Nutrition Health Related Facts

• Include Foods that are made from wheat, rice, oats, cornmeal, barley or any other cereal grain

• Divided into two subgroups:• refined grains

• Milled- a process that removes the bran and germ

Examples:• White flour• Germed cornmeal• White bread• White rice

• whole grainsExamples:• Whole wheat flour• Bulgur (cracked wheat)• Oatmeal• whole cornmeal• brown rice

• 6-11 servings each day• Your body takes the

carbohydrates it needs from grains and uses it for energy.

• They keep your blood sugar and insulin levels from rising and dropping to fast.

• A diet high in grains help prevent heart disease.

Milk & Dairy

2-3 servings each day

Increases the likelihood of optimal bone density for both men and women

Helps protect against osteoporosis and bone fractures

Contain major source of Vitamin A, Vitamin D and Calcium.

 Vitamin A : builds eyes, skin tone and hair.

Vitamin D : helps absorption of Calcium

Calcium : builds healthy bones, teeth, muscles and nervous system.

Meats & Poultry

increased risk of cancer- Maintains immune system and hormonal balance- Proteins help growth and development of the body.

Fats and Oils.Need to get at least 15% to 30% calories in diet 

Consuming some fats isn’t bad because your body needs it.

Has no recommended serving ranges

Saturated fats, trans fats, raise cholesterol levels in the blood. . . High risk of heart disease.

monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats are essential fats a.k.a. the good fat.
