hanukah Raffles, and was the heart and soul of the Minyan, making sure we had 10 people every morning. Len grew up working in his family’s delicatessen on Marshall Street in Jewish North Philadelphia. He attended Central Hight School (class 175) and graduated from University of Pennsylvania (1944) with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. Len was an aficionado of sports and an avid fan of the 76ers and Eagles. See page 13 for remembrances of Len.
